#136 College of Charleston Cougars

2003-04: 20-9, 11-5, 3rd

Southern

By Joel Welser

Despite the large turnaround of players in Charleston, things don’t look too bad.  A solid core of experienced players return and a well balanced group of newcomers should add depth to the depleted bench.  It might take a little while for things to start to gel with all the new faces, but come January these guys will be ready to compete for the Southern Conference title.

Who’s Out: Of the ten players that saw minutes in nearly every game last year, five are gone.  Mike Benton, Quinton Hollis, Joe Weurding, Thomas Mobley and Marcus Johnson make up that list.  Bench player Bernie Coaxum has also used up his eligibility.  Jabyron Wilson, who redshirted last year, has been dismissed from the program.

Who’s In: The good news is that Tom Herrion has brought a good class of new players to Charleston.  Drew Hall is transferring in from Georgetown and a large list of incoming freshman will be asked to make an immediate impact.  Guards Marcus Hammond and Tavon Nelson, forwards Jermaine Johnson and James Hairston, and centers Ben Brown and Josh Jackson should all compete for the chance to see significant minutes.

Who to Watch: Tony Mitchell has inherited the leadership role for the Cougars.  The 5-11 point guard average nearly 13 points and four assists per game during his junior season.  He’ll have to be the team leader and find another scoring threat if Charleston wants to repeat their success of last year.

Projected Conference Rank: As usual, things should be tight atop the Southern standings.  They’ll have a solid year but come up just short of the top spot and finish in 2nd.

Projected Post-season Tournament: none
