2003-04 postseason: NCAA

Amidst
the hoopla of Saint Joseph’s search for an undefeated season and Xavier’s
late season run, Dayton put together an excellent squad. Brian Gregory is
collecting a team in Dayton that will compete for many years. A lot of
talent and scoring power is lost, but a stable group of newcomers will have
the Flyers competing with the best teams in the A-10.
Who’s Out: The dynamic trio
of Ramod Marshall, Keith Waleskowski and Sean Finn has run out of
eligibility. Individually they all averaged over 13 points per game.
Waleskowski and Finn were monsters on the boards grabbing 9.9 and 7.4,
respectively. Marshall was the floor leader, dishing out 5.2 assists per
contest. Frank Iguodala saw limited minutes, but played in all 33 games.
Also leaving is walk-on guard Greg Kohls, who only played in five games all
of his senior season.
Who’s In: Norman Plummer is
a huge pickup for the Flyers. The 6-7 power forward can score in the
interior and is becoming a better outside shooter. Plummer should see
plenty of minutes as a freshman, helping to replace Waleskowski and Finn.
Small forward Jimmy Binnie is an all around solid player who can play at
either the two or three spot. Chris Alvarez will add more depth under the
basket. Trent Meacham will be running the team in a year or two. The 6-2
point guard is a smart player and will see some time backing up Mark Jones
this season. Brian Roberts is a solid shooter and can play either guard
position if necessary.
Who to Watch: Mark Jones
will replace Ramod Marshall as the point guard. As a junior last year,
Jones averaged 9.1 points, 3.5 boards and 2.5 assists per game. He’ll have
to increase the assists number and Jones definitely has the ability to do so
now that he has his chance to run the show. Jones averaged 3.4 assists as a
sophomore for the Flyers. The 6-1, 180 pounder is a truly unselfish
player. He isn’t flashy and tends to keep his passes crisp, thus keeps the
turnovers to a minimum.
Projected Conference Rank:
The Flyers won’t be able to repeat their 2nd place finish and
trip to the NCAA Tournament. Losing Marshall, Waleskowski and Finn is too
much to presume that. The talent is there to compete, but finishing 7th
place in the Atlantic 10 would be expected.
Projected Post-season
Tournament: none
