#144 High Point Panthers
Big South
By
Joel Welser
Returning
all their key players and bringing in a great recruiting class should help
the Panthers improve on their 10-6 conference record of a year ago. High
Point’s fast-paced style should give opponents even more trouble this year
with more athletes on the floor.
Who’s Out: The panthers
return all five starters and only lose role players Brent Halsch and John
Stonehocker.
Who’s In: Any mid major
program in the nation would be ecstatic with the recruiting class head coach
Bart Lundy has brought to North Carolina. Two All-American junior college
players head the list in Akeem Scott and Louisana Juco player of the year,
Titus Byrd. Transfer from North Texas, Mark Wilson, will be eligible after
the fall the semester. Arizona “AZ” Reid, Anthony Harris, Jerald Minnis and
Terrance Stokes round out a solid group of incoming freshmen that will
ensure that High Point will be Big South contenders for years to come.
Who to Watch: Forward Danny
Gathings led the Panthers to the Big South title game last year and if they
are to make it past that game it will have to be on his shoulders. During
his junior campaign, Gathings led the team with 15.8 points and eight
rebounds per game.
Projected Conference Rank:
High Point should be better than 10-6 in conference play and contend for the
conference title this year, but they will fall just short and finish in 2nd
place.
Projected Post-season
Tournament: none
