Jon Teitel's "Coaching Greats" Series: Northern Arizona's Mike Adras

In the latest installment in his "Coaching Greats" interview series, CHN writer Jon Teitel caught up with current Northern Arizona head coach Mike Adras. During his time in Flagstaff, Adras has led the Lumberjacks to a pair of conference titles and an NCAA Tournament appearance.

Jon Teitel: You were an assistant at Northern Arizona under Coach Ben Howland. What made Howland such a great coach, and what was the most important lesson you learned from him?

Mike Adras: I actually started there as an assistant before Ben even got the job, but stayed on due to our previous coaching relationship at UCSB. His mentality is to grind until the job gets done, and I am built the same way. His attention to detail and not settling were the most significant things I learned from him.

JT: In 2000 you won the conference tournament title with a four-point OT win over CSUN after Markus Carr missed a jumper at the end of regulation. How close did you come to losing that game, and how amazing was Ross Land's 70-foot shot right before halftime?

MA: I remember Land's shot being the play of the day. It was even seen by people overseas. I was content to go into the locker room with a double-digit lead at the half, but Ross decided "why not". He shot it from right in front of our bench, and I swear that I knew it was going in as soon as it left his hand! We ended up needing it due to the game going into overtime, but all of our games against CSUN were close. I always felt that we were in control even though we almost lost the game.

JT: You made the NCAA Tournament in your first year as head coach. How were you able to come in and have so much success so quickly?

MA: We had a nice nucleus of returning players and brought in a couple of new guys as well. Even though it was a transitional year, the disappointment of not making it the previous year was a great motivator. They were not going to settle for anything less than the tourney and we had a lot of fun.

JT: In the 2000 NCAA Tournament you had a five-point loss to #2-seed St. John's in Tucson after leading with 30 seconds to go. How devastating was that loss, and what was the feeling like in your locker room afterwards?

MA: The story I tell is that when I meet the dear Lord, I will need 30 seconds of my life back because we did not get it right the first time! We were actually up with 15 seconds left and had a timeout so I thought we were in good shape, but the plan to foul them did not work out as we would have like. Ross fouled Lavor Postell, who made a shot and free throw for the game-clinching three-point play. It was a great thrill. Some people in Tucson said it was the loudest they have heard the arena in years. We were so close to winning it that afterward I just thanked my guys for a great ride and great journey. There is not much else you can say; sometimes it is just not meant to be but it was still a terrific season with guys who played their hearts out. Dan McClintock ended up getting drafted in the second round because of how he played in that game.

JT: In 2006 you were named conference Coach of the Year after winning the school's first regular-season title in almost a decade. What did it mean to you to win such an outstanding individual honor?

MA: Anytime you are recognized by your peers it is personally gratifying, but to be honest what the guys accomplish on the court means more to me, and even more what they accomplish in the future. We deserved to win the league that year and we were able to do so.

JT: You have coached some of the top three-point shooters in NCAA history. What is the meaning of your "Recruit to Shoot" theme, and who was the best long-range shooter you ever coached?

MA: When you look at the NAU record book, I coached a lot of guys who could shoot the ball. The key is to get them shots during the game because the defense knows in advance that they can shoot. Kelly Golob became our all-time leading scorer but he has a shot that I do not think I could even teach anyone else. He is one of the brightest human beings I have ever met and he taught himself how to do a lot of things. If I have to pick one guy, I would go with Ross because of his 3PT%. However, if we had a contest, Steve Sir just might win it because he can shoot from a farther range than the other two. Whenever any of those three shot the ball I always thought it was going in. Steve was only here for 2½ years, otherwise he might have put a bigger dent in the record book. They are all about 6'4" but have very different shooting styles. Ross had a textbook shot that you would use to teach others, Steve could get his shot off faster than anybody, and while Kelly's was not pretty I
did not care as long as he could put it in the hoop. As you can see every year in the NCAA Tournament, you need guys who can make three-point shots down the stretch.

JT: Your teams have recorded the seven highest semester GPAs in the history of the program. How much importance do you place on academics?

MA: It is really important to me and my family and the university. We place an emphasis on recruiting student-athletes, and one of the things I tell recruits is that I have graduated more guys in the past decade than anyone else out West. My players understand the commitment that it takes and the school gives them support with tutors. They represent our institution when they step on the court and in return we help them earn their degree.

JT: You taught a Coaches' Choice video presentation of the "4-Out/1-In Motion Offense". What makes it so successful, and how do you enjoy the teaching aspect of coaching?

MA: The best part of my job is teaching, and I think it is what I am very good at. It has been an evolution for me. I think that I am a better coach now than I was a decade ago. When we spread the floor it creates isolation and allows guys to drive to the lane. If the defense tries to pack it in then we can find an open man behind the arc. We have finished very high in the country in free throw, field goal and three-point shooting year in and year out and the proof is in the statistics.

JT: Your win total places you among the Top 5 in conference history. Would you prefer to stay in Flagstaff and become one of the best in the Big Sky, or do you one day hope to move up to a bigger conference to see how you stack up against the best in the country?

MA: I would definitely say the latter. My family enjoys it here and I have figured out how to be successful and do the job correctly. However, I would love to contend for a national title someday and I do not know if that is possible at NAU. That being said, I would not just jump at any offer. I have a passion for coaching and have been blessed with a lot of talent that helped me be successful in a very tough business.

JT: When people look back on your career, how do you want to be remembered the most?

MA: I hope they feel that I succeeded in a very tough situation and that my players graduated and were successful on the court.

Jon Teitel's "Forgotten Legends" Series: NAU's Andre Spencer

In the most recent installment in his "Forgotten Legends" interview series CHN writer Jon Teitel spent some time with Northern Arizona great Andre Spencer, who helped lead the Lumberjacks to their first-ever postseason appearance (1986 NIT). Spencer's scoring average jumped nearly ten points from his junior to senior season, and he went on to play professionally in the NBA, CBA and multiple foreign countries.

Jon Teitel: You began your college career at Bakersfield CC. Why did you decide to go there?

Andre Spencer: I was a late-bloomer. I did not start playing until high school so I still needed to develop physically. I had some Division I interest but needed to work on my game a lot. I had a good friend who was going to Bakersfield and I wanted to get out of Los Angeles and just experience college life.

JT: You later ended up at NAU, where you scored 9.8 PPG as a junior and 19 PPG as a senior. Why did you choose NAU, and how did you make such a big leap from your junior year to your senior year?

AS: NAU was not really on my radar. My JC coach wanted me to go to Oregon. I was used to the California weather and Flagstaff was pretty cold and rainy. However, it was a shorter drive home from Arizona and I really liked the campus and the outdoors. AD Gary Walker was a nice personable guy, as was assistant coach Pat Rafferty. My teammates were really great guys and it was nice to be a big fish in a little pond. Coach Jay Arnote and the rest of his staff really developed my fundamental skills, as I was a skinny, raw and athletic guy when I showed up.

JT: In 1986 you led the conference in shooting (61% FG). How were you able to dominate, and what is your secret for shooting?

AS: I was a real big fan of the bank shot. It is now a lost art form, although Tim Duncan and Dirk Nowitzki still use it effectively. My mid-range game had not developed yet and we already had plenty of long-range shooters, so I focused on my post play and footwork.

JT: You made 12-14 FG in the 1986 Big Sky conference semifinals (a six-point upset loss to eventual champion Montana St.). Was it just one of those scenarios where every shot you put up seemed to go in because you were "in the zone", and how close did you come to winning the game?

AS: It was a big game for us because we had a big rivalry with them. The bigger the game was, the bigger my game was. I loved a challenge!

JT: What are your memories of the 1986 NIT, the first postseason basketball game in school history (a six-point loss to Louisiana Tech)?

AS: Our trainer and historian told us to make sure that we put our best foot forward, and the school and administration really rallied around us. It was exciting to accomplish that. We thought we had an outside shot at making the NCAA tourney but did not get in.

JT: You played for three teams in the NBA from 1992-1994. What is your favorite memory from your NBA career?

AS: One of my fondest memories was my homecoming to play the Clippers at the Sports Arena, as I went to school literally across the street. All of my family and friends were there and we ended up winning the game. I even made Sportscenter's Top-10 after catching a great pass from Tim Hardaway and dunking the ball over Ken Norman. During a timeout after the dunk Coach Don Nelson asked me if I ever did that before joining his team, and I just laughed and told him that it was all due to his coaching! Nelson was great, as he and his son brought me in from the CBA. They always referred to me as a point-forward.

JT: You NBA career was sandwiched in between a decade plus of playing professionally in several countries (including Sweden, France, Israel, The Phillipines and Japan). What did you learn from these experiences, and how did the NBA compare to pro basketball overseas?

AS: The European experience was really an eye-opener for me. I watched Jacques Cousteau on TV as a child and I always said that I wanted to travel the world. The Sonics wanted me to play abroad for a year in Sweden to develop, but from then on my career was born. I had an agent named Lucky Cappuccino(!) who took me under his wing. I learned a lot and made lifelong friends during the process, and the worldly view helped me become a better person overall. It is like music in that it can bring people together and educate them.

JT: Your son Taj and daughter Dremel are both high school basketball players in California. How proud are you of their success, and do you think they can play at the college level?

AS: My daughter is kind of like me in that she is slowly blossoming into her role. She has basketball genetics and is finally understanding that she can get a free scholarship if she so desires. She is also a straight A student, which I am very proud of. Taj is finally starting to come into his own this year after being a role player in the past on a team with former McDonald's All-American Michael Snaer. He is finally developing his offensive skills, as he had 17 points and 20 rebounds in a game. He used to complain that the coach was not letting him shoot, but I told him that if he is getting 20 rebounds per game then he should feel free to take a shot or two here and there!

JT: You currently are a coach at Heritage HS in Romoland, CA. How do you like coaching, and what do you hope to do in the future?

AS: I was coaching last year, but am spending this year traveling around and watching my kids play at home and on the road and encouraging their development.

JT: When people look back on your career, how do you want to be remembered the most?

AS: I never really thought about it before. I hope they remember me as a hard worker who loved the game. For me it was how I expressed myself, like Picasso with his tapestry.

Jon Teitel's Forgotten Legends Series: Northern Arizona Great Kelly Golob

In the most recent installment of his "Forgotten Legends" interview series, CHN writer Jon Teitel spent some time with Kelly Golob, who is the all-time leading scorer in Northern Arizona University history. A three-time All-Big Sky performer, Golob also ranks second in school history with 295 three pointers made.

Jon Teitel: Why did you choose to attend NAU?
Kelly Golob: I chose NAU because they had just made the NCAA tourney in 2000 and my goal for playing Division I basketball was to play in the tourney, which is the greatest sporting event there is.

JT: You were known for having an unorthodox shooting release. Is that just the way you 1st learned to shoot, and did you just stick with it because it worked?
KG: I cannot really explain how I learned to shoot the way I did. I get asked that a lot, but it just naturally developed as I took thousands of shots every week while growing up and getting stronger. Some people tried to get me to change my form, but I practiced that way so much that my technique was ingrained into every muscle of my body.

JT: During your career you were a three-time All-Big Sky performer. How were you able to dominate throughout your college career?
KG: I was very fortunate to have many great teammates, and more importantly many great people. I can honestly say that I would not have been nearly as successful if I had not had the privilege of playing with twelve of my closest friends every season. Luck is when preparation meets opportunity, and therefore I would definitely say that luck had a lot to do with it.

JT: In 2004 you made a career-high 10 three-point shots against San Diego. Was it just one of those scenarios where every shot you put up seemed to go in because you were "in the zone"?
KG: That game was one that I will never forget. It was the last day before our three-day Christmas break and everyone was feeling great. San Diego played a zone almost the entire game, and kept leaving me open in the corner. Since that was my favorite spot on the court, I just felt like I was at practice.

JT: In 2006 you scored 20 points in a win over Eastern Washington, but Rodney Stuckey scored a school-record 45 points in the loss. Could you tell at the time that Stuckey was going to become a star?
KG: We all knew that Stuckey was a special player; even as a freshman, he was one of the most complete players I played against in my college career. He was the type of player who would do anything and everything that his team needed him to do, and that ability combined with his physical gifts were a good sign that he would be great.

JT: In 2006 you were named an Academic All-American. What role did academics play in your life and how rigorous were your classes?
KG: Academics were always important for me at NAU, although I confess that for most of the year I had to exert a lot more effort in the gym! My major was Exercise Physiology, with a minor in Chemistry. It was a tremendous program to prepare health care professionals, and when I reached Chiropractic School I realized how well-prepared my courses had made me.

JT: You finished your career as the leading scorer in NAU history. Did you realize at the time how prolific a player you were?
KG: Going into my senior season, I realized that I had a chance to set the school's all-time scoring record. However, my primary goal every season was to win the Big Sky title and make it to the NCAA tourney. I would have traded my record in a second for the chance to play in the Big Dance.

JT: At the conclusion of your career you were awarded an NCAA post-graduate scholarship. What did this honor mean to you, and what course of study did you pursue?
KG: Receiving the scholarship was a huge honor, and in hindsight, it is an even greater honor than earning a Division I scholarship. After playing one season professionally, I entered Chiropractic School, which had always been my goal since high school.

JT: You played professionally in Germany after graduating. What did you learn from the experience, and how did it compare to college basketball?
KG: Living in Germany taught me a lot about the European lifestyle/sports culture. Their style of basketball is different from college in a lot of ways. The training, practices, and strategic philosophies are all different, but even so, basketball is still the best game on earth no matter how it is played.

JT: When people look back on your career, what do you want them to remember the most?
KG: I hope that people remember my career as an example of the accomplishments that can come when someone works hard and treats people well in all aspects of their life. I was extremely blessed to have success on so many levels (athletically, academically, and personally), and I would like to think that much of that was the result of staying humble, being disciplined, working hard, and having fun.

Stephen Sir continued his hot shooting as he and his Northern Arizona teammates made 64 percent of their shots in the second half to pull away from Eastern Washington 91-80 Thursday (Jan. 18) in a Big Sky Conference men’s basketball game at Reese Court in Cheney, Wash.

Sir made 7-of-10 three-pointers en route to finishing with a game-high 25 points. Eastern’s Rodney Stuckey had 24 points, eight rebounds and five assists, but made only 10-of-21 shots overall. He missed all four of his three-point attempts and five free throws.

Eastern fell to 3-4 in the Big Sky and 9-10 overall as EWU dropped its second league home game in three tries. Northern Arizona, the preseason pick by coaches to win the league title, improved to 5-2 in the Big Sky and 10-8 overall.

"Tonight's loss stings very bad,” said Eagle head coach Mike Burns. “You don't get these games back. You can rationalize splitting games on the road, but you can't rationalize splitting games at home."

Northern Arizona finished 12-of-20 from three-point range, as Sir has now made 26 of his last 34 treys. Eastern was just 2-of-14 from the three-point stripe. The Eagles also made only 8-of-22 free throws, including just 4-of-9 by Stuckey, the Big Sky’s leader entering the game at 86.3 percent.

With Sir scoring 14 points after halftime -- with four three-pointers -- NAU opened up a seven-point lead less than five minutes into the second half. Eastern cut the margin to one at the 11:01 mark, but NAU used an 8-0 run to take command and led by as many as 13.

Less than two weeks ago on Jan. 6, the Eagles lost at Northern Arizona 109-101. Eastern allowed NAU to make 61 percent of its shots as Tyrone Bazy (32) and Sir (22) combined for 54 points. Sir was this week’s Big Sky co-Player of the Week.

“We just made a couple of mental errors and they got things going,” said Burns. “Sir has been on fire the last three weeks. And when we go 2-of-14 from three and they go 12-of-20, combined with our poor free throw shooting, it is too much to overcome."

Eastern managed to out-rebound the Lumberjacks 34-30 and had 14 turnovers to NAU’s 10. Eastern actually shot better than NAU, making 56.5 percent for its fourth-best shooting percentage of the season. The Lumberjacks finished at 54.1 percent.

"Tonight at times our effort was very good -- our guys were flying to the ball and doing some good things,” said Burns. “We out-rebounded NAU and those are effort things.”

Paul Butorac added 16 points, six rebounds and two blocked shots for the Eagles as he made 7-of-10 shots from the field. Kellen Williams chipped in 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting.

Ryan McCurdy made 8-of-10 shots and finished with 18 points and eight rebounds. Bazy came off the bench to finish with 19 points and five assists, and Josh Wilson had a career-high 14 assists.

The first half featured nine ties and three lead changes as NAU led 40-38 at intermission. Eastern, thanks to 58 percent shooting in the first half, led by as many as six.

"Some things that stand out to me after this game are that Stephen Sir was 7-10 and two of those specifically were wide open shots in the second half that stung,” said Burns. “You combine that with going 8-of-22 at the free throw line and missing the first shots in the one-and-one bonus opportunities in a home game, you are not going to win. Those extra 14 points we could have capitalized on at the foul line would have helped significantly tonight."

"Our free throws haven't had as big of a negative impact in games as they were tonight,” he added. “At Portland State we shot much better at the line (22-of-28). If we could have done that tonight it would have helped significantly."

"NAU did a good job of getting the ball to Ryan McCurdy deep in the post, and when he gets down there he usually scores, Tyrone Bazy was 2-of-2 from three and he is a 23 percent three-point shooter. We were more worried about his penetration than we were about his three-point shooting. We knew Sir and (Nathan) Geiser could shoot the ball well. We let them get their feet set and they were able to make those shots."

Eastern returns to action Saturday (Jan. 20) when it hosts Northern Colorado. Two weeks ago on Jan. 4 in Greeley, Colo., Eastern edged the Bears 88-87 as Stuckey scored 25 points and had 10 assists.

Northern Colorado is 1-6 in the Big Sky and 3-16 overall after falling at Portland State 86-70 on Thursday. Eastern defeated the same PSU team 88-70 in Portland last Saturday (Jan. 13).

"These conference games are starting to become must wins,” said Burns. “We have to come back Saturday night against a Northern Colorado team that is far better than their record indicates -- an example being that UNC beat NAU last Thursday."

"We need to take better care of the basketball against UNC than we did tonight. We need to come out with better defensive intensity, and, obviously, we need to make our free throws."

In very close balloting, Northern Arizona (21-11, 12-2 last season) was picked first in the coaches poll by just one point over Montana (24-7, 10-4). Meanwhile, the Grizzlies were picked first in the media poll by just one point over the Lumberjacks. They were followed by consensus third, fourth and fifth teams, Eastern Washington (15-15, 9-5), Portland State (12-16, 5-9) and Sacramento State (15-15, 5-9).

The 2006-07 Big Sky season will include the addition of new conference member Northern Colorado. UNC, Montana State, Idaho State and Weber State – picked in various order sixth through ninth in the polls – all have new head coaches this season. Northern Colorado will play a full Big Sky schedule, but because of NCAA reclassification requirements, will not be eligible for the regular-season title, or a trip to the postseason.
