#142 Western Kentucky
2003-04: 15-13, 8-6
Sun Belt
By
Joel Welser
Even with so many players leaving,
Western Kentucky has proven time and again that they can compete. An
improvement on their 8-6 conference record is very feasible and if head
coach Darrin Horn can find a new scorer or two than the Hilltoppers could
reclaim their spot on top of the Sun Belt.
Who’s Out: Three key
Hilltopper players are graduating and three more are transferring. Starters
Nigel Dixon, Mike Wells and Todor Pandov all leave following their senior
seasons and Ryan Lambert, Nick Hill and Kevin Massiah have all decided to
transfer.
Who’s In: Transfer Elgrace
Wilborn from Tennessee will have to step in immediately to help fill the
depleted roster of the Hilltoppers. Shooting guard Courtney Lee highlights
a class that will be asked to play a lot of minutes and compete for starting
jobs. The rest of the incoming freshman are Michael Walker, Boris Siakam
and Ty Rogers.
Who to Watch: Point guard
Antonio Haynes averaged nearly 12 points per game last year. While he can
be a prolific scorer, netting over 20 points on three occasions last season,
it is his role as the point guard that will be more important for Haynes and
the Hilltoppers. If Haynes can keep the turnovers down and find the open
man for easy buckets, than things could be looking up again in Bowling
Green.
Projected Conference Rank:
The competition in the Sun Belt doesn’t make things any easier for Western
Kentucky. A 3rd place finish is realistic in a tough conference.
Projected Post-season
Tournament: none
