Games of the Night: UCLA at Washington State

February 7th, 2008

Games of the Night

A companion to our daily Three Stars of the Day, we present the top three Games of the Night.

#4 UCLA (20-2) at #17 Washington State (17-4)

10:30 PM FSN

Since UCLA beat WSU back on January 12th, the Bruins have continued to play well while the Cougars have gone into a little funk, losing 3 of 4 games. You'd normally think the home court advantage would be a huge factor, but UCLA hasn't lost away from Pauley while State's lost 2 in a row in Pullman. They key tonight will be Derrick Low, as the Cougars have become a bit too dependent on the senior for offense. When he gets hot from three, they play well.. when he's off, the team loses. In the three recent losses, Low is 3 for 21 (14%) from downtown, but in their last three wins he's 13 of 26 (50%). This game is so close I'd rather not pick it.

Prediction: Washington State

Rhode Island (19-3) at UMASS (14-7)

8:00 PM

UMASS had a fine non-conference season, but are just 3-4 in A10 play after losing 3 of 4 games. This puts them way down in a tie for 10th place in the deep league. Still, bracketologists like Joe Lunardi have the Minutemen either in the Field of 65 or right on the fringe at this point. But lets be serious, the committee won't take a team hovering around .500 in the A10. Rhode Island is also doing its best to stay inside the bubble, so this game has major tournament implications. A big issue for URI is the health of Will Daniels, coming off a sprained ankle. He's going to play, but the Rams need their best player to be 100%.

Prediction: UMASS

CS Northridge (15-5) at Pacific (15-6)

10:00 PM

1st and 2nd get together in an important Big West showdown. The last times these two teams met, Pacific had a lead at half until Northridge blew them away (53-30) in the second stanza. Turnovers were a major issue for the Tigers then (they had 28), and its been an issue all season. Northridge is a better overall team with more depth, but the X-factor is Pacific's Chad Troyer. If he gets hot from three, the Tigers are very dangerous.

Prediction: Pacific
