Jon Teitel's "Forgotten Legends" Series: Lewis College Great Wayne Molis

In the latest installment in his "Forgotten Legends" interview series CHN writer Jon Teitel spent some time with Todd Molis, brother of the late Wayne Molis. Wayne began his collegiate career at Chicago State (then Chicago Teachers College) before transferring to Lewis University for his final two seasons. Wayne holds the school record at both schools for points scored in a single game to this day.

Jon Teitel: Wayne's nickname was "Big Moe", and he later had a bar in Chicago called "Big Moe's". Who gave him the nickname, and how did he like it?

Todd Molis: That is all he ever went by. He got the nickname in high school because by then he was already 6'8".

JT: He attended Chicago Teachers College (now Chicago State) for two years before transferring to Lewis University, where he became an All-American. Why did he switch schools and what did it mean to him to win such an outstanding individual honor?

TM: He broke his ankle after the first game of his junior year, and got an extra year of eligibility from the NCAA before transferring to Lewis. Being named All-American was the highlight of his basketball career. I also played for the varsity at Teachers while my brother was at Lewis, and one time I got put into the game to guard him. He let me get past him for an uncontested layup, and everyone was cracking up because they could tell what happened!

JT: He still holds the Lewis school record for field goals in a game with 20 against Chicago Teachers in 1964. Do you think he might have been out for revenge against his old team, and what made him such a great shooter?

TM: He was not out for revenge. He just wanted to play basketball. What is amazing is that he not only holds the Lewis record for points in a game, but also holds the Teachers record for points in a game...which he did against Lewis before ending up there! He later went to the weddings of some of his old teammates at Teachers because he remained friends with them.

JT: In the summer of 1965 he was drafted in the 10th round by the Knicks, but was released soon after that. Was he thrilled to realize his dream of getting drafted or disappointed that he did not make the team?

TM: He was definitely disappointed, but ended up playing amateur ball because he just wanted to keep his skills sharp.

JT: He played amateur basketball for one year before returning to the Knicks. How did he like amateur basketball, and how did he feel about going back to New York?

TM: He played for the Jamaco Saints under owner Jack Mathis, and the Knicks asked him to come back the following year. He also played with an Argentinian team in a tournament in Spain.

JT: In 1967 he made the playoffs with the Knicks before losing to Boston. How big a deal was it for him to make the playoffs, and did he make it sound like there was a big difference between the regular season and the playoffs?

TM: He often said that playing with the Knicks was the high point of his life, despite making a whopping $14,000 per year. He did not get on the court a lot, so it was a big deal to make the playoffs because the bonus was around $750 per player! He saw Philly warming up before a game one night, and saw Wilt stretch out with his feet on the ground and touch the rim. He said Wilt must have been at least 7'4"! One year he had us come to St. Louis and sit opposite the TV cameras in the front three rows so that it would look like there were actually people at the game!

JT: In the summer of 1967 he switched to the ABA for its inaugural season. Why did he make the change, and was he nervous about joining a brand new league?

TM: Oakland drafted him from the Knicks, but after their coach told him to rebound instead of shoot Oakland released him and he went to Houston. He was a great outside shooter, and had never been asked to spend all of his time hitting the boards.

JT: He later suffered a career-ending knee injury while working over the summer as a Bedford Park firefighter (although he continued to be a firefighter for the next eight years). Did he feel frustrated that he could not go out on his own terms, and how did he like bring a firefighter?

TM: He really liked being a firefighter after bouncing around a couple of other jobs. When the chance came to buy the bar, he did. He loved being a bartender because he could talk sports with his customers all day.

JT: He went back to college and earned a degree in history from Lewis in 1971. How important were academics to your family, and what did he end up doing after getting his degree?

TM: He used the degree to be a substitute teacher on his days off from the firehouse, but did not really enjoy teaching. My family grew up during the Depression, so my dad had to leave school early to get a job to support the family. It was important for me and my two siblings to finish our education and graduate because my parents did not get the chance to do so themselves.

JT: His son Brian played basketball at Colorado before transferring to Northern Illinois and having to deal with a number of physical and emotional challenges (arthroscopic knee surgery, surgery for a bone chip in his left ankle, a cracked tibia, then his mother/grandfather dying later that year). How hard was it for Wayne to see everything that Brian had to go through, and how supportive was your family during that time?

TM: My brother and I went to a lot of Brian's games, and Brian was basically living to watch his brother Derek play basketball, which was the greatest thing. Derek played basketball at Fordham, but transferred to Loyola after getting homesick. Derek set a bunch of three-point shooting records at Loyola despite only playing there for two years, and he now has a basketball school called "The Athlete Within" and runs several AAU teams. Brian is now a very successful salesman, so they all turned out okay.

Molis is also on Jon's list of best pro players in Great West history.

Chicago State: Wayne Molis (1967)

Houston Baptist: EC Coleman (1974)

NJIT: NO ALUMNI IN ABA/NBA

North Dakota: Phil Jackson (1968)

South Dakota: NO ALUMNI IN ABA/NBA

Texas Pan American: Lucious Jackson (1965)

Utah Valley University: Ronnie Price (2006)

Jon Teitel's Coaches Interview Series: Chicago State's Bob Hallberg

In the latest installment of his coaches interview series CHN writer Jon Teitel spent some time with former Chicago State head coach Bob Hallberg, who racked up a record of 223-84 in ten years at the Windy City school. Hallberg led the Cougars to a third place finish in the 1984 NAIA Tournament, capping off one of the most successful seasons in school history.

Jon Teitel: In high school you played for legendary coach Jim Arneberg. What was it like to play for him, and how much of an influence was he on your own decision to go into coaching?

Bob Hallberg: The defining moment in my life that changed my whole career was not making the varsity squad as a sophomore in high school. Coach Arneberg brought me up to the varsity for the playoffs, and to my surprise he grabbed me by the shoulders during a game and told me to "get in there and steal the ball." I went out there and played like I was possessed because he was such a great motivator, and I made up my mind to go into coaching soon after that.

JT: You began your collegiate coaching career at St. Xavier after starting out as a high school coach. What was the biggest difference between coaching high school players and coaching college players?

BH: One advantage of college coaching is being able to recruit players, and I have always believed that you can only win with good players. Some coaches think they can win with any kind of players due to their coaching ability, but they are wrong. College players are also more talented and athletic than high school players.

JT: In 1977 you became coach at Chicago State and went 25-5 in your first season. Why did you make the switch, and how were you able to be so successful so quickly?

BH: I have a bad gym story that tops them all. At St. Xavier we had an intramural gym with no bleachers: we did not even have enough room for a regulation college court. I went to Chicago ST for the facility, and I increased my coaching salary by a whopping $4,000, which was very good considering I had a wife and two kids. The main reason we won so many games is because we had good talent.

1984 NAIA Tournament

JT: Darron Brittman scored 31 points in a one-point double overtime win over Kearney State that saw both teams combine for 69 fouls. Was that the most physical game you have even seen?

BH: At one time it was considered to be the most exciting game in NAIA tourney history even though a lot of people do not remember it now. It was a very high-scoring game despite not having a three-point line at that time. We were down nineteen points before we even knew what happened, and I called over my two star players and told them that they were choking in front of a huge crowd. That seemed to get us going, and it was an amazing comeback victory for us.

JT: Your next game was a two-point win over Chaminade. How close did you come to losing that game?

BH: They had a 6'5" All-American, but Charles Perry hit a jumper over him with three seconds left, despite being only 5'10". Perry was known as "Captain Video" due to the goggles he wore.

JT: Your "Heart Attack Kids" had a two-point overtime loss in the semifinals to Fort Hays State. How devastating was the loss, and what was the feeling like in your locker room afterwards?

BH: There were a lot of fouls called, but we had more depth than Fort Hays. Their coach Bill Morse had his son Ron on the bench who never played, but he put him in towards the end of the game because they were running out of players. They missed a shot with four seconds left, but Ron ran over, got the ball, and made a shot at the buzzer as he was falling out of bounds. They ended up beating Dick Bennett's Wisconsin-Stevens Point team in the title game to win it all.

JT: You had a four-point overtime win over Westmont in the third place game. Was your team just exhausted from all the overtime games, and did you consider your run in the tourney to be a success or a failure?

BH: Whenever I go into the locker room at the end of a season, I do not do any ranting and raving. Once it is over, there is nothing you can do about the outcome, so I just try to end on a high note. There is only one team in the country that ends their season on a successful note, and I was proud of my team for going so far.

JT: In 1985 your program made the leap to Division I and you set a record for the most wins at a school in its first season of Division I competition with 16. What was the biggest difference between the two divisions, and how was your team able to be so competitive so quickly?

BH: I had two good guards in Brittman and Perry, and I felt they could hold their own with anyone in the country. I am 5'7" myself, so maybe I am partial to the little guys, but you cannot score if you cannot get the ball up the floor. When we were making the move to Division I, a lot of people said we would not be able to compete, but we proved them wrong.

JT: You also set an NCAA record for consecutive home victories with a 75-game win streak from 1981-1986. How big a home-court advantage was your crowd, and did it eventually reach a point where the fans expected you to win every single home game?

BH: We had good fan support, and they made a lot of noise. Everyone has more confidence at home.

JT: In 1987 you became coach at UIC, where you only had one 20-win season during your nine years there. Why did you make the switch, and do you have any regrets when you look back on your decision?

BH: I have no regrets whatsoever, as the UIC Pavilion was the nicest facility in Chicago. I have never stepped into a program that was highly successful: they were all challenges, which I enjoyed. I looked up at the bleachers during my first game at UIC as they were singing the national anthem, and I counted 97 people in the stands (half of whom were probably my family!). I was born too soon before the big money came, but back then when I signed a $50,000 contract, I thought I had won the Illinois lottery!

JT: For the past decade you have been athletic director/coach of the St. Xavier women's basketball team. Is it hard to do both gigs at the same time, and what is the biggest difference between coaching men and coaching women?

BH: I never thought I would be back at St. Xavier at all, much less coaching women. I like being AD, and I have a great staff that helps me out. The confidence factor is a big difference; the men think they are all Michael Jordan but the women all think they stink. The women are more intelligent; if they get a B in a class, they are disappointed that they did not get an A. I tell them that they cannot always get an A on the court; turning the ball over or missing a shot is just part of being a player. My friends thought that I could not get the women to play my up-tempo game, with a bunch of pressing and running, but I did. However, I cannot yell at them the way I did with the guys.

JT: You have spent your entire coaching career in the city of Chicago. What do you enjoy most about the city, and has it been easy on your family to not have to move around all over the country?

BH: I became a trivia question, as I coached at three different schools without having to move even once. Former coach Dick Versace said that my downfall is that I never moved around the country. However, when a coach moves to Texas and has a son start high school there, and then moves to Maryland and has a daughter start college there, it can be tough to be so spread out, so I put my family first. I heard someone complaining about me once on sports radio after I said that I was happy in Chicago and "did not have to go to Duke to be happy", but that is the truth.

JT: When people look back on your career, how do you want to be remembered the most?

BH: I would like to be remembered as a coach who really understood his players and was a good communicator. I loved winning, but I understood the difference between being an old coach and being a teenage player, which not all coaches can do. I was someone who my players could come talk to about any of their problems.

Hallberg is also on Jon's list of best coaches in Great West history (the league itself is going into its second year of official competition)

Chicago State: Bob Hallberg (1977-1987) 223-84

Houston Baptist: Gene Iba (1977-1985) 128-96, 1 NCAA tourney, 2 conference titles, 1-time conference COY

NJIT: NO COACH HAS BEEN THERE FOR 5 YEARS

North Dakota: Rich Glas (1988-2006) 335-194, three conference titles

South Dakota: Dave Boots (1988-present) 465-182, six-time conference Coach of the Year

Texas Pan American: Sam Williams (1958-1973) 244-164, one NAIA title, one-time national Coach of the Year

Utah Valley University: Dick Hunsaker (2004-present) 121-80

College Basketball: Week in Review

Rob Carpentier's "Seven Day Stretch" is a whirlwind tour around every corner of college basketball nation:

Seven Day Savior
(Team): Oklahoma

The Oklahoma Sooners have started the season 6-0 and
although four of those wins have been against inferior competition, two of the
wins have come against a very good Davidson team and a Purdue squad that will
be one of the favorites to win the Big 10 (despite the Duke loss). Star forward Blake Griffin is averaging 19.2…REBOUNDS per
game. That’s astonishing regardless of
whom the Sooners have played. Oh, by the
way, he’s scoring at a 25.7 per game clip.
Against Purdue, Griffin
“only” scored 18 points, but he hauled in 21 boards. It’s not just Griffin, though. Blake’s brother Taylor and super-frosh Willie Warren are both
scoring in double figures. It’s early,
but Jeff Capel is starting to look like the most successful Coach K protégé out
there. The Sooners have a couple of
tough contests this week, with USC coming to town for the Big 12/Pac 10 Harwood
Series and then having to travel to take on a tough Tulsa squad.
Win those two games and the Sooners will probably be a top five team.

Seven Day Savior
(Player): David Holston

Senior David Holston, Chicago State
Cougars. CSU hasn’t shocked anyone, but
they did play Marquette tough and beat Central Michigan.
This is big for a school that has no winning tradition whatsoever. The Cougars sit at 3-3 and although they
won’t get an NCAA bid, (they’re an independent after spending years in the Mid
Continent Conference), they are much better than in the past. The biggest reason why is the 5’8” Holston. He is second in Division 1 scoring at 25.7 PPG,
and even that doesn’t tell the whole story.
He has scored in the 30’s four times, including a 33 point effort at Marquette, and has
already attempted 70 three point shots.
The fact that he’s hitting on 4% of those shots helps, but he is also an
unselfish player, averaging almost 6 assists per game. He’ll have a couple more shots at getting on
the highlight shows this season as the Cougars still play at Illinois
and at Kansas State.

Game of the Week (The
one you DON’T know about): ASU vs Nebraska

Since there are no “big” mid-major conference games this
week, let’s look at one of the intersectional games between two BCS
schools. Arizona
State is supposed to be one of the
teams that should give UCLA a serious run for the Pac 10 crown, while Nebraska has started the
year at 5-0 including a big win against Creighton this past weekend. Both schools should be in the mix for a bid
to the Big Dance in March and winning this game will go a long way to getting
one of those programs to go “dancing”.
It will be an interesting match-up as Nebraska has relied very much on
its defense to start the season, (no team has scored more than 57 on the
Huskers this year), while ASU has one of the best individual offensive players
in the country in sophomore James Harden.
Both teams like to slow it down a bit and run very structured
offenses. While games like UNC/MSU may
get the bulk of the media coverage, its games like this that are often more
intriguing and more entertaining.

Seven Days Under the
Radar: Charleston

VMI defeated Kentucky in Lexington and Western Kentucky beat Louisville,
(but was crushed earlier by Murray State), but the team that really should be raising
eyebrows if you’ve been paying attention has been the College Of Charleston. They’ve started the year 5-1 and the one loss
was a squeaker at Temple, (who should be pretty
good this year), and they just defeated South
Carolina. With all due respect to Davidson head coach
Bob McKillop, the only current Southern Conference coach to get to a Final Four
is Charleston’s
Bobby Cremins. Granted, that was with
Georgia Tech, but Cremins knows what he is doing. The Cougars play the same pressure defense
that Cremins made famous during his days in Atlanta, and they rebound very well, (they
essentially played the Gamecocks to a draw on the boards). It’s a young team, (only two seniors), but
they play with a lot of confidence.
Sophomore guard Andrew Goudelock is the go-to guy for the Cougars. But he isn’t it; Charleston has five players at least 6’7”
tall, which is a lot for a mid-major program, and they are very athletic. Junior guard Tony White, Jr. is a defensive
wiz, utilizing his quickness to harass opposing guards. Perhaps most importantly, Charleston takes care of the ball. As a team, they average only 11.7 turnovers
per game. That means that Charleston doesn’t give
up big runs to opponents. Circle
December 29; Davidson comes to Charleston
in what may be the first of three meetings this season. If Charleston
wins, they won’t be under the radar anymore.

Seven Days on the Hot
Seat: Billy Gillispie

Billy Gillispie is in trouble. His Kentucky
team has rattled off five straight wins, including wins over Kansas State
and West Virginia. Those wins were just in time, too. That’s because the Wildcats lost at home to
VMI, (much like last season’s home loss to Gardner-Webb), and then got hammered
at North Carolina 77-58, a score line that was in now way indicative of how
thorough the beating was that Kentucky
took. The natives are restless in Lexington and Gillispie
will need a big season from here on out to defuse the perception that he is
vastly underachieving. Gillispie’s
offense has been suspect and he has yet to fully get his players to completely
buy into his defensive concepts. The
Cats still get Miami (Fla.), and Louisville out of conference so
the sour taste of the VMI loss still can be purged, but Heaven forbid that
Kentucky losses to Indiana…then Gillispie’s backside will really get warm.

Seven Days of Head
Scratching: Kelvin Sampson

The NCAA finally came down with its ruling in the
investigation of Kelvin Sampson and Indiana.
Sampson, by all accounts, was justifiably hammered. He essentially won’t be able to coach in the
college ranks for the next 5 years as he has been placed on a show-cause
restriction, meaning that any college that wants to hire him has to show cause
as to why. Okay, I think most people
feel that’s a justified penalty, (one of the harshest that the NCAA can levy
against an individual), as Sampson, basically, was stupid. I want even get into the “slime” factor. The head scratcher, though, is the fact that Indiana got off with
three years of probation. No post-season ban, no loss of television. Normally this would be fine as Sampson was
the real culprit here, as well as members of his staff. But it was shown that Indiana had some knowledge of his wrongdoing
and didn’t jump to correct it. That’s an
oversight issue and schools have been trashed by the NCAA for doing that. In short, the NCAA, once again, has shown no
consistency in determining penalties for institutions. The fact that colleges and universities haven’t
moved to form their own governing body is a head scratcher as most schools know
that the NCA A is one of the most arbitrary bodies in existence.

Was the

        David Holston - Chicago State

The

        Despite the loss, Lofton
deserves respect for breaking the SEC's All-Time 3-pointer mark (367)

set a new high with 26 points

Daily Dribble: Independent Update

Last night, Central Arkansas upset potential NCAA Tournament team Bucknell by the final score of 50-48. The Bears (that's Central Arkansas) are a first-time D1 squad that has only beaten one other D1 team this year (Bowling Green.) Central isn't actually an independent because they're playing a full Southland Conference schedule.. but in honor of their win I thought I'd take a look at how the independents and recent ones are doing this year.

Like Central Arkansas, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is playing a full Southland schedule for the first time. The Islanders have been one of the best independent teams over the last couple years, and are considered to be a Southland contender in just their first season. Things have gone well for TAMU-CC, with a 7-4 record overall (5-4 against D1 teams). Their best two wins are at Detroit and South Florida. Like most independents or low-majors, TAMU-CC still has to play most non-conference games on the road.. but they have a rare 3-game home streak coming up, including a big game against Kent State. TAMU-CC is one of the most experienced teams in the country.. with 7 seniors that play at least 15 minutes per game, and all of whom scored 5+ ppg. This experience should put them right in the thick of the Southland title race along with SELU, Sam Houston St, and NW State..

Replacing TAMU-CC as the best independent is clearly North Dakota State, who has an impressive 8-4 record. Unlike the Islanders, the NDSU Bison are extremely young with just one player on their roster whose not a freshman or sophomore. Last year, NDSU got headlines for beating Wisconsin.. and they did it again this year with a big win at a ranked Marquette team. Perhaps more impressive than their 8 wins is the nature of their losses. They have an 85-81 loss at Big 12 Texas Tech, an 83-81 loss against Big 12 Kansas State, and a 82-80 loss at 9-2 Colorado State. The Bison have another chance at the Big 12 as they head to Iowa State on Sunday(this is a definite upset alert game).. and then head to Eastern Michigan before finishing the season against all the other independents. With 16 games left, NDSU has a great chance at making a run at the 20-win mark.

South Dakota State hasn't done quite as good of a job representing the Dakotas, though the Jackrabbits do have 4 wins against D1 teams and one of the best mascots in the country. Another young team (just 2 seniors on the roster), the Jackrabbits have won 2 straight including a road win at UMKC.

Both SDSU and NDSU will be joining UMKC in the Mid-Contintent conference in 2007 along with IPFW. IPFW (ie, Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne) is just 4-9 and two of those wins were against non-D1ers. The key for the Mid-Con in getting IPFW is their mascot, the Mastadons. It appears the Mid-Con is stockpiling good nicknames like the Mastadons, Jackrabbits, Kangaroos (UMKC), Leathernecks (Western Illinois), and the Gentlemen of Centenary.

Unlike the above schools that are joining the Mid-Con, Chicago State is playing an independent schedule after leaving that conference. The Cougars have just a 5-11 record, but thats understandable considering they've played 14 of 16 games on the road. Their biggest win was easily at 7-6 UTEP.. in which Chicago State's little backcourt combined for 44 points. Royce Parran and David Holston are just 5-8 and 5-9 respectively and are generally listed at weighing 160 pounds. Its safe to say Chicago State would dominate the biddy basketball circuit..

The indy team with the 2nd best record is 8-5 Texas-Pan American. UTPA is led by a JUCO transfer, Brian Burrell averaging almost 18 a game. The Broncs have won 3 straight, including most recently at James Madison of the CAA.

Some other independent notes that stick out.. Utah Valley State is 7-5 and most recently beat a Southern Utah team that is 9-5. The Wolverines almost had a huge win against Utah State, falling by just 4 against a team that has an outside chance of making the Big Dance.

Savannah State is this year's feel good story with a 6-11 record. Two years ago, the Tigers went 0-28 and last year they won just 1 game against a D1 team. Savannah shocked the world by starting 5-0 this year (though 3 were against non-D1 teams).. though they've come back to Earth having lost 11 of 12. The most recent win was at Bethune-Cookman.. an actual D1 team.. though one of, if not, the worst one in America. Bethune has yet to beat a D1 squad this year. Still, 6 wins is still 6 wins for this program.

This year's Savannah State is Winston-Salem, off to a dismal 1-16 start.. including 0-16 against D1 teams. The Rams are a provisional team and have the unfortunate burden of playing 22 road games this year.. almost all of which will end up as losses. In fact, the Rams have only come within 10 points once all season against a D1 team, losing by 7 at Georgia State. Perhaps their only a chance for a win is on January 27th when they head to Bethune-Cookman.

Of course there's also UC-Davis who has yet to beat a D1 team.. and NJIT who shocked the Northeast by beating Manhattan and Rider to start the season before losing 10 straight. Also there's 5-10 Longwood, who most recently beat Kennesaw State last night (making the jump to the A-Sun from the indy ranks) and who hosts American later today.

- Don't forget to Dribble in the New Year -
