Wright Falls to 0-3 Against Miami

DAYTON - In
the past two years the Miami-Wright State games have been decided by a total of
two points resulting in two Raider wins.
This year the anticipated tight game never materialized as Miami's
defense frustrated Wright State to win 55-37 in front of 5517 fans.

Wright
State's defense was good holding Miami to just 37.5 (18-48) from the field, but
Miami's defense was incredible locking down the Raiders to 26.5 just percent
(13-49) from the field.

"This is the best we have played all
year. Collectively this was our best
team effort, we had good team defense," said a relieved Miami coach Charlie
Coles. "It helped us tonight that they
are not shooting the ball the way they want to.
I think it will come, it just wasn't there tonight."

Wright State
(0-3) has been out-shot and out-rebounded in all three of their losses. They are a team that has lost their
confidence and aggressiveness on offense

Wright State
coach Brad Brownell is still looking for the right combination of post players after
graduating last year's two post players. "We were thoroughly outplayed in all
facets of the game. They guarded us
well, they made more plays than us tonight," explained Brownell. "We were thoroughly outplayed in all facets
of the game. Miami did a good job of
defending us and when we did get an open look we didn't make it."

The game
started with Miami's Michael Bramos hitting a 3-pointer which started Miami on
a roll that held until Wright State's John David Gardner hit a foul shot to put
the Raiders up by one at 13-12.

Miami (2-2) quickly
went on a 13-3 run to close out the half up 25-16.

Coming out
in the second half Wright State's Ronnie Thomas hit a jumper to close the
deficit to seven points at 25-18 and that is as close as the Raiders got in the
second half.

The Miami
coaches told their team that they had to out-hustle the Raiders this year and
not let it come down to the last shot for a third year in a row.

Coles said,
"Last year we got the lead and we just stopped playing offense. This year we wanted to make sure, I told the
teams forget about the win or loss, just play harder than they play. Last year they beat us to all kind of loose
balls."

Kenny Hayes echoed his coach, "Our main goal
was to out-hustle them, we didn't want it to come down to the last shot "

Hayes led
all scorers with 20 points and Bramos had 19 points.

Miami
out-rebounded the Raiders 42-26.

Game notes:

-Coles
reached 300 wins when Miami beat Weber
State 70-66 on Wednesday. In his 19th
year as head coach, he owns a 301-241 record.
Coles is 209-157 at Miami and is nine wins away from breaking the
all-time wins mark. He needs just 12 MAC
wins to break the all-time career record.

-The Miami
Connection....all four RedHawk coaches
hold degrees from Miami. I will spare
you listing each degree and the year they graduated.

-In addition
to area rivals Wright State and Xavier, Miami also will head over to University
of Dayton on January 6th.

-The next
game for Miami is on Saturday at Xavier at 4:30 p.m.

-Next up for
Wright State is Saturday at Sam Houston State at 8 p.m.

College Football: #23 Miami @ Georgia Tech Preview

Four games are on the schedule before Saturday, with the big one being an ACC Coastal showdown between #23 Miami (7-3, 4-2) and Georgia Tech (7-3, 4-3). The Hurricanes, currently in the driver's seat in the division, need a win to keep that status since North Carolina lurks just one game behind in the standings. And with the Heels due to take on NC State and Duke to end the season, a loss here could essentially hand the division to a Carolina team that has already defeated Miami and Georgia Tech. The young Hurricanes will have their hands full dealing with one of the ACC's best defenses, led by possible firt-round draft pick DE Michael Johnson.

Not to mention an option attack that once you focus too much on the ground game of QB Josh Nesbitt and RB Jonathan Dwyer, a big play through the air comes by way of WR Demaryius Thomas. How much have the young Hurricane quarterbacks (Robert Marve and Jacory Harris) progressed throughout the season? We'll learn here, but given the crazy nature of the ACC it would be fitting if the Yellow Jackets won this game at home.

Friday's Games

6:00 PM ET Buffalo at Bowling Green

The MAC East is on the line in this one, with Turner Gill's Bulls one win away from clinching the division. A wild overtime win at Akron last week put Buffalo (6-4, 4-2) in this position, but they're going to be tested on the road in this one. QB Tyler Sheehan has played better football of late, helping lead the Falcons (5-5, 3-3) to wins over Kent State and Ohio. There's an equally capable quarterback on the other side of the field in Drew Willy, a major reason for Buffalo's recent turnaround. It'll come down to what the two defenses can do in this one, and with the Bulls leading the MAC in turnover margin they'll win a close one. Expect the phone of Coach Gill's agent to be ringing this offseason.

7:07 PM ET Miami (OH) at Toledo

The Redhawks (2-8, 1-5 MAC East) were expected to contend in the MAC East but they, like Toledo (2-8, 1-5 MAC West), are now playing out the string. This is also the final home game of the Tom Amstutz era, with "Toledo Tom" stepping down to take a fundraising position within the athletics department at season's end. His player surely want to send him out with a win, and they should do just that in a wild affair.

9:30 PM ET Fresno State at San Jose State on ESPN2

The Bulldogs (6-4, 3-3) haven't met expectations this season, currently sitting in sixth place in the WAC and in desperate need of a victory to guarantee themselves somewhere to go come bowl season. But they visit one of the WAC's best defenses in San Jose State (6-5, 4-3), which has found a way to win six games despite having one of the nation's worst offenses. Fresno State has better talent across the board, but I don't think they're admitting how much that early-season loss to Wisconsin took out of them. The Spartans win a close one, and keep an eye on their NFL-ready corners in Coye Francies and Christopher Owens.

-Will Muschamp designated "head coach in waiting" at Texas.

For all the talk about who could fill openings at Tennessee and Clemson, one man's name can now be taken off of that list. Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp has been designated head coach in waiting at the school, meaning that whenever Mack Brown decides to retire the job is his. This development, which has happened in college basketball in recent years, has even caught the attention of Virginia Tech athletics director Jim Weaver. With their defensive coordinator, Bud Foster, having interviewed at Clemson there is obviously some incentive to keeping him in Blacksburg besides the fact that he's an excellent football coach. This is an interesting development to keep an eye on this offseason in regards to possible head coaching openings.

Miami Welcomes 5-Man Recruiting Class

OXFORD, Ohio- Miami University's men's basketball team received five national letters-of-intent during the November signing period, head coach Charlie Coles announced Thursday. Joining the RedHawks next season will be 6-foot-7, 215-pound forward/guard Mark Anderson (Dayton, Ohio/Dunbar/Sinclair C.C.), 6-foot-7, 250-pound forward Drew Kelly (Franklin, Tenn./Centennial), 6-foot-11, 220-pound center Drew McGhee (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North Ridgeville), 6-foot-3, 205-pound guard Allen Roberts (Middletown, Ohio/Middletown) and 6-foot-4, 180-pound guard Orlando Williams (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton).

"This is a very good recruiting class," said Coles. "We were able to bring in guys at every position. I think each one of these guys has a chance to come in and be able to contribute right away, which is what you look for when you're bringing guys into your program."

Anderson is an NJCAA Division II Preseason First-Team All-America selection. As a freshman at Sinclair, he was tabbed the OCCAC Player of the Year, earning All-Region Tournament Team honors and garnering Second-Team NJCAA All-America distinction. His 25.6 ppg average led NJCAA II, while his 9.3 rebounds per game ranked 30th. He helped the team to a 24-6 record, an OCCAC regular-season title and an NJCAA II District 7 runner-up finish. During his high school career, Anderson averaged 14.0 ppg, 8.0 rpg, 4.0 bpg at Dunbar High School. He helped the Wolverines to a 26-2 record, a Division II state title and No. 1 state ranking as a senior. He was a first-team all-area selection as a senior and also earned all-city recognition.

Kelly is the all-time leading scorer at Centennial High School. He earned all-state honors and was an all-mid-state selection as a junior. Kelly was named district MVP in 2007-08 and shared district MVP honors the previous season. He is a three-time first-team all- district and all-region selection. Last season, he averaged 26.0 ppg, 11.0 rpg and 6.0 bpk and is on pace to eclipse 2,000 career points. He has led Centennial to a pair of 20-win seasons, including a 27-6 record in 2007-08, and a pair of region semifinal appearances. A candidate for Tennessee Mr. Basketball this season, Kelly his a four-year letterwinner and four-time captain of the basketball team and also has earned three letters in football and one in track and field. McGhee was tabbed the WSC Player of the Year as a junior and also earned Morning Journal Player of the Year honors in 2007-08. He averaged 16.0 ppg, 12.0 rpg and 6.0 bpg for the Rangers as a junior, while helping North Ridgeville to a WSC Conference title.

McGhee is a two-time all-conference selection as well as a two-time all-county honoree. He is a three-year letterwinner for North Ridgeville, serving as team captain three seasons.

Roberts is an all-state selection and is a two-time first-team all-GMC selection. Last season, he also earned District 15 all-Underclassman First-Team distinction and was an all-Southwest pick. As a junior, Roberts averaged 15.8 ppg, 4.7 rpg and 3.2 apg while shooting 43.5 percent from the field and 43.4 percent from 3-point range. As a sophomore, Roberts averaged 15.0 ppg and 4.0 rpg while shooting 49.7 percent from the field and set Middletown's single-season record for free-throw percentage (.863). He is a three-year letterwinner for Middletown, serving as team captain for two seasons. He also has earned three letters in football (captain for two seasons) and two letters in track (captain for one season).

Williams earned honorable mention all-state recognition as a junior. He led Princeton High School to GMC and sectional titles in 2007-08. Williams, who averaged 12.6 ppg for the Vikings as a junior, was a first-team all-GMC selection in 2007-08. He is a four-year letterwinner for Princeton High School, serving as team captain for one season.

"With six seniors on our current roster, it was important to have a good recruiting class. Our assistant coaches deserve all the credit in assembling this incoming class," added Coles. "They did a wonderful job to be able to sell this program with the question marks that were surrounding me at the time. They just did a tremendous job. It was among one of the all-time greatest recruiting efforts, and we are so thrilled to have these five joining the Miami University men's basketball program."

GameNight: Miami (OH) vs Weber State

Start: Nov 12 2008 - 7:15pm

The 2k Sports Classic Benefitting Coaches vs Cancer
Tournament tipped-off Tuesday and continues Wednesday. Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles will serve as
a host location out West for the four-team ‘pod' where Miami will tip-off
against Weber State followed by UCLA versus Prairie View A&M. Miami is a veteran team to watch this
season in the MAC. The RedHawks have a
proven star performer in senior swingman Michael Bramos, who scored 16 ppg last
season and should excel to greater heights this season with Miami set to run a
quicker, more up-tempo game. Bramos
developed his game even more over the summer while also leading a group of
American players with Greek heritage in scoring with 25 ppg during a 10-day,
4-game trip to Greece to play some pro teams and a junior national team. Miami returns seven players with starting
experience including senior guard Kenny Hayes (12 ppg), who is very good off
the dribble and will take over the primary point guard duties this season after
splitting time at both guard spots last year.
The RedHawks are deep at guard with 4-5 players ready to contribute
including hot-shot freshman guard Kramer Soderberg, the Gatorade
Player-of-the-Year and St. Louis Post-Dispatch POY in Missouri last season.

Weber
State comes off a 16-14 season and a third place finish in the Big Sky
Conference. You may recall that the
Wildcats were a NCAA Tournament team two years ago in head coach Randy Rahe's
first season at the helm. He earned Big
Sky Coach-of-the-Year honors when he guided the Wildcats to a 20-win season his
first year after Weber State went 10-17 the season before his arrival. Not quite as much optimism in Ogden, Utah
this season as Weber State lost their top two all-conference performers and has
no returning scorer that averaged double-digits last season. A potential step back this season with seven
newcomers joining the Wildcats roster and some pressed into early action along
with redshirt freshman Kyle Bullinger, a 6-6 forward who should emerge as a
solid scorer and player after missing much of last year with an early season
injury. Weber State makes their second
appearance in this tournament hosted by UCLA and Bruins coach Ben Howland, a
former Weber State standout. The
Wildcats enter off a home exhibition game victory Saturday against the
University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, who run a frenetic, fast-paced
attack. No surprise if Weber State and
Miami play an up-tempo pace Wednesday night.

Much
optimism for Miami following a 17-16 season and appearance in the first
ever College Basketball Invitational (CBI) postseason tournament. The RedHawks will get plenty of support
from their fans, followers, media and backers, and they have the
personnel and a top coach in Charlie Coles. They return as the MAC's top scoring defense last year, but should be able to extend leads with a more
up-tempo style this season. Miami head
coach Charlie Coles ‘shoots' for his 300th career win in opening
night action at Pauley Pavilion, and look for the RedHawks to deliver with a
solid opening night performance.

College Football: #14 Ball State @ Miami (Ohio) Preview

Another week another set of midweek games from the MAC, with the first featuring an undefeated Ball State team looking to work its way into the BCS. But with games remaining against Central Michigan and Western Michigan the Cardinals will have a hard enough time winning the MAC West let alone going undefeated. But tonight brings a trip to Oxford to take on the Redhawks of Miami (OH), who find themselves in the middle of a heated battle for the MAC East. Every team in the division has at least two conference losses, which could make for a serious mismatch (on paper) when the two divisional champs meet on December 5th. The game matching two of the preseason favorites can be seen at 7 PM EST on ESPN2, and look for QB Nate Davis to lead Ball State to a routine road victory.

Wednesday's Games

-Temple @ Kent State 8 PM EST on ESPN360

The Owls find themselves one game out of first place in the MAC East despite having the conference's worst offense. Kent State hasn't been much better, but with four league losses the Golden Flashes still can entertain thoughts of winning the division. Unless Akron, Buffalo or Bowling Green wins the division, there's a strong chance that the East representative could be either playing for bowl eligibility or looking to win the conference even though they wouldn't be bowl eligible. As for this game, look for the Golden Flashes to win at home and further muddle the divisional race.

- Central Michigan @ Northern Illinois 8 PM EST on ESPN2

A showdown in the west that is essentially an elimination game for Jerry Kill's Huskies. Thanks to their loss to Ball State NIU would need a lot of help to win the division, but given the status of the East they could very well be playing for a bowl game in this one. Central Michigan, on the other hand, hasn't missed a beat with Brian Brunner playing quarterback for the injured Dan LeFevour. LeFevour could be back for this one, but there shouldn't be much concern if he isn't. Northern Illinois has the best defense in the MAC, but this two-game stretch (Ball State and then CMU) can kill those numbers in a hurry. NIU will be competitive, but look for the Chippewas to take care of business and set up a showdown next week with Ball State.

FWAA Awards for this week:

- Iowa was named FWAA/Tostitos Fiesta Bowl National Team of the Week thanks to their 24-23 home win over then-#3 Penn State. Other nominees were #2 Texas Tech (56-20 win over Oklahoma State) and #8 Utah (13-10 win over TCU).

- Alabama safety Rashad Johnson was named FWAA/Bronko Nagurski Defensive Player of the Week due to his performance at LSU on Saturday. Johnson had three interceptions (one for a TD) along with four tackles and one-half sack in the Crimson Tide's 27-21 overtime win in Baton Rouge.

College Football: Miami (Ohio) @ Buffalo Preview

I'm not going to even get into my opinion as to teams playing on Election Day (I sure hope the Miami (Ohio) and Buffalo players get to the polls), but there is football to be played on both Tuesday and Wednesday with all three games being MAC matchups. Could Ball State be a possible upset victim on Wednesday night? Who will take control of a muddled MAC East race after these two days? Here's a preview of the three games on the slate for Tuesday and Wednesday night.

Tuesday: Miami-Ohio (2-6, 1-3) @ Buffalo (4-4, 2-2) 7:30 PM EST on ESPN2

The Bulls are currently tied with Akron atop the MAC East standings, with the Redhawks just a game back in the standings. The division race has been every bit as wild as what's been going on in the ACC but without the same amount of national television coverage. But in QB Drew Willy the Bulls have one of the better signal-callers in the MAC. Miami will most certainly have their hands full with Buffalo, especially when you take into consideration the following two statistical rankings: Miami is tied for last in turnover margin and twelfth in total offense. Yes the Redhawks are second in the conference in total defense, but the fact that their offense struggles to put points on the board will cost them in this one. Buffalo wins and gives a little clarity to the East race.

Wednesday's Games

Northern Illinois @ #17 Ball State 8 PM EST on ESPN2

The race in the MAC West is wide-open in regards to the top four in the division, but thankfully for the conference those four teams are with either zero or one league loss. An NIU win in Muncie would throw the race for a loop and eliminate any small, correction miniscule, chance that the Cardinals would have to crash the BCS party. QB Nate Davis is arguably the best quarterback in the conference, but he'll have his hands full with the league's top-ranked defense. And if Brady Hoke isn't the unanimous choice for MAC Coach of the Year then don't be surprised if one of those votes went to Northern Illinois' Jerry Kill, who has the Huskies one win away from bowl eligibilty in his first year in DeKalb. But they don't get that sixth win here, for the Cardinals have too much offensive firepower to drop this one at home.

Toledo (2-6, 1-3) @ Akron (4-4, 2-2) 8 PM EST on ESPNU

It's been a tough year for the Rockets, who announced today that head coach Tom Amstutz would step down at season's end and take on a fundraising role within the athletic department. The problems for Toledo have been on offense, with the conference's eleventh-ranked attack struggling to establish a consistent passing game and failing to hold onto the football (11th in turnover margin). The Zips, on the other hand, find themselves tied with Buffalo atop the MAC East due to a ranking of third in the MAC in turnover margin and fifth in total offense. But the Rockets do have a shot at putting some points on the board due to Akron being one of the poorer defenses in the MAC (12th in total defense). So even though the Rockets would like to win one for their soon-to-be departed head coach, look for the Zips to pull out a close one.

- Phil Fulmer steps down at Tennessee.

Unless you've been away from a computer, radio or television all day then you know that Tennessee head coach Phil Fulmer will be stepping down come season's end. The main culprits in this: the eleventh-ranked offense in the SEC and recent struggles to beat rivals Alabama, Florida and Georgia. Add to this a decline in the quality of recent recruiting classes and you have all the makings for a departure. Fulmer is currently 150-51 at Tennessee and won a national title back in 1998. The Volunteers (3-6, 1-5) need to win out to reach bowl eligibility this season and host equally struggling Wyoming on Saturday.

-Texas Tech named FWAA/Tostitos Fiesta Bowl National Team of the Week.

Thanks to their exciting 39-33 home win over then-#1 Texas the Red Raiders were named National Team of the Week by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) and Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. Other nominees were Florida (49-10 win over Georgia) and Northwestern (24-17 win over Minnesota clinched with an interception return for a touchdown with 12 seconds remaining).
