SEC Basketball: 5-Year Ranking

As part of our 5-Year Ranking series, here's how the SEC teams stack up according to conference wins. Unlike most leagues, there hasn't been one dominant team over the last handful of years. Florida and Kentucky have had some great years, but also some very mediocre ones mixed in. At the bottom of the league, LSU and South Carolina are close to forming a bottom rung of their own.

First Tier

1 - Kentucky - 53 wins - Freshman U will battle with Florida for the league title

2 - Tennessee - 53 - The Vols seems destined to fall out of the lead pack, but Martin was a good hire

3 - Florida - 52 - Only a few years removed from their national championship era

Second Tier

4 - Vanderbilt - 49 - Haven't won a tourney game since 2007. Will they live up to this year's hype?

5 - Mississippi St - 47 - Have held steady at 9-7 over the last 3 seasons

Wannabees

6 - Ole Miss - 38 - Rebels basketball exemplifies mediocrity. Never awful, never good

7 - Alabama - 37 - Have been competitive in league play, but no tourney trips in this period

Also-Rans

8 - Arkansas - 32 - With a good recruiting class and a new coach, Hogs are back on track

9 - Auburn - 31 - Auburn still seems no closer to breaking out of this bottom pack

10 - South Carolina - 30 - These are bleak years for the Gamecocks, and it might get worse

11 - Georgia - 29 - After last year's tourney bid, its clear Georgia is on the move

12 - LSU - 29 - The tournament trip in 2009 seems like a distant memory at this point

Pac-12 Basketball: 5-Year Ranking

As part of our 5-Year Ranking series, here's how the Pac-12 teams stack up according to conference wins. With the exception of Oregon St, every team in the league has had at least two .500 seasons or better in the last five years. The league adds Utah, who was a mid-level MWC team, and Colorado, who was in the bottom rung of the Big 12.

First Tier

1 - UCLA - 65 wins - This is a lot of wins for a program that seems to be a mess right now

2 - Arizona - 52 - While much of the Pac-12 is struggling, Sean Miller seems to building for the future

3 - Washington - 51 - Huskies have the most wins in the league over the last 3 seasons

Second Tier

4 - USC - 49 - For better or worse, have settled into a .500 team for the last 3 years

5 - Washington St - 47 - Propped up by 07-08 success, WSU is on the downturn

6 - California - 46 - Mike Montgomery has the Bears climbing the Pac-12 ladder

Wannabees

7 - Stanford - 43 - Ho hum sums up the state of Stanford basketball

8 - Arizona St - 38 - Devils have been up and down under Sendek. This seems like a down year

9 - Oregon - 36 - It's been a miserable few seasons for Oregon, but I have faith in Altman

Also-Rans

10 - Oregon St - 23 - The league doormat has NIT potential this year, which would be a positive step

Big Ten Basketball: 5-Year Ranking

As part of our 5-Year Ranking series, here's how the Big Ten teams stack up according to conference wins. The makeup of the Big Ten is quite different from most of the other power-conferences. The also-rans in the Big Ten have fared much better than other league also-rans, while the middle teams are much more mediocre. With one or two surprises, the final league standings will probably look pretty similar to the 5-year standings.

First Tier

1t - Ohio St - 65 wins - Neck and neck with Wiscy, thought it seems like OSU gets all the hype

1t - Wisconsin - 65 - Constantly overachieve in Big Ten play, but rarely surprise in NCAA's

3 - Purdue - 63 - For all these wins, Purdue hasn't advanced past the Sweet Sixteen

4 - Michigan St - 58 - For first time in a long time, Michigan St is officially in a rut

Second Tier

5 - Illinois - 44 - Fans have higher expectations than such mediocrity

Wannabees

6 - Michigan - 36 - It seems like slowly but surely, Michigan is headed in right direction

7 - Minnesota - 35 - Gophers yet to win a tourney game under Tubby Smith

8 - Indiana - 32 - 2007-08 seasons make this number look a lot healthier than reality

Also-Rans

9 - Penn St - 30 - Have been a 2nd class citizen for some time, but never completely dormant

10 - Iowa - 28 - No postseason trips in this 5-year stretch

11 - Northwestern - 25 - Have been competitive the last three seasons, but still not over NCAA hump

*The Big Ten adds Nebraska, who won 30 games in Big 12

Big East Basketball: 5-Year Ranking

As part of our 5-Year Ranking series, here's how the Big East teams stack up according to conference wins. There's a huge gap between the upper half of the Big East and the bottom 7 teams, but both Cincinnati and St. John's seem like they'll be closing ground over the next few years.

First Tier

1t - Pittsburgh - 65 - Eventually the committee will tire of giving Pitt a #1 seed

1t - Louisville - 65 - Lack of tournament success overshadows solid regular-season play

3t - Notre Dame - 57 - Mike Brey's teams tend to overachieve in conference play

3t - Syracuse - 57 - After a rough spell in 07-08, Orange basketball is relevant again

Second Tier

5 - Georgetown - 55 - No tourney wins since 2008, and little hope of one this year

6 - West Virginia - 54 - A lot of new faces, but hard not to have faith in a Huggins team

7 - Marquette - 53 - Six tourney trips in a row for steady, but unspectacular program

8 - Villanova - 51 - Did Jay Wright's program peak in 2009?
9 - UCONN - 50 - Last year's National Title came out of nowhere (16-20 in Big East games last two years)

Wannabees

10t - Cincinnati - 36 - Coming off of first NCAA trip since 2005

10t - St. John's - 36 - After last season's success, Johnnies starting anew

12 - Seton Hall - 34 - It will take more than quality recruiting to change program's negative vibes
13 - Providence - 32 - Once proud program trying to find some semblance of direction

Also-Rans

14 - South Florida - 22 - Many might be surprised that South Florida is not farther down the list

15 - Rutgers - 18 - Mike Rice has a lot of work to do, but there seems to be a glimmer of hope
16 - DePaul - 17 wins - Nowhere to go but up for putrid Blue Demons

Big 12 Basketball: 5-Year Ranking

Here's how the Big 12 teams stack up over the last five years according to conference wins. There are substantial gaps (at least 6 wins) between tiers. With the change in conference membership, and certain programs in flux, the next 5 years of Big 12 basketball could be much more fluid.

First Tier

1 - Kansas - 70 - Jayhawks have dominated their league like no other team
2 - Texas - 57 - Only one Elite 8 trip in the last five years

Second Tier

3 - Texas A&M - 51 - Could potentially pass Texas with a big season
4 - Kansas State - 50 - 5 winning years in a row for a once dormant program
5 - Missouri - 46 - Replacing Mike Anderson with Frank Haith won't help the cause

Wannabees

6 - Oklahoma St - 40 - Travis Ford trying to provide direction to directionless program
7 - Oklahoma - 37 - Once proud program in disarray. Kruger will need to work magic
8 - Baylor - 36 - A lot of hype in Waco this year, but far from a sure thing

Also-Rans

9 - Texas Tech - 28 - Might have to get even worse this year before they get better
10t - Iowa St - 21 wins - Nowhere to go but up for lowly Cyclones

Nebraska - 33 - Huskers basketball might be slightly better than Big Ten fans expect
Colorado - 21 - The Buffs had finally started to turn the corner before bolting leagues

ACC Basketball: 5-Year Ranking

Here's how the ACC teams stack up over the last five years according to conference wins. Unlike many leagues, the ACC has a relatively strict caste system, with Duke and UNC firmly at the top. Tony Bennett's Virginia Cavaliers are one of the few teams with a chance to jump up a level, while Wake Forest is clearly going in the wrong direction.

First Tier

1 - Duke - 58 - Steady as she goes for Coach K. Expect the same this year.
2 - UNC - 57 - Could surpass Duke if they runaway with the ACC title

Second Tier

3t - Florida St - 45 - Should once again finish 3rd or 4th in the league
3t - Maryland - 45 - Gary Williams' tenure ended in steady if not spectacular fashion
3t - Virginia Tech - 45 - And yet they haven't made the NCAA's since 2007
6 - Clemson - 44 - Could potentially go 9-7 for 4th year in a row

Wannabees

7- Boston College - 38 wins - Steve Donahue would love a 7th place finish this year
8 - Wake Forest - 37 - Just one conference win last year doesn't help the cause

9 - Virginia - 32 - Have a chance to move up a tier with a big season
10 - Georgia Tech - 29 - Remember when Georgia Tech was a relevant program?
11 - Miami - 29 - Amazing Missouri went after Frank Haith

ACC Basketball: 5-Year Ranking

ACC 5-YEAR STANDINGS

CHN's annual 5-year ranking answers a simple question is in a simple manner: How do ACC teams stack up over the last five years?

Teams get points for league wins, making the postseason (NIT or NCAA) and winning games in the Big Dance. NIT wins are meaningless here, as are non-conference wins. Also, league tournaments wins are not taken into account. (An original trial-scoring system included points for conference tourney wins. But the flukish nature of these tourney's did more harm than hurt: ie, 2008 Georgia, 2006 Syracuse, and 2004 Maryland ended up getting too much credit despite the reality that they were mediocre to sub-par teams.)

100 total points is set up to be the equivalent of batting .300 in baseball.. anything above and beyond is all-world stuff. 50 points is mediocre and you only start to get bad below 40 points.
