SEC Basketball: Fantasy Preview

This is the 5th of six fantasy stats projections for BCS conference starters. One of my favorite series of the year, and a helpful guide when drafting for fantasy college basketball leagues. For an idea of whether I know what I'm talking about, check out last year's SEC Stats Projection (SEC happened to be by far my worst predictions overall). As always, some teams were nailed better then others.. Tennessee was decent, Vanderbilt was particularly bad.

Keep in mind stats are highly dependent on minutes, and freshmen are obviously the hardest to predict. I try to note places below where other starters not listed may emerge or where competition for major minutes exist. Stats are listed by ppg, rpg, and then apg.

SEC

ALABAMA

G Mikhail Torrance - 12, 3, 4
G Senario Hillman - 15, 3, 3
F Tony Mitchell - 10, 6, 2
F JaMychal Green - 14, 8, 1
C Justin Knox - 7, 6, 1

Notes: Hillman improved substantially last season, and could lead the team in scoring this year. Mitchell is a freshman who will contribute immediately. Demetrius Johnson will add productive minutes behind Knox.

ARKANSAS

G Courtney Fortson - 14, 5, 7
G Stefan Welsh - 10, 3, 3
G Rotnei Clarke - 15, 3, 1
F Michael Sanchez - 6, 6, 1
F Michael Washington - 15, 11, 1

Notes: Washington was a pleasant surprise last year, almost doubling my projected 8 ppg. Clarke has the ability to light it up from deep and Arkansas would be better off he took more shots away from Fortson.

AUBURN

G Frankie Sullivan - 11, 3, 2

Notes: As usual, Auburn is a guard-heavy team. Reed took a big step up last year and expect Sullivan to be this year's most improved player after averaging 7.6 ppg last year. Gabriel, a freshman, will battle other newcomers like Rob Chubb for minutes up front.

FLORIDA
G Erving Walker - 9, 3, 2
G Kenny Boynton - 14, 4, 3
F Chandler Parsons - 11, 6, 2
F Dan Werner - 8, 6, 2

Notes: I expected a bigger year from Parsons last year, who has more talent then he's shown. Boynton is a big-time scorer who will be one of the league's most productive newcomers. Vernon Macklin, a Georgetown transfer, will also see important minutes and could add 5 ppg and 5 rpg a game.

GEORGIA
G Dustin Ware - 8, 3, 4

G Travis Leslie - 11, 4, 1
G DeMario Mayfield - 7, 3, 1

F Albert Jackson - 6, 6, 1
F Howard (Trey) Thompkins - 17, 9, 1

Notes: Thompkins is the lone SEC-quality player on the roster and should have opportunity to fill up the stat-sheet. Mayfield is a freshman, and probably the best of weak options on the wing. Leslie has potential to be a minor surprise.

KENTUCKY

G Eric Bledsoe - 9, 4, 4

Notes: Miller's #'s were disappointing as a freshman, but he should thrive with so many weapons around him. Wall, Bledsoe, and Cousins are all freshman. Last year, Perry Stevenson saw 28 mpg, but his time will be severely reduced due to all the newcomers.

LSU

Notes: Mitchell and Spencer are the only players on the roster with any real experience. Dotson is a freshman who might be the 3rd most talented player on the team, but will take time to develop. Senior Alex Farrer may get minutes over Bass, but don't expect much production from him.

MISSISSIPPI STATE

Notes: Besides the #'s listed, Varnado also blocks a ton of shots and shoots a high % from the floor. Renardo Sidney is awaiting his NCAA fate, but would be expected to see 25+ mpg if eligibile. Kodi Augustus is a highly efficient reserve forward who would probably score double-digits ppg if he was on a team like LSU.

OLE MISS

SOUTH CAROLINA

Notes: The Gamecocks return 4 of 5 starters, and Raley-Ross (the new starter) played 25 mpg last year as well, so we know what to expect from these guys. Evaldas Baniulis averaged 6 ppg as a sharp-shooter off the bench and could score 10 ppg if given enough minutes.

TENNESSEE

Notes: All of these guys are holdovers from last year. Hopson, who had a rather blah freshman year (9.2 ppg on 42.8% shooting), has the best chance to take a noticeable step up. Brian Williams is a servicable reserve forward who should contribute 7 ppg and 6 rpg.

VANDERBILT

Wisconsin was solid, Purdue rather weak.. and I strongly overrated BJ Mullens.

This is the 2nd of six fantasy stats projections of BCS conference starters. One of my favorite series of the year, and a helpful guide when drafting for fantasy college basketball leagues. For an idea of whether I know what I'm talking about, check out last year's Big 12 Stats Projection. As always, some teams were nailed better then others.. Baylor & Texas A&M were rock solid, Kansas though was particularly weak (underestimated both Collins & Aldrich.)

Keep in mind stats are highly dependent on minutes, and freshmen are obviously the hardest to predict. I try to note places below where other starters not listed may emerge. Stats are listed by ppg, rpg, and then apg.

BIG 12

BAYLOR

G Tweety Carter - 13, 4, 4
G LaceDarius Dunn - 17, 5, 1

G Nolan Dennis - 10, 3, 2

Notes: I don't expect Dunn's ppg to rise that much as Baylor should be a more well-rounded team this year. Udoh never averaged more than 6 ppg at Michigan, but should do better than that.

COLORADO

Notes: Brackins put up 20 ppg last year, but I expect his scoring to come down a bit as his surrounding cast improves. Gilstrap, a Juco transfer, could put up some of the best numbers from any newcomer.

KANSAS

Notes: Xavier Henry is the big-time recruit who should help take the pressure off of Collins to score. Markieff Morris should also put up worthwhile numbers off the bench.

KANSAS STATE

F Dominque Sutton - 9, 6, 1

Notes: Samuels could be the team's most improved fantasy performer from last year. Judge is a heralded freshman, but don't expect him to blow up the stat sheet.

MISSOURI

F Keith Ramsey - 7, 5, 1
F Justin Safford - 9, 6, 2

Notes: English's production could double now that he moves into the starting 5. Safford showed off his range in the post-season, but he'll certainly have his off nights.

NEBRASKA

Notes: Anderson's scoring has actually dropped each year, but I expect a bounce-back senior campaign. Niemann is a newcomer who sat out last season, but will be expected to contribute from day one.

OKLAHOMA

G Tony Crocker - 12, 4, 2

Notes: Warren should be helped by the addition of Mason-Griffin, a pg who can distribute the ball. "Tiny" Gallon has huge potential, but might not hit his statistical stide until next season.

OKLAHOMA STATE

G James Anderson - 20, 6, 3
G Obi Muonelo - 15, 8, 2
F - Marshall Moses - 10, 7, 1

F - Matt Pilgrim - 8, 5, 1

Notes: Eaton's departure leaves a big hole at PG. Penn is not a lock starter, as he'll face competition for those minutes. Without many other options, Anderson could be the Big 12's scoring leader.

TEXAS

Notes: Justin Mason, who started last year, could return to the starting lineup, relegating Johnson to the 6th man role. Texas has another viable fantasy option off the bench in Jordan Hamilton, a wing who can really score the ball.

TEXAS A&M

F David Loubeau - 10, 7, 1

Notes: Loubeau only played 14 mpg last year, but should see double the time now that Elonu moves on. Davis' numbers should be right there with just about every big-man in the league besides Aldrich.

TEXAS TECH

Notes: Reese is a Juco newcomer known for scoring the ball. Despite a lack of notoriety, Roberson's numbers are some of the best you'll find in the backcourt.

Notes: Maryland has some options in its starting 5. Jordan Williams could usurp fellow freshman Padgett from the post. Eric Hayes and Cliff Tucker will also push for minutes, and Mosley may very well be the 6th man.

Miami

Notes: Collins has the potential to put up 15 & 10 if he sees 30+ mpg. The transfer Grant will start at the 1, although the 2 spot is not guaranteed to go to Scott.

Notes: Smith is the only player to get excited about in terms of fantasy. It's conceivable he even exceeds these projections. The only other guard to see major minutes will be Farnold Degand.

North Carolina

Notes: Dexter Strickland will also see major minutes at guard and could approach double-digit scoring as well so long as he gets 20+ mpg. You also have the talented Tyler Zeller at forward, who would score 12+ ppg on most teams easy.

Virginia

G Sylven Landesberg - 17, 8, 4

Notes: As good as Landesberg is, his stats might not improve from last year because Virginia is expected to play at a slower pace. Assane Sene is an improving option at center, and will haul in boards and block shots if given minutes.

Virginia Tech

G Malcolm Delaney - 18, 5, 6
G Dorenzo Hudson - 8, 3, 1
F JT Thompson - 10, 5, 1

Notes: Delaney averaged 5 ppg more than I predicted last year, and could conceivably approach 20 ppg this season. I overestimated Davila last year, and perhaps am doing the same again.

Wake Forest

F Al-Farouq Aminu - 16, 9, 2
F Ari Stewart - 10, 4, 2

Notes: Smith hasn't come close to matching his freshman year assist totals, but he could bounce back in that category this year. The freshman Stewart is the big wild card here, as his minutes could be lost to the likes of Tony Woods or Ty Walker.

2009 NCAA Tournament: Top 65 Players

With 65 teams in the modern NCAAs, it seems fitting to put out a list of the Top 65 Players in the 2009 NCAA Tournament. This is not a pure fantasy stats ranking, but a more standard cream of the crop ranking. Just about all the big names in college basketball made this year's Dance, and limiting the ranking to just 65 players was a hard task. I can think of a dozen relatively talented and recognized players who didn't even fit in the Next in Line section. CollegeHoops.net's Top 100 Players Ranking was used as a base for the list, though unlike that staff ranking, what you see here is solely my opinion.

Rules:

- CHN Weekly Pickem is set up to be as simple as possible. Just pick games straight up and get points for each win. No gimmicks. No cost.

- Points are compiled weekly, and then each week's total is aggregated as the season continues. If you miss a week, don't worry, you can always return later. Plus, you'll get rewarded for individual week success.
