2009 NBA Draft Skills Challenge: Best Scorers

While the 2009 NBA Draft isn't loaded with deadly long-range bombers, there are definitely some guys adept at getting the ball in the hoop. Blake Griffin isn't a traditional scorer from the SG or SF position, but he can score the ball in a variety of ways. Stephen Curry can light it up with the best of them, and some of our experts considered him the best scorer available, even better than the probable #1 pick. The highly efficient James Harden appears in everyone's lists, but opinion is mixed. Meanwhile, Jodie Meeks and Marcus Thornton shredded the SEC last year, but our opinions on those guys were highly scattered. Dionte Christmas, Tyrese Rice, and Jermaine Taylor were some of the less-heralded prospects given some love.

2009 NBA Draft Skills Challenge: Top Shooters

On the most part, the 2009 NBA Draft is not know for deadly long-range shooters. However, there's no doubt that our consensus top shooter Stephen Curry can bomb from long-range. Big-name players like Wayne Ellington, Marcus Thornton, and Jodie Meeks can also heat up from long-range, but all are considered streak shooters. Meanwhile there are less-heralded prospects like Lee Cummard, Toney Douglas, and Jack McClinton, all of whom can hit threes in bunches.

Prospect Report: Top 10 College Prospects

Joey Whelan's prospect report ranks the best in college hoops every other week. The previous ranking is in parentheses.

1. Blake Griffin – Oklahoma (1)

The name of this column should be changed to “Top 10 Prospects After Blake Griffin” because barring injury, the Sooner big man will not be supplanted from his lofty perch; not while competing at the college level. Since entering conference play in the Big 12 the sophomore has averaged 22.4 points and 13.2 rebounds while shooting nearly 54% from the field. It isn’t just the numbers though, it’s the out of this world athleticism that makes Griffin one of the few players in the country who I will make me stop whatever I am doing to watch.

2. James Harden – Arizona State (2)

For the first time all year Harden looked human after his 4-point, 0-8 performance in a loss versus USC. The nation’s top shooting guard has rebounded nicely though, going over the 20-point mark in the Sun Devils last two games; wins over UCLA and Arizona.

3. Greg Monroe – Georgetown (3)

Likely the top freshman in the country at this point, Monroe is continuing to post consistent, solid numbers in Big East play. In his last five games he has accumulated averages of 12.6 points, 7.8 rebounds and 4.4 assists, not overwhelmingly impressive alone, but when taking into account the amount of talent on Georgetown, it’s safe to say Monroe would post higher numbers elsewhere. His near triple-double in a win over Providence was one of his best showings of the season.

4. Jordan Hill – Arizona (5)

Hill just seems to be getting better and better each time he steps out onto the court. He almost single handedly carried Arizona to a come from behind win over Houston on Saturday, netting a season high 30 points to go along with 18 rebounds and 4 blocks. In seven Pac-10 games, Hill has four double-doubles.

5. Jeff Teague – Wake Forest (NA)

NBA scouts love to see good players step up in big games; Teague has done just that. In the two biggest games of the year for the Demon Decons (wins over UNC and Clemson) the sophomore guard averaged 29 points, 4 rebounds and 4.5 assists. He had an excellent run during Wake’s non conference schedule, and has been nothing short of red hot since ACC play has started. This combo guard is getting more and more popular by the game.

6. Earl Clark – Louisville (7)

The Cardinals are on a roll, standing atop the Big East at 6-0 including wins over four ranked conference opponents. Clark may be on an even bigger roll after posting double-doubles in all four wins over ranked teams. In fact, the only game that Clark hasn’t recorded a double-double in the past 2+ weeks came in a win over Rutgers last Wednesday.

7. Hasheem Thabeet – Connecticut (6)

Given his massive frame, shock blocking ability and enticing potential, it is going to take a lot to knock Thabeet out of the top ten. With that said, the senior center hasn’t exactly been putting together strings of great game lately. His 15 and 17 showing in a win over Seton Hall last week was his first big game in several weeks.

8. Stephen Curry – Davidson (8)

Curry looks like he may have regained his shooting touch, albeit against the less than competitive SoCon, but he is hitting his shots nonetheless. Davidson has won six straight, and their star has recorded back to back 30-point games while shooting a stellar 13-22 from beyond the arc in those two games.

9. Ty Lawson – North Carolina (4)

Lawson’s scoring consistency as started to waiver somewhat recently, and he had a poor shooting performance in the biggest game of the year so far for the Tar Heels; a loss to Wake Forest. The assist numbers have stayed up though, as the junior has still managed to heavily influence the action on the floor, dishing out more than 7 assists per game in his last four games.

10. B.J. Mullens – Ohio State (NA)

The thing about being a physically gifted 7-footer with loads of potential is that with the faintest signs of developing on the court and your stock starts climbing again. After a slow start where he wasn’t seeing much playing time, Mullens has reached double figure scoring and played at least twenty minutes in his last six games.

Dropped Out: Kyle Singler (9), Gani Lawal (10)

Next in Line: Kyle Singler, Duke; Patrick Patterson, Kentucky; Demar DeRozan, USC; Willie Warren, Oklahoma; Gani Lawal, Georgia Tech

Rising

Jodie Meeks – Kentucky

Ok, so clearly at this point this shouldn’t come as a shock to see his name here given the last two weeks, but Meeks has yet to be mentioned in this space. The 54 points dropped on Tennessee was ridiculous, there is no other word for it. But combine that with a 28-point showing against Louisville and the fact that he has yet to fail to eclipse 20 points just once in over a month, and Meeks’ stock is scorching right now.

At 6’4” he will be an undersized shooting guard at the next level, so to really help his stock he needs to improve on his ability to distribute the basketball, become more of a combo guard. His range and ability to create off the dribble though are more than enough to entice teams to take a good long look at Meeks and at the very least invite him to participate in the summer league.

Falling

Greivis Vasquez – Maryland

Ever since the Terps reeled off seven straight wins in their non conference schedule Vasquez has been struggling to find the basket. Over his last six games the junior is shooting just 27.9% from the field and an abysmal 15.6% from beyond the arc. Making matters worse he has been getting into it with Maryland fans and prior to the drubbing the Terps received at the hands of Duke, Vasquez was popping off about owning Cameron Indoor Stadium. In Maryland’s toughest test of the season their floor general managed 4 points on 2-10 shooting with 2 assists.

Scouting Report: The deadliest scorer in college basketball.

Strengths: Scoring machine - can get you 30 even on an off night. Can hit shots from anywhere on the floor. Very crafty - finds ways to score. Can hit tough shots with defenders all over him. Proved his junior season that he can run the point on the college level. Great three-point shooter. Shoots for high % from everywhere (FG, FT, 3pt). Very good footwork. Great at moving without the ball. Solid ball handler. Gets tons of steals. Clutch player. Used to double and triple teams. Takes good care of the ball - solid assist to turnover ratio his junior season. Unselfish - good at setting up teammates. Good pedigree - dad Del played 16 years in the NBA.

Weaknesses: Not a standout athlete - not especially quick or a high leaper. Slight build - needs to add strength and muscle. Will be small for the NBA - even for the point guard position. Other than his junior year he played mostly shooting guard in college - can he play the point in the NBA? While Davidson plays a tough non-conference schedule, their competition in the Southern Conference is rather weak.

Projected 2009 Draft Range: Lottery pick.

Consensus: One of the great debates of this year’s draft class is how good of a pro Stephen Curry will be. While it is highly doubtful he will be as good in the NBA as he is in college, he has enough tools to have a fighting chance to excel in the NBA. Whether he can play point guard in the NBA might be the biggest determinant as to what kind of career he will have.

Question of the Week: How Good Will Stephen Curry Be in the NBA?

This Week's Question: How Good will Stephen Curry Do in the NBA?

Recent "college" scoring stars.. the one's that actually made their names in the NCAA like Adam Morrison and JJ Redick have all disappointed in the pros. Even after averaging 25.9 ppg last year and leading his team to some big-time Tournament wins, Curry had more pro doubters than supporters.

His rap sheet goes like this: He's too short (listed at 6-3 but that's exaggerated). He's too skinny and frail (180 pounds). He's not fast enough to make up for his lack of size. He's not a point guard. If you're that small, you can only make it as a point guard, not a shooting guard. He won't be able to defend NBA 2-guards or point guards. His 3 pt % is good for college (about 42% for his career), but he'd need to be lights out from NBA range to cut it in the pros.

With all that said, as Curry has taken his game to another level this season, carrying the Wildcats on his back with a 31.3 ppg, 6.4 apg, and 3.0 spg, it seems like consensus is growing that Curry can cut it at the highest level.

This is an odd time in college basketball.. the pre-season tournaments already seem in the distant past, and hyped events like the ACC/BigTen challenge have also been completed. Outside of this week's Jimmy V Classic (featuring our Player of the Week), we begin the slow descent into the Christmas lull when students are on break, and teams mostly begin to gear up for conference play. But do not despair, there were still more than enough big-time games and superstar players in action who managed to put up some All-American type performances.

In two season-changing wins over ranked teams, Ohio State was led by sophomore Evan Turner who averaged 23.5 points per game against Miami and Notre Dame. Michigan's DeShawn Sims broke personal highs by scoring 28 points and 12 boards in a win over #4 Duke (we won't mention the OT debacle against Savannah St). Meanwhile, senior guard AJ Abrams came up clutch with 31 points in a hard-fought win over #8 UCLA. The Longhorns sharphooter is now hitting threes at a 44% clip. Lastly, our Mid-Major Player of the Week, Eric Maynor, lit it up all week averaging 25 ppg in 3 games.

But this week's top honor goes to Davidson's Stephen Curry. The Wildcats only played one game this week, but they needed all 44 of the junior's points to outlast in-state rival North Carolina State. Curry tied his career-high of 44, set earlier against Oklahoma, by hitting 15 of 33 shots (both career-highs as well). On the season, he's averaging a whopping 31.3 ppg, which includes a scoreless game in which the opponent decided to double team him the entire time. Even though Curry unloads shots at an Allen Iverson-like pace, his efficiency is impressive as his field goal % remains at .504. As Curry's point totals continue to rise, the diminutive guard's NBA Draft stock continues to grow as well. Once thought of as being to short and skinny to perform and the pro level, scouts are beginning to realize that this kid can simply play.
