#135 Eastern Michigan Eagles

2003-04: 13-15, 7-11, 9th

MAC

By Joel Welser

It has been a long time since there has been any excitement in Ypsilanti.  Over his four seasons as head coach, Jim Boone has done a great job rebuilding a program that has never had much to be thrilled about.  The Eagles went 7-11 in MAC play last year and are slowly working their way up to become a presence in the conference.

Who’s Out: Starter Boo Jackson has run out of eligibility and JaQuan Hart has opted to try his luck in the NBA…or the CBA as it may be.  Ricky Cottrill, who saw some quality minutes off the bench last year, is also graduating.

Who’s In: This recruiting class may end up being one of the best Eastern has seen in a long while.  The Denby High School backcourt is moving 40 miles down the street to Ypsilanti.  Point guard Rico Harris and shooting guard Darryl Garret should make big contributions early and often for the Eagles.  Small Forwards Craig Cashen and Nick Freer round out the 2004-05 class.

Who to Watch: Somebody needs to step up and be the ball handler and assist man for the Eagles.  That job could very well fall to Michael Ross.  The senior hasn’t been a big time scoring threat, but there are enough of those on the roster.  Somebody just needs to get them the ball.  Ross led the squad with just 2.9 assists per game last year.  For his senior campaign he’ll be asked to provide more of a point guard leadership role for the young team.

Projected Conference Rank: The expectations are never too high for EMU.  The middle of the pack would be a great place for the Eagles to end up as they continue to rebuild.  Anything higher then 7th in the MAC might be asking a little too much.

Projected Post-season Tournament: none
