NCAA Tournament: All-Time Buzzer-Beaters

Buzzer beaters bring upon one thing. Flesh piles. Everyone storms the court and jumps on one another almost to the point where I wouldn’t want to be the guy to hit the game winning shot. Kids practice fade-aways, leaners, and shots they adjust in mid-air all while counting down in their heads an imaginary game clock. 3…2…1. Anyone who has played basketball has done this. I still do it to this day. College basketball fans have not just watched these moments, but lived them…

Tyus Edney (UCLA) over Mizzou

UCLA went on to win the 1995 National Championship, but not before some heroics by Tyus Edney. Edney’s heroics took place in a second round matchup between No. 1 UCLA and No. 8 Missouri. The Bruins found themselves trailing 74-73 with 4.8 seconds left. Coach Jim Harrick called a timeout and turned to Edney rather than star player Ed O’Bannon. One of the best names in college basketball history, Cameron Dollar, was set to inbound the basketball. Sidenote: How good was this 1995 team? The O’Bannon brothers, Edney, Dollar, Toby Bailey, JR Henderson; they lost one game all season, going 32-1. So…Edney catches the inbounds pass, races up the left sideline, avoids a defender with a behind-the-back dribble. This move may be more memorable than the actual shot; it’s an instinct move. It was done perfectly. He rises up, adjusts his shot and mid air and banks home the winner. UCLA 75 Missouri 74.

Richard Hamilton (Connecticut) over Washington

You ever hear the phrase “third time’s a charm?” Well for some Huskies it was. In this case, Connecticut. Connecticut and Washington faced off in the Sweet Sixteen of the 1998 tournament. Washington’s Donald Watts hit a trey to put Washington up 74-73 with about 33 seconds left. Khalid, a freshman at the time, drove the lane and dumped the ball down low to Jake Voskuhl. 15 seconds. He missed a jumper. Hamilton grabbed the board and failed an attempt. The ball was tapped up again in the air by Kevin Freeman before it hit the hands of Hamilton again. Perfect time to insert this. Now why do players wait until about 5 seconds left before they make a move? I understand if the game is tied, you must, must, take the last shot. However, I have seen on numerous occasions when a team is down they still wait until about 5-6 seconds before gearing it up. Why? Please learn from this. Okay. Hamilton finds the ball and seems to lose his balance sending a fadeaway up that finds the bottom of the net. UConn prevails over Washington.

Bryce Drew (Valparaiso) over Ole Miss

It’s all in the family. Bryce Drew was named Indiana’s Mr. Basketball in 1994 before playing for Homer Drew, his father, at Valparaiso. Bryce Drew is currently an associate coach at Valpo and will most likely take over the head coaching position once his father calls it quits. Meanwhile, Bryce’s uncle, Scott, is the head coach at Baylor. Got all that? Bryce is mostly known for this play. This infamous shot took place in a first round matchup in the 1998 tourney between No. 4 Ole Miss and No. 13 Valparaiso. With Valpo trailing by two, and 4.1 seconds left, Mississippi’s Ansu Sesay went to the charity stripe for two. He bricked both. Valpo ball with 2.5 seconds remaining. Coach Drew called out a play known as Pacer. Jamie Sykes heaved a pass to Bill Jenkins who then shoveled it off to Bryce Drew. Bryce got the 23 footer off in time. Flesh pile on Bryce…Valparaiso 70 Ole Miss 69. Valparaiso would win their next game against Florida State in overtime behind Drew’s 22 points. They were eliminated in the Sweet Sixteen by Rhode Island.

Christian Laettner (Duke) over Kentucky

This shot may own the record for most commercial appearances of all time. Many people don’t realize Laettner was almost ejected earlier in this game. It all happened in the 1992 East regional final game. Laettner stepped on the chest of Kentucky’s Aminu Timberlake while tying to find his balance. He was hit with a technical, but not ejected. Fast forwarding now to 2.1 seconds to play and Grant Hill is ready to play quarterback. Why is no one guarding the inbounder? How is no one fronting Duke’s go-to-guy? There are tons and tons of questions that can be asked here. Coaches everywhere have learned from Pitino’s decisions, but honestly, who knew? Score check: Kentucky 103 Duke 102 (in OT). Grant launches a pass to the foul line where Laettner catches the pass and has the presence of mind to put the ball on the floor, make a move, and create space. Splash, 104-103. Then we see my favorite part of the clip, Thomas Hill putting his hands on his head in disbelief. He’s a smart man avoiding the chaos on the court. Stay on the sidelines where it’s safe. Laettner had 31 points, was 10-10 from the field, and 10-10 from the line. A perfect night.

Lorenzo Charles (NC State) over Houston

Houston seemed unbeatable. Let’s face it, Jim Valvano and the “Cardiac Pack” were going against Akeem Olajuwon (that’s right, before the “H” slid in there) and Clyde Drexler. Houston was beating teams by an average of 18 points. No team had ever won a National Championship with as many losses as N.C. State had, 10. N.C. State truly defined what a Cinderella team was. With 1:08 remaining, and the game tied at 52, Houston freshman guard Alvin Franklin approached the line for a 1 and 1. He clanked the first, N.C. State ball. The Wolfpack then called a timeout with 44 seconds left to play. N.C. State made 17 passes in all during this final possession, before Whittenburg threw up a prayer that fell short. Lorenzo Charles meanwhile slipped into the lane, unguarded, grabs the ball, which was clearly short and slams it home right before time expires. We all know the story. Now watch this clip. Why does no one jump on Charles? He just won the game. Jimmy V doesn’t know who to celebrate with. Everyone just rushes the court. It almost seems as if everyone is running after Whittenburg. How can you not jump on Charles??? Ahhhhh the Cardiac Pack.

Last Second Heroics

It doesn't take much to get fans excited about the NCAA Tournament. It is after all, the greatest sporting event.. ever. But just to get you even more pumped up, here's a rundown of this year's end of game buzzer-beating heroics.. a taste of what you should expect during March Madness.

Cedric Jackson (Cleveland State) over Syracuse

Quick play-by-play: Cleveland State hits a 3 to go up 5 with 24 seconds left to play. Syracuse comes right down the floor and Jonny Flynn buries a 3 in the corner, Orange down 2. The ensuing inbounds pass gets deflected, last touched by Cleveland State. Now there’s 15 seconds left and it’s ‘Cuse ball. Rautins misses a 3 to take the lead…Onuaku (his name gets butchered in this clip) grabs an uncontested rebound and puts it back to tie the game. Then the impossible happens…a 60 footer, yes sixty, by Cedric Jackson. An unreal shot. Cleveland State wouldn’t have been in that situation if they met my friend the ‘box out’ or could inbound the rock. Then again if they had done those things I guess I wouldn’t even be writing this paragraph right now.

Ty Lawson (UNC) over Florida State

Ty Lawson needs a nickname. I’d call him Flash but D-Wade’s got that. I’d call him Bolt, but then I think of Usain. Well after successfully Googling “Ty Lawson Nickname”, I found Teleport. I love it. I am now referring to him as the Teleport (maybe even T-Port??). Moving on…UNC and FSU are tied at 77 a piece with 3.2 seconds remaining. The inbounds pass comes into Teleport and living up to his nickname he blows by a defender and hits a running 3 as time expires to give the Tar Heels an 80-77 victory. "I just ran with it," Lawson said. "There wasn't enough time to get a pass off." That about sums it up.

James Johnson (Wake Forest) over Duke

Dick Vitale has been around the game a long time. He loves going to Cameron and crowd surfing. Let’s face it, he has a bias towards Duke. It was great to hear him literally call out exactly what was going to happen during this final play. The game is tied at 68 between Wake and Duke. Wake is inbounding the ball underneath their basket with 2.6 to play. James Johnson sets a screen then immediately slips it and cuts to the basket for the easy deuce. (fast forward to 3:25 for the play and to listen to Vitale). “Johnson’s the guy, watch Johnson with that size, throw the ball up top to Johnson.” If I am Dickie V, I am screaming I told you so! Johnson scored with .8 seconds left to win it for Wake.

Josh Carter (Texas A&M) over Nebraska

Texas A&M was down 18 at one point early on in the second half. Nebraska managed to score just 7 points in the final 14 minutes. Nebraska also struggled from the charity stripe late in the game. College basketball’s best name, Cookie Miller, clanked two freebies for Nebraska with 19.5 seconds left. After exchanging turnovers, Nebraska committed a foul to set up the final play of the game for the Aggies trailing 55-54. Josh Carter came off a down screen with 2.6 seconds left and hit a three as time expired. The Aggies won 57-55.

Antonio Anderson (Memphis) over Tulsa

Memphis was on the road and trailing by one to Tulsa. Antonio Anderson catches the ball at half-court and just goes the distance. There was no stopping him. The basket helped preserve the Tigers 45 game winning streak in Conference USA games. Great quote from John Calipari…When I saw Antonio had a lane to the rim, I just closed my eyes and hoped," Calipari said. "We practice that play a lot and the kids know there is plenty of time to get to the rim."

Anthony Brock (Alabama) over Tennessee

Anthony Brock wasn’t even supposed to be in Knoxville. "We had a flight for him ... and he missed it so he drove all night to get here," Alabama coach Philip Pearson said. Brock and his cousin hopped in a car and drove to the game after Brock attended his grandmother’s funeral. His grandmother was watching over him. With the game tied at 77, Tennessee had a chance to take the lead. The Volunteers missed a shot on what they hoped would be the last possession of the game and the ball went out of bounds to Alabama with about five seconds left to play. Anthony Brock picked a great time to his only shot in the second half. Brock pulled up from the second to last “E” in Tennessee and banked home the winner. Alabama 80 Tennessee 77.

Edgar Sosa (Louisville) over Kentucky

Kentucky’s Jodie Meeks tried to steal the show. He scored seven straight points on five free throws and a layup to tie the game at 71. Louisville now has the ball with 23 seconds left and ultimately the last possession in regulation. Who does Pitino turn to? Potential lottery pick Earl Clark? Maybe their do it all guy Terrence Williams? I would have expected the latter. They inbound the ball to Sosa and he calmly dribbles over half court. He then waves off a screen and buries a 25 footer with 2.8 seconds left. This was a huge win for the Cardinals. They had already lost to Western Kentucky, Minnesota, and UNLV. This game may have turned their season around.

Kaylon Williams (Evansville) over Drake

Weather played a factor here. How is weather a factor in an indoor sport? Well, this game was originally scheduled the day before, but due to inclement weather it was pushed back a day. Kaylon Williams used the day off to practice shooting running half court shots apparently. I mean, who wouldn’t? Williams’ three, from half court, as time expired lifted Evansville over Drake. A running half court shot at that.

Ben Woodside (ND State) over Oakland in Summit Championship

It’s no secret who North Dakota State’s go to guy is. That’s why North Dakota State coach Saul Phillips decided there was no need to call a timeout. Once he saw that Ben Woodside had the ball in his hands he figured if he called a timeout that Oakland would face guard him and not allow Woodside to touch the ball. "I've been working on my offense for a while," Phillips said. "It's called 'get the ball to Woodside and get out of the way.' It's been effective." Woodside hit an off-balanced 17 footer with 3 seconds left to give the Bison the win. North Dakota State was a D-II school last year and seemed to make an easy transition into being a D-I school.

Dallas Green (Robert Morris) over Mount St. Mary’s in NEC Championship

The score was tied at halftime and again tied with seconds to play. Robert Morris usually doesn’t look to Dallas Green to take the last shot or to shoot really ever for that matter. Robert Morris top scorer Jeremy Chappell, team high 15 points, originally planned on being the hero. Chappell began to make his move and got the ball knocked away from him. Dallas Green happened to be at the right spot at the right time. He may have even closed his eyes and then put up a jumper. The ball fell through the hoop with 2.5 seconds remaining to help punch Robert Morris’ ticket to the Big Dance.

ROBERT MORRIS: DANCING

Robert Morris is heading to the Big Dance for the first time since 1992. This is a video shot from the crowd as Dallas Green hits the game winning shot with a few seconds to go, after picking up a loose ball. Listen for the "oh no" in the crowd as RMU loses the ball, and then the shrieks when the baseline shot goes in.

Booker Woodfox Hits a Game-Winner: Clip of the Day

BOOKER WOODFOX: GAME-WINNER

Besides having a great name, Woodfox is also clutch, as evidenced by his game-winner in the MVC Quarterfinals. But should the shot have counted? Look at how long the clock takes to start once Woodfox catches the ball. Either way, WSU's season is done, and Creighton followed up their fortuitous finish by getting rocked by Illinois St in the semis.

Battered and Bloodied: The Year in College Basketball Videos

This college basketball season has been an interesting one to say the least. Like any other year we have seen teams rise and fall. We have seen great individual performances, nail biting games, and buzzer beaters…but this year has also been entertaining for other reasons. There have been ejections, cheap shots, and even a face stomp. Here’s a collection of videos on the “controversial” events that have occurred already this season…

Taxicab Confession

Ole Miss coach Andy Kennedy was arrested on December 18 for punching a Cincinnati cab driver and shouting racial slurs at him. The cab driver told police that he picked up Kennedy and his friends after they were kicked out of a bar. The problem apparently began when the cab driver instructed Kennedy that there wasn’t enough room for everyone to fit in the cab. Since the arrest, a police video has been released of the incident. I hope HBO airs this on an episode of Taxicab Confessions.

Pat Knight’s Impersonation of Usain Bolt

Texas Tech coach Pat Knight decided to take a page out of his father’s book in his latest tirade. The Red Raiders coach Usain Bolted out onto the court to argue a call in a recent game against Nebraska. Coach Knight confronted one official on the far sideline, who assessed him his first technical, and then confronted another official at midcourt, who then assessed the coach with another technical. Both techs led to his ejection. His assistant coaches then led him off the floor, but Knight wasn’t finished. He ran back to midcourt to let the refs hear more about his side of things.

Slap Heard Around the World

Miami Florida guard Jack McClinton doesn’t like to play nice. McClinton was ejected after slapping Ohio State guard Anthony Crater in the face during their ACC-Big Ten Challenge matchup in December. McClinton was standing in front of the Ohio State bench when the altercation occurred. He was apparently reacting to Crater swiping at him. Video

Do you remember the first slap that had donned this title? For those of you who watch MTV’s Real World you might. It’s the infamous Stephen vs. Irene fight in Real World Seattle. Stephen slapped Irene right in the face as she jumped in the car. This is right after he threw one of her stuffed animals in the river. Stand up guy.

Below The Belt

USC’s Leonard Washington was ejected after delivering a low blow to Preseason All-American Blake Griffin. The refs called a foul and reviewed the play. Upon seeing the cheap shot they assessed a flagrant foul on Washington and he was ejected from the game. Griffin immediately hit the floor after getting the wind, amongst other things, knocked out of him. Washington played his own version of just the tip.

Disney’s Stomp the Yard…or Face?

Houston’s Aubrey Coleman may have thought he was auditioning for his own version of a Disney movie. Coleman stepped directly onto Arizona forward Chase Budinger’s face. I am honestly surprised there wasn’t more retaliation. This may have been the dirtiest play of all time. Budinger got up fast and luckily other players and refs intervened rather quickly so nothing further happened.

Throw Them Bows

Michigan’s Manny Harris’ flagrant flying elbow on Purdue’s Chris Kramer got him ejected. I was watching this game, from my couch with my snuggie (half joking), and didn’t think Harris deserved to be ejected. There are ways to swing through and then there are ways not to swing through. He was making a “basketball” move. He was trying to create space and don’t think he was making this in a malicious way. Its unfortunate that Kramer was injured on the play and I think in the end the correct call was made.

Brotherly Love

Providence guard Jeff Xavier was driving to the lane when he was inadvertently hit in the eye on his way to the basket. Xavier immediately hit the floor, followed by his brother. Jonathan Xavier, Jeff’s brother, ran down the stairs of the Dunkin Donuts Center, hopped over the Marquette bench and approached a referee. All of this happened while Geoff McDermott was on the foul line. I think this is the closest a Friar fan has come to rushing the court since the 90’s.

Unfriendly Owl

I have seen mascots fighting mascots and plenty of antics that these usually friendly and furry creatures get themselves into, but this is something entirely different. Rice’s Sammy the Owl was ejected from a game against Tulane after head butting a ref. He used his giant foam head to get his point across. His loyalty to the team is no longer questioned.
