Wednesday Recap: Temple Knocks Off #3 Duke

The question asked going into Temple's matchup with #3 Duke was whether or not they would be able to take care of business in the paint with the injured Micheal Eric still out. But by the end of the contest it was apparent that wasn't the biggest issue to be addressed for either team as the Owls won 78-73.

Temple relies heavily on their guards for offense, and Duke didn't have the answers for Fran Dunphy's perimeter players on either end of the floor. Khalif Wyatt led Temple with 22 points, Rahlir Hollis-Jefferson added 17 and three other players scored 11 points in leading the program to their first win over Duke since 1996 (nine meetings).

"I think there was only one way we could win, and that is to manage the game and have those three guys [in control]," said Temple head coach Fran Dunphy of Moore, Wyatt and Juan Fernandez. "And they're pretty good basketball players and they're going to be able to make good decisions with the ball."

Rebounding wasn't a concern for the Owls either as they out-rebounded Duke 32-29. Temple did turn the ball over 17 times in the win, but the Owls also forced 16 Duke turnovers with eleven coming by way of a steal. Duke's guards had a rough time on both ends of the floor, but the more glaring issue for the Blue Devils came on the defensive end.

As a team Temple shot 56.4% from the field as they were able to find the looks they desired when running their offense. Duke on the other hand made 47.5% of their shots, and while that's not a bad number the good looks were tougher to come by for Mike Krzyzewski's team. There's also the offensive end of the floor for the Duke perimeter, which failed to take advantage of the play of big men Mason and Miles Plumlee, who combined for 33 points and 17 rebounds.

Duke's starting guards (Austin Rivers, Seth Curry and Tyler Thornton) combined to make seven of twenty-one shots from the field while reserves Quinn Cook (2-6 FG) and Andre Dawkins (0-3 FG) didn't fare much better. Outside of Rivers the Blue Devils (right now) don't have players who can apply pressure to defenses with their playmaking ability, and that got them in trouble against Temple's experienced backcourt.

The key for Rivers, who will likely have to develop into the lead option for this role, is to develop into a guard who can also set up his teammates. That may be Duke's best hope in the long-term when thinking about whether or not they can win a national title.

"We wanted to take away the three and try to run them off the three-point line a little bit," said Dunphy of their defensive strategy. "I was pleased with our defense and obviously when you can win a game like this, everybody has to play well and you have to get a little lucky, and I think we did that."

The benefit of a game like this in defeat is that Duke has a far better idea of what they need to clean up going into ACC play than they likely would had this contest been against a lesser opponent. As for Temple, winning in front of the third-largest crowd to watch a basketball game at Wells Fargo Center is quite the boost for the program as they go into Atlantic 10 play.

There's been more than enough time to adjust to not having Eric or Scootie Randall, and the Owls will benefit as it has allowed player such as Anthony Lee to take advantage of more playing time. With Xavier going through their struggles the top spot in the A-10 is up for grabs, and Temple is more than capable of grabbing the regular season title.

Other Notable Happenings

1. Georgetown comes back from 17 down to beat #20 Marquette.
With 13:13 left in the game Buzz Williams' Golden Eagles led #9 Georgetown 56-39 and looked to be well on their way to a big conference road victory. But the Hoyas refused to quit, rallying all the way back to tie the score at 66 with 2:33 to go. And John Thompson III's team completed the comeback in thrilling fashion as Hollis Thompson knocked down a three with 24 seconds remaining to give the Hoyas a 73-70 win at the Verizon Center. Jason Clark scored a game-high 26 points to lead the victors, but the big switch occurred in the points in the paint and "paint touches" that are a core value of the Marquette program.

In the first half the Golden Eagles held a 22-8 edge in points in the paint, taking a 43-29 lead into the half as a result. Things flipped in the second half, as Georgetown outscored Marquette 20-4 in the paint. Marquette also falied to score a single fast break point in the second half, and Georgetown taking better care of the basketball (five turnovers compared to 12 in the first half) had a lot to do with that. Georgetown added another line to what is currently the Big East's best resume with a thrilling comeback, while Marquette was issued a tough reminder of what happens when they stray away from what makes them so successful.

2. Kansas controls the boards in a double-digit win over #22 Kansas State.
With Kansas State being the better rebounding team entering Wednesday's showdown it was imperative that Kansas take care of the glass at Allen Fieldhouse. Bill Self's team did that and then some, bludgeoning the Wildcats to the tune of a 50-26 edge on the boards in a 67-49 victory. K-State didn't help themselves by shooting 31.6% from the field (Kansas made 45.5% of their shots) either, but for the Wildcats to resort to shooting 20 three-pointers (making five) is an issue for a team that makes just 33% of their three-pointers on the season.

Thomas Robinson led the way for Kansas with 15 points and 14 rebounds, but it was the play of Travis Releford that stole the show. Releford scored a team-high 16 points while also grabbing 11 rebounds for his first career double-double, providing the help that Kansas will need more of as the season wears on if they're to compete with a team like Baylor in the race for the Big 12 title. Jeff Withey chipped in with eight points and six blocks, rebounding from an uninspired performance in the Jayhawks' win over North Dakota. If guys such as Releford and Withey can be consistent factors Kansas can win another conference title.

3. La Salle takes controls of the game late in the first half on their way to a win over Xavier.
It's been tough sledding for Chris Mack's Xavier club since the brawl with Cincinnati in December, as the combination of suspensions and a challenging schedule proved to be a bit much for the Musketeers. But with all parties involved back, should it really be taking this long to regain the confidence and chemistry they had before that incident? That's a definite concern for Xavier going forward, but on Wednesday night it was all about Dr. John Giannini's Explorers at Tom Gola Arena.

With the program's greatest player not named Tom Gola (Lionel Simmons) in attendance, La Salle closed the first half on a 22-6 run and went on to win 80-70 in the Atlantic 10 opener for both teams. Earl Pettis scored 23 points and Ramon Galloway added 16 as four players reached double figures for the Explorers, who have now won nine of their last ten games. La Salle assisted on 20 of their 26 baskets, and outscoring Xavier 27-12 from deep was key as well. Xavier will be the attention-grabber due to the preseason expectations, but be sure to keep an eye on the Explorers as well.

Quick Hitters

1. Northwestern was presented a nice opportunity to pick up a quality win with Illinois visiting Evanston, and Bill Carmody's Wildcats couldn't get the job done as they fell 57-56. Myers Leonard's block of a Drew Crawford shot in the final seconds preserved the win for the Fighting Illini, dropping Northwestern to 1-2 in Big Ten play.

2. Without Josh Benson, Dayton still found a way to win their Atlantic 10 opener as they beat Saint Louis 79-72 in overtime. Cody Ellis banked in a three with two seconds remaining to send the game to overtime, but the Billikens were unable to get over the hump in the extra session. Kevin Dillard led the Flyers with 18 points.

3. Yancy Gates (and Cheikh Mbodj) returned to the floor for Cincinnati, chipping in with six points, eight rebounds and three blocks in the Bearcats' 71-55 win over Notre Dame. Dion Dixon led Mick Cronin's team with 18 points, and Cincinnati has the look of a team that's comfortable in its new style. UC hasn't lost since the brawl with crosstown rival Xavier, winning seven straight games.

4. Well, it may be time to start taking Ron Hunter's Georgia State team seriously, as they followed up a win over Drexel with a 55-53 win at VCU tonight. Jihad Ali scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Panthers, who are now 3-0 in CAA play and have an overall record of 11-3.

5. Even with wins over Robert Morris and Charlotte there wasn't the most positive feeling about Memphis' hopes as they approach Conference USA play. That may have changed on Wednesday as the Tigers beat Tennessee 69-51, controlling the run of play for much of the night. Antonio Barton led the Tigers with 19 points and Tarik Black added 18 and seven rebounds.

6. Iowa held on despite some bad free throw shooting to win their second straight conference road game, 64-62 at Minnesota. Matt Gatens scored 19 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the Hawkeyes while Minnesota shot 4-for-23 from deep, allowing Iowa to get away with Melsahn Basabe going scoreless in 11 minutes of action.

7. There may not be a better piece of evidence to use in explaining the wild nature of the Missouri Valley than the fact that Southern Illinois is now 2-1 in league play thanks to their 74-65 win at Bradley. Mamadou Seck played very well, finishing with 15 points, 11 rebounds and six assists to lead the Salukis to their second straight league victory. SIU is part of a six-way tie for first place in the MVC.

8. Someone may want to frame the box score from Florida State's 85-56 win over Auburn, because in all honesty it's going to be tough for the Seminoles to match that offensive output in ACC play. FSU made 70.5% of their two-point shots while Auburn made just a third of theirs, scoring 16 points in the first half (FSU led 50-16 at the break). Michael Snaer led the victors with 22 points.

Three Notable Performances

1. C Garrett Stutz (Wichita State)
Stutz scored a career-high 29 points (12-14 FG), grabbed ten rebounds, dished out four assists and blocked three shots in the Shockers' 67-66 win at Evansville. Colt Ryan paced the Purple Aces with 31 points.

2. F Jamelle Hagins (Delaware)
21 points, 18 rebounds and five blocked shots in the Blue Hens' 67-66 win over Hofstra.

3. G Mike James (Lamar)
31 points (12-16 FG) and three steals in the Cardinals' 74-58 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

Sunday Recap: Kansas State Controls Title Game Throughout

The question leading into the title game of the Diamond Head Classic was how would Kansas State deal with Long Beach State guard Casper Ware. But by the end of the game it was obvious that the better question to ask was how the senior would navigate the Wildcats' tough perimeter defense. Thanks in large part to Will Spradling and Martavious Irving the Wildcats harassed Ware in to a 5-for-18 night from the field, and they took control of the game at both ends on their way to a 77-60 win in Honolulu. Rodney McGruder led the way offensively with 28 points and six rebounds, and he was named tournament MVP as a result of his play all weekend.

As a team the 49ers shot just 36.8% from the field and 6-for-19 from beyond the arc, and while they did manage to grab 17 offensive rebounds it wasn't enough to overcome the K-State attack. Ware and Larry Anderson scored 17 points apiece for the 49ers but no other player would score more than eight on the night for them. In addition to McGruder's performance Spradling scored 17 points and Jamar Samuels added 11 to go along with eight rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots. Kansas State out-rebounded Long Beach State 39-32 and outscored the 49ers 48-38 in the paint, making 54% of their two-point shots.

Long Beach State by comparison made just 39% of their two-point shots, and when adding to that a minus-8 in points from the foul line (20-12; LBSU shot 12-for-21) there's no mystery as to why they were unable to make a comeback. Kansas State led by as many as 18 points in the second half of a game they never trailed, and it's time to start thinking of Frank Martin's club as a serious contender in the Big 12. They've got the bodies up front, with Samuels, Thomas Gipson and Jordan Henriquez-Roberts, and the perimeter depth is there as well. Baylor, Missouri and Kansas are the names that have received the headlines early, but K-State isn't far behind.

As for Long Beach State, while a win on Sunday would have been another solid boost for a non-conference schedule that is the toughest in America they essentially did what they had to do. In beating Xavier they landed a second win over a Top 15 (at the time) team, and their win over Auburn meant avoiding the possibility of having a "bad loss" take away from their resume. In Big West play they're not going to encounter a team like Kansas State, so while UCSB will once again provided a stiff challenge and Cal Poly's been a surprise the 49ers should be fine. They simply ran into a team that was able to put their stamp on the game early and determine the "rules of engagement" throughout.

Other Notable Happenings

1. Xavier beats Southern Illinois to end their three-game losing streak.
Falling to host Hawaii on Friday was tough enough for the Musketeers, who lost their third straight game for the first time in Chris Mack's tenure as head coach. But the situation would have been nothing compared to what could have been had they left the islands 0-3. Tu Holloway and Mark Lyons combined to score 38 points (Holloway dished out seven assists while Lyons grabbed ten rebounds) as the Musketeers beat Southern Illinois 87-77 in the seventh place game. Dantiel Daniels led four Salukis in double figures with 22 points but SIU shot just 40% from the field. So how did they score 77 points? Xavier couldn't keep them off the glass, as Southern Illinois grabbed 19 offensive rebounds on the afternoon.

But Xavier got to the foul line early and often, making 36 of their 48 attempts to take advantage of a 28-16 foul count. In addition to Lyons forward Andre Walker (13 points, 10 rebounds) recorded the first double-double of his career, and it couldn't have come at a better time for a team in desperate need of a win. Will this result allow Xavier to regain the confidence lost in the aftermath of the Cincinnati game? They get Dezmine Wells back so that will definitely help, and they've got a little time before Atlantic 10 play begins to regain the chemistry. This is not a team anyone will line up to face anytime soon.

2. UTEP makes the plays late to pull away from Auburn for third place.
Many picked Tim Floyd's team, which features nine players in their first season on the floor for the program, to finish in the bottom three of Conference USA. Either C-USA is a much-tougher conference than it's given credit for or people were wrong about the Miners, because in going 2-1 at the Diamond Head Classic that did not look like a team that would finish 10th-12th in the league. John Bohannon played his best game of the tournament in the Miners' 83-76 win over Auburn, finishing with 20 points and nine rebounds, and guard Michael Perez added 18 points and a couple of daggers late to seal the deal.

Five UTEP players reached double figures while Tim Floyd's move to a box-and-1 on Frankie Sullivan took the Auburn star out of the flow of the offense in the second half. Kenny Gabriel stepped up with 24 points, eight rebounds and four assists but that wasn't enough to make up for Sullivan scoring seven points on 2-for-5 shooting from the field. UTEP isn't particularly deep as they used just seven players and the inexperience has been documented. But when considering players like Bohannon and Perez, who are getting used to bigger roles, and a transfer in Jacques Streeter who's run a team at this level before (Cal-State Fullerton) maybe they can surprise some folks in Conference USA.

3. Zane Johnson's shooting sparks Hawaii's win over Clemson.
While most visitors to the islands leave with memories they'll never forget, the same may not be said for the Clemson Tigers in terms of their on-court experience. Milton Jennings was suspended for Sunday's fifth-place game against Hawaii due to conduct detrimental to the team for his behavior in a timeout in Friday's win over SIU, but it might not have mattered if he were on the floor Sunday. Zane Johnson made six of his twelve three-point attempts in scoring a game-high 27 points and the Warriors made 16 of 19 free throws in their 75-68 victory.

Vander Joaquim added 14 points and 10 rebounds while Hauns Brereton chipped in with 10 points off the bench. Clemson simple couldn't shoot well enough from inside of the arc, making 18 of 48 shots from two on the afternoon. Gib Arnold's team winning two of three games is a good boost for them as they approach WAC play, where many expect them to slot into the middle of the pack. As for Clemson, they picked up a win but it wasn't pretty. If Jennings and Devin Booker can't provide consistent help for Tanner Smith and Andre Young it could be a long season in the ACC despite the wide-open nature of the league outside of the top two.

Three Notable Performances

1. G Rodney McGruder (Kansas State)
28 points and six rebounds in the Wildcats' 77-60 win over Long Beach State.

2. G Zane Johnson (Hawaii)
27 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals in the Warriors' 75-68 win over Clemson.

3. C John Bohannon (UTEP)
20 points (6-9 FG, 8-9 FT), nine rebounds, three assists and two steals in the Miners' 83-76 win over Auburn.

Diamond Head Classic All-Tournament Team

G Rodney McGruder (Kansas State) - MVP
G Zane Johnson (Hawaii)
G Michael Perez (UTEP)
G Larry Anderson (Long Beach State)
F Jamar Samuels (Kansas State)

Sunday Preview: Long Beach State vs. Kansas State

Happy Holidays to you all. Before getting into a preview of today's action, here are two stories here and here that you all will enjoy (h/t to Jameson Fleming of CBSSports.com and College Hoops Journal).

The only games being played on Christmas Day are out in Hawaii, with the Diamond Head Classic wrapping up. The title game matches Long Beach State (7-5), who has played one of the toughest schedules in the country to date, and a Kansas State (9-1) team that's been better than some expected. After beating Xavier in the first round the 49ers took care of business against Auburn in a matchup that would have done more harm in a loss than good in a win from a resume standpoint. As for Kansas State, they've beaten both Southern Illinois and UTEP in games they were expected to win, with the latter offering up more of a challenge than many anticipated going into the event.

The question for the Wildcats is how they go about defending Long Beach State point guard Casper Ware (16.7 ppg, 3.8 apg), who runs the show for the 49ers while also being asked to lead the team in scoring. Ware's shooting percentages aren't all that impressive, but that's got more to do with the number of shots Dan Monson has him take in their offense than shot selection. A key factor for the 49ers, both this weekend and in Big West play, will be freshman Michael Caffey. Caffey played very well in their win over Xavier, and his emergence off the bench will both keep Ware fresh and allow the senior to do more work off the ball when paired together with Caffey.

Kansas State has also had a reserve emerge while in Hawaii, as freshman Angel Rodriguez (7.7 ppg, 2.6 apg) has averaged 16.5 points per game in the tournament. Rodriguez made 10 of 16 shots from the field in the two wins, by far his best performance this season. If he can keep this up the freshman will be a nice addition to starters Will Spradling (11.2 ppg, 2.9 apg) and Rodney McGruder (10.6 ppg, 5.1 rpg) not to mention fellow reserve Shane Southwell. Long Beach State overall has more firepower on the perimeter however, with senior Larry Anderson (14.9 ppg, 4.6 rpg) and junior James Ennis (9.5 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 2.8 apg) also being key cogs in their attack.

The battle up front will be interesting to watch, with the Wildcats being the bigger of the two teams. But that doesn't mean that life will be easy for them, as the experienced T.J. Robinson (12.3 ppg, 10.0 rpg) and Eugene Phelps (9.3 ppg, 6.0 rpg) anchoring things for the 49ers. Long Beach State can also bring Edis Dervisevic off the bench, and this is something they may have to do against the K-State attack. Jamar Samuels (12.1 ppg, 7.0 rpg) leads the way for Kansas State while freshman Thomas Gipson (11.2 ppg, 7.1 rpg) has the build of a player far more experienced than he actually is.

There's also junior Jordan Henriquez-Roberts, who has progressed a great deal in his two-plus seasons in Manhattan. He'll be a key figure for the Wildcats going forward into Big 12 play, as they'll encounter some deep frontcourts. Kansas State has been the better rebounding team of the two, and they even average more possessions per game than Long Beach State. The 49ers have to hold their own on the glass in order to win, and given their schedule to date they're more than capable of doing so. Keep an eye on turnover margin as well, with both teams breaking even on assist-to-turnover ratio while forcing at least 16 turnovers per game defensively.

In the other games in Honolulu Xavier looks to bounce back from a disappointing loss to Hawaii against Southern Illinois, and the truth is that Chris Mack's team should win by a good margin. The Salukis have a good player in senior Mamadou Seck, and they have been competitive in their two games on the island, but Chris Lowery's bunch is in for a tough time in the Missouri Valley.

Clemson and host Hawaii play in the fifth-place game, as Tanner Smith stepped up for the Tigers in their win over SIU. Forwards Josten Thomas and Vander Joaquim provide a tough matchup inside however, meaning that it's time for Devin Booker to step up with Milton Jennings suspended. And in the third-place game UTEP, led by Jacques Streeter and the surprising Michael Perez, takes on Auburn in what should be a toss-up.

College Hoops Weekend Recap: Vanderbilt Falls at Home

One big reason why so many were hesitant to peg Vanderbilt for a trip to the Final Four has been their toughness, of both the mental and physical variety. After being able to run freely around the floor for much of their 78-64 win over Oregon on Friday night, those spaces closed up a great deal against Cleveland State on Sunday. And to be frank the Commodores didn't handle it well, shooting just 29.4% from the field in the first half and trailing 37-24 at the break. Vandy was unable to close the gap in the second half, falling 71-58 and becoming the first Top 10 team to lose this season.

"They got us out of our ability to get into our offense," said Vanderbilt head coach Kevin Stallings. "Our point guard play was less than stellar. We just didn't play well. We didn't guard well with toughness. We got what we deserved."

There's that word: toughness. It's not all about being able to stick one's chest out during a game, but rather the little things. The ability to run sharp cuts and not allowing the defender to change one's path, hitting the glass on both ends, taking care of the ball and not settling for poor shots. The Commodores turned the ball over 21 times on Sunday, with guards John Jenkins and Lee Tinsley turning the ball over three times apiece and wing Jeffery Taylor six. And Cleveland State's D'Aundray Brown was the chief instigator for the Vikings as he led the team with 18 points, eight rebounds and seven steals.

"I thought he guarded your best player and shut him down, and that's D'Aundray Brown," said Cleveland State head coach Gary Waters. "D'Aundray Brown was defensive player of the year two years ago with our league. I feel if we had him last year, we won 27 games, I thought we'd been really good last year, but he didn't play. Now he's hungry, he's excited about coming back. But he is a defensive star."

Jenkins scored 17 points but made just five of fourteen shots from the field, and after boasting an offensive rating of 133.8 against Oregon the junior was limited to a rating of 91.9 by Cleveland State. The Commodores were able to get to the foul line, making 18 of 26 from the charity stripe, but they didn't deal with the Vikings' physical defense very well and it showed in the numbers.

Vanderbilt's effective field goal percentage dropped from 47.7% (Oregon) to 39.2%, and their efficiency dropped some thirty points. Just goes to show the value of a good defense, as Cleveland State bore a closer resemblance to what's expected of Vanderbilt on a nightly basis. The good news for Vanderbilt is that they've learned this lesson on November 13th. The key now is to build to the point where they aren't getting that final jolt far too soon in March.

Other Notable Happenings

1.Evansville beats Butler for the second straight season in an overtime thriller.
Marty Simmons' Purple Aces got off to a horrific start offensively against the two-time defending national runners-up, making just six of sixteen shots and turning the ball over ten times to trail 37-28 at the half. But Evansville turned things around, turning the ball over six times and out-rebounding the Bulldogs 19-12, scoring 41 points and using an 11-0 run to tie things up at 54 with 8:24 left in regulation.

A wild finish to regulation resulted in the game going to overtime after Butler's Andrew Smith missed a pair of free throws, and behind Colt Ryan's 23 points the Purple Aces beat Butler for the second straight season. Evansville was picked in the preseason to finish 5th in the Missouri Valley, and this is a good result for a program that before last season hadn't finished the season with a non-losing league record since 2000-01.

2. Tray Woodall posts his second straight double-double for Pittsburgh.
With Brad Wanamaker moving on to the professional ranks it was clear that Jamie Dixon would call on redshirt junior Tray Woodall to take over at the point. And if the first two games of the season are any indication of his preparedness Pittsburgh could have their seventh winner of the Big East's Most Improved Player award since its inception for the 1996-97 season. After accounting for 25 points, 10 assists and six rebounds in Pitt's blowout win over Albany on Friday, Woodall posted a line of 17 points, 10 assists and seven rebound in an 86-78 win over Rider.

Ashton Gibbs added a game-high 24 points and Nasir Robinson 22 and the Panthers held a dominant 40-16 edge on the boards as they moved to 81-0 in non-conference games at Petersen Events Center in the months of November and December. But at this rate, Woodall could be a big reason why Pittsburgh enjoys a more profitable March.

3. Kevin Parrom returns to the court for Arizona while Josiah Turner sits.
Arizona received a good boost to their rotation with the return of wing Kevin Parrom, who was out due to a gunshot wound suffered in late-September. And while it wasn't apparent early as the Wildcats struggled to deal with a Ball State team that led by as many as 11 points early in the second half, Parrom's spark was most noticeable on the defensive end as the Cats came back to win 73-63. Parrom finished with six points, four rebounds and two assists in 18 minutes of action, far more than anyone expected him to see on Sunday.

Kyle Fogg led the way offensively with 21 points and Solomon Hill added 16, and Arizona clamped down to hold Ball State scoreless for nearly six minutes late in the second half. The other storyline on Sunday was the benching of freshman point guard Josiah Turner, whom head coach Sean Miller sat out in what would best be described as a "teaching moment". No suspension, just a chance to help the freshman mature some and it's a move that should pay off. Arizona added a player to the rotation, and as Parrom gets back into game condition look for this team to improve.

4. Ray Turner scores 20 for the second straight game as Texas A&M adjusts to not having Khris Middleton.
Khris Middleton is out for the next 3-4 weeks after undergoing surgery for a partially torn meniscus, so the question for the Aggies is who will step up to account for his scoring. Enter forward Ray Turner, who scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the Aggies' 83-58 win over Southern. This was Turner's second straight 20-point outing for the Aggies, who also received the boost of head coach Billy Kennedy returning to the sidelines. Kennedy had left the team for a few weeks after being diagnosed with the beginning stages of Parkinson's Disease, so it's good to see him back on the sidelines. But back to the Texas A&M offense, which could likely end up with more weapons than last year's outfit had, meaning that the Aggies could very well win the Big 12. And if they're getting consistent production from Turner once Middleton returns, Big 12 contention likely becomes a definite.

5. Northern Iowa impressive defensively in a 17-point win at Old Dominion.
You never sell a Ben Jacobson-coached team short regardless of the personnel changes, and Northern Iowa provided a nice piece of evidence as to why on Saturday night. Northern Iowa limited Old Dominion to 27.3% shooting and forced 19 Monarch turnovers in their 63-46 win in Norfolk, posting what could be the most impressive result of the weekend. It was a rough experience for ODU, who made just seven of twenty-seven shots from inside of the arc while shooting a frigid 29.4% (5-for-17) from beyond it. Starters Jake Koch and Anthony James combined to score 31 points for the Panthers and Mark Sonnen added 12 off the bench, but this was a powerful statement as to what UNI can do on the other end of the floor. ODU has some key personnel losses to account for as well, but this defensive show was outstanding.

Quick Hitters

1. Southern Illinois displayed how not to begin a season when some believe your head coach to be on the proverbial "hot seat", falling 64-63 to Division II Ohio Dominican. Mamadou Seck was productive for the Salukis with 18 points, 14 rebounds and two blocks but a pair of Jake Mochoskay free throws with 30 seconds remaining gave Ohio Dominican their first-ever win over a Division I opponent.

2. Louisville has absolutely no luck when it comes to the injury bug. Wayne Blackshear is out until at least February with a torn labrum in his shoulder, and Mike Marra went down with a season-ending knee injury in their 68-48 win over Lamar on Sunday.

3. Loyola Marymount did a poor job of building on their win over UCLA on Friday night as they lost to Middle Tennessee State 58-51 on Sunday. After scoring 21 points on Friday night Anthony Ireland made just two of eleven shots, scoring five points.

4. Wagner opened their season with an impressive 73-57 win at Princeton on Saturday. Josh Thompson led the way with 14 points and nine rebounds off the bench for the Seahawks, who are expected to be a contender in the NEC.

5. One stat line that may not jump out from a numbers standpoint but is important to note: James Padgett's 12 points and seven rebounds in Maryland's 71-62 win over UNC Wilmington. Even when Alex Len returns (serving a 10-game NCAA suspension) Mark Turgeon's going to need Padgett due to the Terps lack of frontcourt depth.

Notable Performances

1. G Damon Heuir (Southern Utah)
In the first two games of the season Heuir made just one of seven shots and scored six points. Against Bryant on Sunday: 13-16 FG, 33 points.

2. G Nate Wolters (South Dakota State)
32 points and 11 assists in the Jackrabbits' 82-76 win over Western Michigan on Saturday.

3. F Arnett Moultrie (Mississippi State)
28 points and 13 rebounds in the Bulldogs' 80-65 win over South Alabama.

4. G J'Covan Brown (Texas)
28 points, eight assists and four rebounds in the Longhorns' 82-46 win over Boston University.

5. G Jamar Franklin (San Diego State)
31 points, six rebounds and three steals off the bench in the Aztecs' 89-74 win over UC Davis.

Friday Afternoon Conference Tournament Happenings

You know it's March where there's midday college basketball to be discussed. Friday afternoon delivered just six games (one in progress) but there hasn't been a lack of drama. The Colonial, Missouri Valley and Southern conferences all had afternoon doubleheaders in their tournaments, with the MVC in the quarterfinals while the other two leagues are playing first round games today.

Colonial

(8) Georgia State 58, (9) UNC Wilmington 52

The collegiate career of UNC Wilmington guard Chad Tomko came to a tough end in the first game of the day in Richmond. Tomko led the Seahawks with 19 points but he shot 7-for-21 from the field and finished with four turnovers, the last of which came with just over a minute remaining and UNCW trailing by five (54-49). As a team UNCW shot a season-worst 29.5% from the field, and they could never get into a groove offensively. It also didn't help that the Seahawks made just 10 of 20 from the foul line. Josh Micheaux led the Panthers, who earn the honor of facing regular season champion George Mason at noon tomorrow, with 14 points while Eric Buckner added 12 and Jihad Ali grabbed 11 rebounds to go along with his nine points. And the play of Marques Johnson shouldn't be overlooked either as he dished out seven assists to just one turnover on the day. George Mason beat Georgia State 66-51 in their lone meeting on January 15th.

(5) Drexel 75, (12) Towson 69

Considering the fact that Towson went into today's game winless in CAA contests this season, many expected Bruiser Flint's Dragons to simply run through the Tigers on their way to a matchup with VCU on Saturday. But that wasn't the case as Pat Kennedy's squad remained competitive throughout, but they couldn't take advantage of an opportunity to tie the game late due in part to some bad foul shooting by Drexel. The Dragons survive with Samme Givens leading the way, scoring 22 points and grabbing 14 rebounds for his 10th double-double of the season. Chris Fouch added 15 points of the bench while CAA All-Rookie Team member Frantz Massenat scored 13 and handed out five assists. Dartaye Ruffin, who had a rough time at the charity stripe late, grabbed 12 rebounds while also scoring eight points. Josh Brown led four Tigers in double figures with 18 points but they were whipped on the boards by a 43-26 margin.

Missouri Valley

(1) Missouri State 58, (8) Southern Illinois 56

Southern Illinois got out of the gates quickly, outscoring the regular season champion Bears 11-3 over the first 2:53 of the game and led 32-24 at the half. But despite those facts and a 56-47 lead with 2:49 remaining, the Salukis went out in heartbreaking fashion as a Kyle Weems basket with 1.4 seconds to go capped an 11-0 run to end the game. Adam Leonard led Missouri State with a game-high 20 points while Weems added 14, making up for a 5-for-18 afternoon from the field with the late-game heroics. Mamadou Seck led SIU with 15 points and 14 rebounds and Kendal Brown-Surles and Justin Bocot scored 11 apiece. Rebounding (38-28 edge) and points from the foul line (15-6 advantage) helped out Cuonzo Martin's club, who has to come out with more energy to start in tomorrow's semifinal against Creighton if they're to get to Sunday's final.

(5) Creighton 70, (4) Northern Iowa 67

The Blue Jays survived some suspect play late, most notably a missed layup that would have sealed the game by Jahenns Manigat, to beat the Panthers in the second quarterfinal of the day. Kwadzo Ahelegbe tried to draw a foul on the final shot of the game but Manigat stayed on the ground, not falling for the shot fake and forcing the senior to put up a challenged shot that fell short. Forwards Doug McDermott and Kenny Lawson, Jr. were the difference for the Blue Jays, with McDermott scoring 16 points (including nine of the first 11) to go along with seven rebounds and Lawson dropped in 18 off the bench. UNI took away the inside play that hurt them in the first half, but all that did was allow the preseason MVC Player of the Year to do damage via Creighton's pick-and-pop game. Antoine Young scored 11 points and racked up seven assists, being every bit the problem for the Panthers that he was in the regular season. Ahelegbe finished with 14 points and four assists, and Anthony James added 10 for UNI.

Southern

UNC Greensboro 71, Davidson 64

To say the least it's a bit weird to talk about Davidson in March with the subject being their loss in the first round of the conference tournament. But that's exactly what happened to Bob McKillop's team, as UNCG sent them home in the first game of the day in Chattanooga. It doesn't help matters when you shoot 24% from the field, as the Wildcats made just 18 of 75 shots on the day. Freshman Trevis Simpson led the Spartans with 15 points and 10 rebounds and teammates Brandon Evans (12) and Kyle Randall (11) each reached double figures as they won their seventh game of the season. Brendan McKillop led Davidson with 14 points and J.P. Kuhlman added 11. Next up for UNC Greensboro is a matchup with the top seed in the North Division, Western Carolina.

Appalachian State 65, Georgia Southern 57

Donald Sims led three Mountaineers in double figures with a game-high 20 points to go along with four rebounds and two assists in the win over Georgia Southern. Neither team shot well from beyond the arc (combined 3-for-19) but Appalachian State scored 27 of their 65 points from the foul line in the win. Ben Drayton III led the Eagles with 16 points but it wasn't enough to prevent the end of their season. Next up for Appalachian State is defending tournament champion Wofford in the second quarterfinal tomorrow.

Tonight's Games

Atlantic Sun Semifinals (ESPN3)
(1) Belmont vs. (5) Mercer
(2) East Tennessee State vs. (6) North Florida

CAA First Round (CAASports.com)
(10) Northeastern vs. (7) Delaware (29-27 Northeastern at halftime)
(11) William & Mary vs. (6) James Madison

Horizon Quarterfinals (ESPN3)
(6) Wright State vs. (3) Cleveland State (31-27 Cleveland State at halftime)
(5) Detroit vs. (4) Valparaiso

MAAC First Round (MAACSports.com)
(8) Niagara vs. (9) Marist
(7) Siena vs. (10) Manhattan

Missouri Valley Quarterfinals (FSN Midwest)
(7) Bradley vs. (2) Wichita State
(6) Evansville vs. (3) Indiana State

Ohio Valley Semifinals (ESPNU)
(4) Tennessee Tech vs. (1) Murray State
(3) Austin Peay vs. (2) Morehead State

Southern Conference First Round (SoConSports.com)
(N6) Samford vs. (S3) Furman
(S5) The Citadel vs. (N4) Elon

WCC First Round (ESPN3)
(8) Loyola Marymount vs. (5) Portland
(7) San Diego vs. (6) Pepperdine

Other Games (regular season)
Brown at Cornell
Princeton at Dartmouth
Penn at Harvard
Yale at Columbia
Akron at Kent State
Ohio at Miami (OH)

HOOPS TALK LIVE SATURDAY 11am-NOON

MAAC Hoops

none

Coach:
Chris Lowery (124-74 at Southern Illinois, 124-74 overall)

Southern Illinois
lost three starters and a key reserve off of a team that was, yet again,
disappointing. However, this could be a case of addition by subtraction. The
Salukis have had success in the not so distant past because of their defense.
That philosophy seemed to disappear over the last couple of seasons and the
success or failure of the 2010-2011 team will depend on their defense.

Key Losses:

F Anthony Booker, G Kevin Dillard, C Nick Evans, G Tony Freeman

Key Newcomers:

Defense is nice,
but somebody has to score and not turn the ball over too. Coach Chris Lowery is
on the hot seat and he went the junior college route to try to bolster his team
immediately. The backcourt gains a point guard in Mykel Cleveland and a shooting
guard in Troy Long. Ernest Watson is a quality small forward and power forward
Mamadou Seck will give the team some much needed depth in the frontcourt. Those
four are all junior college transfers and all four of them will be given every
opportunity to play right away…and in the case of Cleveland, he will almost have
to be ready to take over the point guard position. Redshirt freshman forward
Jordan Myers and guard Diamond Taylor will also suit up for the Salukis after
sitting on the sidelines last season. The only incoming freshman is power
forward Davonte Drinkard.

Backcourt:

Despite all the additions, this is not a team that lacks experienced players to
build around. In fact, this could end up being an extremely deep team. In the
backcourt Justin Bocot, John Freeman and Jack Crowder are among the players who
will battle for starting jobs. Bocot was one of the bright spots on the team
last season and will likely turn into the go-to-scorer for the 2010-2011 squad
after averaging 9.1 points per game a year ago. Freeman, a 6-5 senior, is not
much of a shooter or a scorer, but he is a decent rebounder off the wing and a
tough defender. Crowder never really got an opportunity to show his stuff after
transferring in from the junior college level, but he is a tough wing who can
battle on the glass.

Frontcourt:

Along with Bocot,
senior forward Carlton Fay is the only other returning starter. Fay is a dynamic
scorer who the opposition has to cover both inside and outside. Fay knocked down
38.1 percent of his attempts from long range last year and his offense can
really stretch out the defense. Yet, without an interior scorer, Fay is much
easier to handle. SIU hopes Gene Teague can be that scorer. At 6-9 and 285
pounds, Teague certainly looks the part. As a freshman last season he earned 13
starts and averaged 6.1 points and a team high 4.6 rebounds. And all of that was
in just 17.0 minutes per game. If he can stay on the floor longer, which is a
relatively big if due to conditioning, injury and foul issues, the Salukis may
have found their interior scorer for the next three years.

Who to Watch:

If Teague can clog the lane, the group on the perimeter should get some open
looks. And they have to knock them down. Without Kevin Dillard and Tony Freeman,
that may be an issue. Bocot and Fay will hit their fair share of long balls, but
the key may be the development of sophomore Kendal Brown-Surles. Brown-Surles
started off his collegiate career with a bang, connecting on four of six
three-pointers in the season opener. After that the numbers were not nearly as
impressive. However, he did have a strong finish to the season and could turn
into a fine shooting guard and a more than capable backup point guard.

Final Projection:

Brown-Surles may end up starting at the point if Cleveland is not ready for the
job or some of the other newcomers need to find a spot in the starting lineup.
Southern Illinois certainly needs to find some depth in the frontcourt and some
consistent scorers on the perimeter, but the most important thing is defense.
And Coach Lowery may finally have enough bodies to have the luxury of forcing
his players to play tough defense every trip down the floor. If they do,
Southern Illinois will exceed expectations and get back to the postseason.

MVC Basketball Preview: 2009-10

The MVC race is always up for grabs, and perhaps another
surprise team like UNI lurks. Perhaps no league has as much parity as the
Valley, where even the bottom teams are improved.

MVC Preseason Poll & Awards

ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- The Northern Iowa men's basketball team has been picked to finish first in the Missouri Valley Conference, according to the preseason poll announced today during the league's annual Basketball Media Day.

Northern Iowa, which returns all five starters after sharing the regular-season title with Creighton last year, earned 38 of 39 first-place votes in the survey of league coaches, beat writers, sports information directors and play-by-play men.

Pollsters have accurately predicted the league's regular-season champ only 11 times out of 25 since 1985-86. Two teams have been picked for second place but gone on to take the regular-season crown, Southern Illinois in both 2002-03 and 2006-07.

The preseason poll doesn¹t always match the year-end standings. Last year's Northern Iowa was picked sixth and ended up in a tie for first. The year before that, Drake was picked ninth, only to finish 28-5 and win the league title.

2009-10 MVC Preseason Poll
1. Northern Iowa (38) 389
2. Creighton (1) 336
MVC Preseason Poll & Awards

ST. LOUIS - UNI, which returns all five starters and nine of
10 players from last year’s regular-season co-champ and State Farm MVC
Tournament winner, has been picked to earn the Missouri Valley Conference men’s
basketball title in 2009-10.

The Panthers are hoping the pollsters are correct, although recent history
could suggest otherwise, as only once in the past four years has the pre-season
poll correctly picked the regular-season champ (last year Creighton was picked
to win and shared the regular-season title with UNI, which was picked to finish
sixth.)

The Panthers - also picked to win by The Sporting News College Basketball
Preview, Lindy’s College Basketball Preview, and Athlon Sports College
Basketball Preview - join a small group of defending Missouri Valley men’s
basketball champs to return all five starters.

It marks the second time in league history the Panthers have been pegged as
the preseason favorites. UNI was also picked to win the league in 2005-06. UNI
finished fifth in the conference race in 2005-06, but earned an at-large bid
into the NCAA Tournament.
