NBA Draft Profile: Spencer Hawes
NBA Draft: Spencer Hawes
College: Washington
Class: Freshman
Stats: ESPN.com
Position: C
Height: 7’0”
Weight: 250lbs
Accolades: McDonald’s All-American – high school (06), All-American – high school – EA Sports and Parade Magazine, USA Today All-USA Prep Basketball First Team – high school (06), Gatorade Player of the Year – Washington – high school (06), U.S. Under-18 Men’s Team (06), USA Junior National Select Team (06).
Scouting Report: A supremely skilled 7-footer.
Strengths: Great shot blocker. Can score in the post with turnaround jumpers and hook shots with both hands. Excellent passer with great court vision. Good rebounder. Very good free throw shooter. Great hands for a big man. Good face up jump shooter with above average range for a center.
Weaknesses: Needs to get physically stronger – unable to always acquire and keep deep post position because of lack of strength. Very inexperienced with only one year of college ball under his belt. Too turnover prone for the center position – had nine games so far with four or more turnovers this season.
Projected 2007 Draft Range: Top 10 pick.
Consensus: In the year of Oden & Durant, Hawes is the forgotten frosh out on the west coast. However, with his skill set and size he will be a very, very good NBA player. He just needs to get physically stronger and more experience first.
