Saturday Recap: Five Ranked Teams Fall to Unranked Opponents

The first Saturday of the new year proved to be far more exciting than anticipated, much to the detriment of ranked teams who took their show on the road. Removing #7 Missouri and #20 Marquette, who both lost on the road to ranked opponents (more on both of those games below), five ranked teams lost to unranked opponents with four of the losses coming on the road. The Big East provided the most intrigue, with #8 Connecticut and #9 Georgetown falling on the road while #10 Louisville lost in double overtime at home. So which of the three defeats is most concerning? That's likely a toss-up between the Huskies and Cardinals.

Connecticut lost at Rutgers, who already owned a win at The RAC over then-#10 Florida, 67-60 with Eli Carter leading the Scarlet Knights with 19 points. It was a Saturday night to forget for Jeremy Lamb, who scored just eight points before fouling out. With the preseason All-America dealing with foul trouble for much of the night, Rutgers head coach Mike Rice was able to go with a zone defense to take advantage of the Huskies' issues in dealing with zones.

While UConn's 36.5% shooting from deep on the season isn't a great number it's definitely better than the 4-for-19 performance they put up against Rutgers. But of more concern than the lack of perimeter shooting is the lack of leadership and toughness for this group, something that was lost with the departure of Kemba Walker. And it's a sore subject for head coach Jim Calhoun, who returned to the bench after missing the last three games due to an NCAA suspension.

"There's not a lack of leadership, there's none," said Calhoun. Short, and to the point.

As for Louisville, their issues of running a half-court offense with cohesion has been well documented, and for that reason it's reasonable to say that Rick Pitino's team was given too much credit earlier in the season. Eric Atkins' shot with 17 seconds remaining gave the Fighting Irish a 65-63 lead and his two free throws in the final seconds of the second overtime sealed the 67-65 victory, giving Notre Dame their first win in the Commonwealth of Kentucky until 1980.

Louisville shot much better from the field, making 42.3% of their shots compared to 31.7% for Notre Dame. But when you hand the ball over 18 times, allowing Notre Dame to score 16 points off of turnovers, there's a good chance that the outcome won't be a positive one. The Cardinals now already have two home conference losses, and that's definitely not a good spot to be in if they're to contend for a Big East title.

"Hard fought game, but if you break it down, they made their free throws and we didn't," said Pitino. "To lose two home games in the Big East with the type of schedule we have is very destructive to say the least."

The other two losses to unranked opponents came in the SEC, with Florida kicking off the crazy day with a 67-56 loss to Tennessee (more on that below) and #15 Mississippi State getting lit up at Arkansas 98-88. The Bulldogs weren't much more than a sieve defensively, allowing the Razorbacks to shoot 56.5% from the field for the game. Rick Stansbury's team seemed to be in solid shape at the half, trailing by just six (43-37) despite turning the ball over eleven times to just two for Arkansas.

But that optimism was misguided as the Bulldogs allowed 55 points in the final 20 minutes with the Hogs making 67.9% of their shots. Julysses Nobles and B.J. Young scored 24 points apiece to lead Arkansas, who finished with five players in double figures, and they were also aided by the fact that three players scored 63 of Mississippi State's 88 points. Arnett Moultrie scored just nine but did grab ten rebounds before fouling out with over six minutes remaining, but his fifth foul essentially signaled the end of the game for Mississippi State. The lesson the Bulldogs learned was similar to that learned by the other ranked teams to fall: anyone can fall on any given day.

Other Notable Happenings

1. Kansas State takes advantage of #7 Missouri's lack of interior depth and hands the Tigers their first loss.
There were certainly concerns about how Frank Haith's team would deal
with bigger teams as the season wore on, as Missouri has just seven
scholarship players and two true frontcourt players. And at the "Octagon
of Doom" the Tigers got their first glimpse of how difficult things
could be, especially if their perimeter scorers aren't as productive as
expected. Missouri shot just 32.7% from the field and were out-rebounded
39-25 by #23 Kansas State in the Wildcats' 75-59 victory, suffering
their first loss of the season.

It didn't help matters that
starting forward Ricardo Ratliffe played just 14 foul-riddled minutes,
scoring two points and grabbing one rebounds. The Tigers can't afford
that level of production when their guards are on, much less when Phil
Pressey misses all six of his shots from the field and the team shoots
7-for-24 from three. Rodney McGruder led K-State with 20 points and as a
team the Wildcats assisted on 18 of their 28 field goals, resulting in
an efficiency (111.9) 21 points higher than what Missouri opponents
averaged on the season.

2. Syracuse runs out to a big lead and hangs on to beat Marquette in the Carrier Dome.
Thanks to a 23-1 run in the first half to turn a 12-11 lead into a
seemingly insurmountable 35-12 edge, top-ranked Syracuse seemed to be
well on their way to an emphatic victory over #20 Marquette. But Jim
Boeheim's team apparently left their intensity in the locker room, as
they came out of halftime flat while Buzz Williams' team displayed the
fight expected of his program. Marquette would eventually pull to within
two points (59-57) but could get no closer as the Orange would
eventually win 73-66, moving to 17-0 and by the end of the night sitting
alone atop the Big East standings.

Marquette could hit nothing
in the first half, shooting 30% from the field and going 1-for-7 from
beyond the arc. But led by Darius Johnson-Odom (19 points), Jae Crowder
(15 points, seven rebounds) and Junior Cadougan (10 points, five
assists) the Golden Eagles attacked the inside of the Syracuse zone,
resulting in quality looks that were few and far between in the first
half. But with Kris Joseph scoring 17 points and reserves C.J. Fair and
Dion Waiters combining to score 25 points Syracuse was able to sew
things up late, and while they weren't as efficient as usual the Orange
did assists on 19 of 24 made baskets. While the landscape beneath them
is too muddled to make sense of, it's pretty clear that the Orange are
the class of the Big East.

3. Florida has some things to work on defensively if they're to be a factor come March.
The first thing that will stick out in#13 Florida's 67-56 loss at
Tennessee is likely the fact that they scored just 56 points, shooting
35.7% from the field in doing so. But what should really be taken out of
the defeat is their play on the defensive end of the floor, because
despite the struggles offensively Billy Donovan's team won't lack for
scoring options. Simply put, can Florida get the stops needed when the
possessions become even bigger in March? If they're going to do so some
things will need to change, with one being the lack of ball pressure on
the perimeter. The issue against Tennessee wasn't about what the
Volunteers could do off the dribble but rather the lack of pressure on
entry passes.

On multiple occasions the lack of pressure on
passers allowed a Jeronne Maymon (12 points, seven rebounds) or Kenny
Hall (13 points, five rebounds) the time to walk their man up the lane
and out of prime defensive position. If Florida couldn't get away with
this against Tennessee, what are they going to do in their two meetings
with Kentucky? And it's not out of the realm of possibility that a team
like Alabama (or even Mississippi State) that has multiple big men could
give them a hard time inside. The Vols entered Saturday's game scoring
33% of their points from three, but they didn't have to do that as the
paint was open for business. Florida can't allow that to happen if
they're to reach their full potential, prolific offense or not.

4. George Mason beats Georgia State to take over sole possession of first place in the CAA.
In prior seasons the three-game stretch for Georgia State of
Drexel/VCU/George Mason would elicit bets of what the Panthers' combined
margin of defeat would be. To say the least things have changed under
Ron Hunter, as they'd won the first two games of that stretch going into
Saturday's showdown with the Patriots for sole possession of first
place in the CAA. But despite Ryan Pearson failing to make a single
field goal it was George Mason who was able to make the key baskets late
on their way to the 61-56 win. Neither team shot well from the field
and George Mason turned the ball over 19 times, but the deciding factor
was the charity stripe.

George Mason, who shot 67.3% from the
line on the season, made 18 of 21 on Saturday night and outscored the
Panthers by eight in that department. Vertail Vaughns (17 points) and
Mike Morrison (14 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks) more than made up
for Pearson's 0-for-4 night, while the Georgia State combo of Josh
Micheaux and Devonta White shot a combined 3-for-15 (they entered the
game averaging a combined 20.2 points/game). Jihad Ali led Georgia State
with 19 points, and while they didn't win the Panthers have the look of
a team that could hang around the race throughout the season. But they
didn't have enough down the stretch, allowing the Patriots to take
control of the driver's seat a quarter of the way through CAA play.

5. Oral Roberts blows out South Dakota State and moves to 6-0 in the Summit League.
The matchup between the Golden Eagles and Jackrabbits was anticipated by
some due to not only the matchup of early Summit League POY
frontrunners Dominique Morrison (ORU) and Nate Wolters (SDSU) (Oakland's
Reggie Hamilton will also figure in the discussion). But they game
didn't live up to that, much to the detriment of the Jackrabbits, who
fell 97-75 in Tulsa. Morrison was outstanding as he finished with 38
points and seven rebounds, but he had plenty of help as Steven Roundtree
scored 17 off the bench and Michael Craion and Warren Niles scored 15
apiece.

Wolters led five SDSU players in double figures with 22
points to go along with six assists, but the Jackrabbits' biggest
problem was they they couldn't stop the Golden Eagles. ORU shot 60.7%
from the field on the night and 67.5% from two while also making ten of
twenty-one from beyond the arc, and when ORU's got it rolling like that
they're extremely difficult to beat at the Mabee Center. Oral Roberts
finished the game with an offensive efficiency of 154.0, scoring 1.5
points/possession on the night. To say the least South Dakota State will
do their best to make sure that doesn't happen in the rematch on
February 2nd.

Quick Hitters

1. Saturday marked the first step towards another March in which Virginia Tech
is once again discussed as a bubble team, with the Hokies losing at
Wake Forest 58-55. Erick Green was solid for the Hokies, finishing with
19 points, seven rebounds and six assists, but more is needed from
Dorenzo Hudson (4-13, eight points) if they're to be a tournament team.

2. Entering the week with an 0-2 league record, UCLA
couldn't afford anything less than a split with the Arizona schools if
they wanted to be a contender in the Pac-12 race. Ben Howland's squad
did better than that, wrapping up a sweep with a 75-58 win over Arizona
State. Travis Wear scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds and
Joshua Smith added 18 off the bench.

3. Few people gave Colorado
a shot at being in first place in the Pac-12 at this point in the
season, but there they sit after sweeping the Washington schools this
weekend. A big reason why: defense. In their 71-60 win over Washington
State, Colorado limited the Cougars to 36.5% shooting and none of their
three league opponents have shot over 40% from the field. Also in
forward Andre Roberson, Tad Boyle's got one of the most underrated
players in the country.

4. Of the four teams tied for first place in the MVC the most surprising has to be Illinois State, who beat Evansville 75-73 on a miraculous
shot by Jackie Carmichael. Carmichael, who finished with 17 points,
seven rebounds and four blocks, banked in his first career three-pointer
as time expired to win the game. We'll find out how much staying power
the Redbirds have immediately too, as they visit Wichita State and host
Creighton in their next two games.

5. In a matchup of teams undefeated in SoCon play Davidson
shot 60% from the field and made 11 three-pointers in their 96-74 win
over Georgia Southern. Jake Cohen (29 points) and De'Mon Brooks (24
points) combined to score 53 points with Cohen also grabbing 12 rebounds
in the victory.

6. There was also a matchup of undefeated teams
in the NEC, and that game wasn't particularly close either. Ken Horton
scored 21 points and grabbed ten rebounds while Robbie Ptacek scored 24
points and Kyle Vinales 18 in Central Connecticut State's 68-53 win over Robert Morris. Robert Morris shot just 30.3% from the field and turned the ball over 15 times in defeat.

7. Back in the ACC, Florida State
laid a serious egg in their ACC opener as they fell 79-59 at Clemson.
Not only did the Seminoles struggle offensively, shooting 35.5% and
turning the ball over 15 times, but they also allowed the Tigers to
shoot 60% from two and 49% overall. Leonard Hamilton's team can
ill-afford the defensive breakdowns they had on Saturday if they're
going to be a tournament team.

8. Both Temple and Saint Joseph's
dropped conference games at home on Saturday, with Dayton pulling away
late to be at the Owls 87-77 and Charlotte shocking the Hawks 57-52.
Archie Miller's Flyers picked up a key resume-building win, and
Charlotte's victory was a good step for Alan Major as he looks to
rebuild that program.

9. Bowling Green also provided a
surprise in their MAC opener as they beat Ohio 67-57. Jordon Crawford
led the way, scoring 16 points to go along with five assists, four
rebounds and two steals. BGSU turned the ball over 20 times (Crawford:
six turnovers) but the Bobcats shot 4-for-20 from three, alliowing the
home team to lock up the victory.

10. And in terms of a possible changing of the guard Nevada
may have struck the biggest blow, handing Utah State their first
conference home loss since 2007 by the final score of 78-71. Deonte
Burton, who finished with 25 points and five assists, provided the
dagger in the form of a four-point play with 37 seconds remaining while
Dario Hunt scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.

Five (plus one) Notable Performances

1. F Doug McDermott (Creighton)
44 points (18-23 FG), eight rebounds and two assists in the Bluejays' 92-83 win at Bradley.

2. F Dominique Morrison (Oral Roberts)
38 points (11-15 FG), seven rebounds and two assists in the Golden Eagles' 97-75 win over South Dakota State.

3. G Damian Lillard (Weber State)
38 points (8-14 3PT), five rebounds and five assists in the Wildcats' 88-81 win at Portland State.

4. G Isaiah Canaan (Murray State)
35 points (7-8 3PT), five assists and two rebounds in the Racers' 87-75 win at Austin Peay.

5. F Kevin Jones (West Virginia)
22 points (8-12 FG) and 16 rebounds in the Mountaineers' 74-62 win over #9 Georgetown.

Plus One: F Royce White (Iowa State)
18 rebounds, ten points and ten assists in the Cyclones' 74-50 demolition of Texas A&M in College Station.

Game of the Day: Stanford 103, Oregon State 101 (4 OT)
If you missed this one late that's too bad, because the Cardinal and Beavers combined to play an instant classic. The game didn't truly take off until the final moments of regulation, as Stanford's game-winning basket was ruled to have come after time expired. Stanford would eventually win as Roberto Nelson's three-point attempt as time expired missed the mark. Chasson Randle led six Stanford players in double figures with 24 points off the bench while Nelson and Jared Cunningham led six Oregon State players in double figures with 19 apiece.

Thursday Recap: Can Pittsburgh or Villanova Turn Things Around?

To understand the funk that Pittsburgh and Villanova are currently mired in, it may take this fact about the two teams they lost to on Thursday night. This is the first time as members of the Big East (since 2005-06 for both) that DePaul and USF have won conference games on the same night. Yes, allowing that to sink in underlines the gravity of the situation for both the Panthers and Wildcats, as both teams are in need of some answers at this point in time.

Pittsburgh, once again playing without point guard Tray Woodall, had their biggest issues show up on the defensive end in their 84-81 loss to the Blue Demons. DePaul scored 53 points and shot 59.4% from the floor in the second half to make their comeback, and point guard Brandon Young was near unstoppable with 26 points, six assists, five steals and four rebounds with just one turnover. Pittsburgh held a 50-32 edge on the boards, but when a team makes 10 of 22 from beyond the arc as DePaul did, winning on the road becomes that much tougher.

Even with all five starters scoring in double figures (Talib Zanna led the way with 16), the Panthers were in trouble for much of the night due to the issues defensively to go along with some bad decisions late. Ashton Gibbs' decision to give the foul on Young as the sophomore was attempting what would be the game-winning layup with 17.2 seconds remaining may be the most glaring mistake, but there were issues in terms of shot selection and some costly turnovers as well.

As for Villanova the situation may be even worse, as Jay Wright's team is extremely young in key areas. And youth doesn't always have to be measured by years; lack of familiarity with a new role can be just as damning for a team and that could be the case for Maalik Wayns and Dominic Cheek.

Cheek now has to be a feature option for the Wildcats offensively, and while he had a key role last season Wayns is being entrusted with the task of running the show without a Corey Fisher alongside him. Other than these two and Mouphtaou Yarou, Villanova is relying a lot on their youngsters, and the 74-57 loss to USF further exposed the fact that they're not ready for the Big East yet.

While Villanova was expected to be a bubble team this season, the expectations were much higher for Pittsburgh. If anything the impact of the loss of players such as Fisher and Corey Stokes (Villanova), and Brad Wanamaker, Gary McGhee and Gilbert Brown (Pittsburgh) was underestimated by those outside of the respective programs.

While many are quick to point out the fact that leagues can eat their young in conference play, it can also expose older players as well. There's still time for both teams to turn things around, but Pittsburgh and Villanova both understand that they need to do so quickly.

Other Notable Happenings

1. Indiana hangs on to beat Michigan and remain undefeated at home.
The battle between the Hoosiers and Wolverines lived up to the pregame expectations, but at the end of the contest Indiana's starting frontcourt and Victor Oladipo's defense made the difference in the 73-71 win. Christian Watford was a matchup nightmare for Michigan, scoring 25 points to go along with seven rebounds and four assists, and Cody Zeller added 18, four rebounds and two blocks. By comparison, the Michigan starting frontcourt of Jordan Morgan (12 points, nine rebounds) and Evan Smotrycz (eight points) was solid but didn't have a similar impact.

As a team the Hoosiers shot 55.1% from the field and finished with an effective field goal percentage of 62.2%, well above what Michigan allowed entering the game (47.1%). Another area in which Indiana held their own was three-point shooting. Michigan did make ten, with Stu Douglass making three, but they needed twenty-four attempts to do so while Indiana made seven of their eleven attempts.

But back to Oladipo, who was given the responsibility of defending Tim Hardaway Jr. for much of the night. Hardaway Jr. led Michigan with 19 points, but he needed 19 shot attempts to do so (0-for-7 3PT). Oladipo didn't shoot well himself (2-for-10, five points) but that didn't stop him from taking care of business on the other end. There's also the matter of what Indiana's backcourt was able to do with Michigan freshman Trey Burke, who scored ten points on 4-for-15 shooting. Indiana's offense will get the headlines in many circles, but don't ignore their effort defensively.

2. Good luck making any sense of the Pac-12 this season.
Two happenings on Thursday sum up the conference: Utah won, and so did Arizona State with just six scholarship players after having to suspend three. Yeah, it's going to be a wacky year in the Pac-12, and that's not a good thing for a league that put together a 1-24 record against RPI Top 50 teams in non-conference play. My question on Twitter was a simple one, but one without a clear answer at this point in time. With so many meager non-conference resumes it may take at least 12 league wins to be a seriously discussed at-large candidate, but who can accomplish that in this conference?

The quick responses would likely yield Arizona, California and maybe Washington, but all three went on the road and lost on Thursday. Stanford? They fell at Oregon, who owns one of the two wins for road teams in the first week-plus of conference play (at Washington State last week). Oregon State, who went 0-2 against the Washington schools last week, could also be an option given their talent. But the fact that there are so many question marks is a bad thing for the Pac-12 in terms of their prospects come Selection Sunday.

Just one team remains undefeated in conference play: Colorado, who whipped the Huskies 87-69 in Boulder. But given the way things have played out thus far, the Buffaloes will likely fall against Washington State. One-bid league? Never thought it would be a serious possibility, but that could very well be the reality if a couple of teams don't rise above the rest of the conference.

3. Penn State hands Purdue a 20-point loss for their first Big Ten win of the season.
Patrick Chambers' Nittany Lions have taken their lumps, which was expected to happen given the major personnel losses from last season's NCAA Tournament team. But they gave a serious lump to Purdue on Thursday night, leading from start to finish in a 65-45 romp in Happy Valley. As a team the Boilermakers shot just 31.9% for the game, and outside of Robbie Hummel (14 points, five rebounds) Purdue starters shot 5-for-22 on the night. Tim Frazier played well for Penn State, finishing with 15 points, nine assists and five rebounds, but he wasn't the star as Billy Oliver knocked down seven of eleven three-pointers to score a game-high 21 points.

The 6'8" forward shoots 37% from beyond the arc, but this was quite the explosion for a player who had made three or more from deep in just three games this season. Purdue entered the contest with every opportunity to take care of business as a team hoping to contend for a conference title would, and they came out flat. Sometimes it takes getting drilled to remember that you can't get away with such starts.

Quick Hitters

1. No sequence summed up the night better than Louisiana-Lafayette playing the final seconds of overtime against Western Kentucky with six players on the floor. Yes, six. After nearly turning the ball over Elfrid Payton scored a layup that gave the Ragin' Cajuns a 72-70 win. According to the rules there was no way for the officials, who missed the error coming out of the timeout, to review the play and assess a technical foul (which should have been the call to begin with). There's also no way for the Sun Belt to go back and replay the final seconds, meaning that the Hilltoppers are out of luck.

2. Also in the Sun Belt, keep an eye on North Texas especially with Tony Mitchell now in the fold. Mitchell led the Mean Green to a 78-73 overtime win at South Alabama with 34 points and 16 rebounds, and if this is a harbinger of things to come this is a team that can contend to win the conference.

3. Manhattan was just seconds away from their third MAAC win, but a Dylon Cormier three from the corner gave Loyola (MD) the 61-60 win in Baltimore. Cormier was one of three Greyhounds to score 11 points while Erik Etherly added eight points, seven assists and six rebounds. George Beamon led the Jaspers with 18 points, six rebounds and four blocked shots.

4. Glen Braica's St. Francis (NY) Terriers moved to 2-1 in NEC play, beating Quinnipiac 73-72 in Brooklyn. The Terriers, who were led by Stefan Perunicic (21 points), likely won't be a contender for the league title but games like this make the difference between hosting and going on the road in the quarterfinals of the NEC Tournament. Good win for the Terriers.

5. Congratulations are in order for the Hartford Hawks, who picked up their first win of the season. Andres Torres scored 27 points and grabbed six rebounds as the Hawks beat New Hampshire 56-49 in West Hartford.

6. Wofford may not be one of the teams discussed as a contender in the SoCon, but the defending champs aren't in the business of conceding anything. Karl Cochran led four starters in double figures with 21 points as the Terriers beat College of Charleston 75-58 to move to 2-1 in league play. The Cougars made just 34.4% of their two-point shots on the night as Wofford did a good job of limiting their quality looks.

7. In the Big West, UCSB sent a message to Cal-State Fullerton in the form of a 77-64 win in their first home game since November 30th. Orlando Johnson scored 23 points and James Nunnally 18 as the Gauchos remained undefeated in league play while handing the Titans their first Big West loss. Fullerton will still be a factor in the race, but until further notice it's safe to say that UCSB and Long Beach State are the best bets to win the league.

Three Notable Performances

1. F Tony Mitchell (North Texas)
34 points and 16 rebounds in the Mean Green's 78-73 overtime win at South Alabama.

2. F Jamal Olasewere (Long Island)
29 points and 12 rebounds in the Blackbirds' 87-81 win at Sacred Heart.

3. F Rob Jones (Saint Mary's)
31 points, 12 rebounds and three steals in the Gaels' 78-72 win at San Diego.

Thursday's Preview: #13 Michigan at #12 Indiana

There's just one game between Top 25 teams on the schedule tonight, and it should be a good matchup of teams looking to further cement themselves as Big Ten title contenders. #12 Indiana (13-1) is 10-0 at Assembly Hall this season, and their wins over Kentucky and Ohio State are the most impressive pair of victories that any team in America can claim.

But #13 Michigan (12-2) offers up a challenge unlike either of those contests for Tom Crean's team due to the system that John Beilein runs. Indiana is familiar with what the Wolverines like to do but that doesn't make the task any easier, as the Wolverines have adjusted well to life without Darius Morris.

A big reason why: freshman point guard Trey Burke. Burke (14.0 ppg, 5.0 apg) has done a good job of balancing his ability to score with the need to get others involved. Of course in Michigan's system up to four players on the court can handle the basketball at any given time, so this helps out some. But Burke could easily get overly aggressive and try to force things, but he hasn't done that and the Wolverines have benefitted greatily.

Tim Hardaway Jr. (15.6 ppg, 2.8 apg) is the go-to offensive option when considering pure scoring ability, but Michigan has six players averaging at least seven points per game. That will be the challenge that Indiana will have to deal with, and it's a task they haven't been faced with on many occasions this season. The Hoosiers will need to remain honest defensively not just because of that balance but also the fact that Michigan is so reliant on the three-point shot, scoring 36.5% of their points from deep (2nd in the Big Ten behind Northwestern).

Indiana's opponents have scored just 22.5% of their points from beyond the arc, and Indiana has limited teams to 31.1% shooting from three. One guard who will have a big impact on the perimeter defense for Indiana is sophomore Victor Oladipo (12.2 ppg, 5.4 rpg), who ranks among the best defenders in the Big Ten. One would think that he would match up with Hardaway Jr. tonight, but with guards such as Stu Douglass and Zack Novak also at Beilein's disposal all of the Indiana guards will need to be at their best defensively.

The Hoosiers have a slight edge in the frontcourt, with freshman Cody Zeller (14.2 ppg, 6.7 rpg) and senior Christian Watford (12.9 ppg, 5.5 rpg) leading the way. Zeller has been a steady offensive force inside for the Hoosiers, which has allowed Watford to play more on the perimeter in what is a more comfortable spot for him. Watford knocked down the game-winning three against Kentucky and he's been playing more confidently all season long.

Michigan counters with Evan Smotrycz (10.9 ppg, 7.1 rpg) and Jordan Morgan (7.3 ppg, 5.1 rpg), but they need more consistent play from Morgan if they're to be a contender for a Big Ten title. Morgan's scored in double figures in just two of Michigan's last nine games but to be fair he did grab 12 rebounds in the win over Minnesota. Smotrycz has the ablity to step out and knock down perimeter shots, as he's hit 54.5% of his three-point attempts.

On the glass these two teams are about even but Indiana's been the more efficient offensive team, likely a byproduct of Michigan's reliance on the perimeter shot. Jordan Hulls and Verdell Jones III will be players that Michigan will need to account for defensively, and the fact that Indiana forces an average of 17 turnovers per game should also be a concern. The winner will have to be considered a Big Ten title contender after tonight.

Two teams that need wins in a big way will also be on display tonight, as Pittsburgh visits DePaul and UCLA hosts Arizona. Tray Woodall likely will not play for the Panthers due to injury, which place more responsibility on the shoulders of Ashton Gibbs not to mention freshman guard John Johnson. But if Nasir Robinson, Lamar Patterson and Dante Taylor can step up the Panthers should be in decent shape. The key against the Blue Demons: be smart with the basketball. Oliver Purnell's team will want to speed things up to an uncomfortable tempo, and in Cleveland Melvin they've got one of the better players in the Big East.

As for UCLA, it's tough to figure out if the Bruins have the pieces required to be a factor in the Pac-12 despite the poor nature of that conference. Joshua Smith can be a factor when he wants to be, but against Arizona's quick frontcourt the sophomore could get exposed in a big way if he isn't thoroughly invested in the action. Also of note will be the maturation of Arizona's young guards especially Nick Johnson, who would likely be the early favorite for Pac-12 Rookie if the Year honors if not for Washington's Tony Wroten.

In the CAA, George Mason visits ODU in a key matchup for both teams if they're going to contend for the regular season crown. Paul Hewitt's team is definitely talented with the likes of Mike Morrison and Ryan Pearson, but for whatever reason the Patriots tend to make games far more difficult that they should be. That could be a recipe for disaster against the Monarchs, given how tough Blaine Taylor's teams can be defensively.

BYU's trip to LA to take on Loyola Marymount can be a tricky game for the Cougars simply for the fact that you never know which LMU team will show up. But it's tough to see the Lions being able to matchup up with Brandon Davies and company in the frontcourt, which could mean a long night for the home team.

There's also a big game in the Big Sky with Weber State visiting Eastern Washington. The Eagles have been one of the best teams in the country at taking care of the basketball, and Colin Chiverton and company will need to continue that if they're to beat Damian Lillard and company.

And in the MAAC two teams who hope to fit in right behind Iona and Fairfield match up in Baltimore, as Manhattan visits Loyola (MD). Steve Masiello's done a very good job with the Jaspers in his first season at the helm, but keep in mind that Marist won their two December league games last season and still finished in the bottom half of the league.

Saturday Preview: #4 Louisville at #3 Kentucky

The final day of 2011 features one of the most anticipated games of the college basketball season, a rivalry game that captivates an entire state and is one of the best games in college basketball. #4 Louisville (12-1), fresh off of a lost to Georgetown in their Big East opener, visits #3 Kentucky (12-1) in what should be a spirited battle at Rupp Arena. The Cardinals have played just one road game this season but it was also one of their best efforts as they won at Butler without the then-injured Peyton Siva. Kentucky's lone defeat also came at the hands of a ranked team, as the Wildcats fell at the buzzer at Indiana.

One player who will definitely be a focus on Saturday is Kentucky sophomore forward Terrence Jones (12.1 ppg, 6.2 rpg), whose scoring and rebounding averages are down from a season ago. But that isn't as big a deal as the last five games for Jones, as he missed two of them with a dislocated finger. In the other three games he scored a combined 13 points, and Jones also turned the ball over six times in the loss at Indiana. John Calipari has other players to call on up front, but that doesn't mean that the Wildcats want to find out (again) if they can win a big game without Jones being productive.

Also inside for Kentucky is big man Anthony Davis (11.6 ppg, 10.2 rpg, 4.3 bpg), who is one of the toughest matchup in America due to his versatility. Davis is 6'10" but he can defend on the perimeter, as evidenced by his many blocks of three-point attempts. A virtual lock to be a lottery pick whenever he leaves Lexington, Davis runs the floor extremely well and has a good motor to go along with his many skills. Also of importance for Kentucky is Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (13.5 ppg, 6.8 rpg, 2.2 apg), a wing who simply does whatever it takes to win. He's been the leader for this group, organizing the now-famous early morning workouts many team members now take part in.

Louisville will counter with one of the most improved big men in the country in Gorgui Dieng (10.5 ppg, 10.0 rpg, 2.8 bpg), who has gone from a player Rick Pitino could only call on for spot duty to one of the coach's most important players. Dieng's most effective around the basket, so it's going to be interesting to see how he deals with Kentucky's mobile big men. Freshman Chane Behanan (8.7 ppg, 8.0 rpg) and veteran Rakeem Buckles complete the rotation for minutes inside with Jared Swopshire's minutes dropping in recent games. Kentucky's a slightly better rebounding team but Louisville does a better job of getting after the offensive boards with an average of 14.5 caroms per game.

The guard play will likely determine the outcome especially for the visitors, as Louisville has struggled offensively in the half court. When they're forcing turnovers the Cardinals are a tough team to stop, as much of their offense comes as a result of the turnovers. But they weren't able to get enough fast-break chances against Georgetown, and they ultimately lost as a result. Siva (9.5 ppg, 6.4 apg) has dealt with injury issues, limiting his effectiveness for much of the season. Chris Smith and Kyle Kuric are the other starters on the perimeter, with Kuric being the Cardinals' most versatile player as he can play a variety of positions. And then there's redshirt freshman Russ Smith, who is second on the team in scoring and has the potential to be a handful for either team.

Sophomore guard Doron Lamb (15.8 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 2.1 apg) is Kentucky's leading scorer, and the New York native is a smooth player who rarely gets out of control. He and senior Darius Miller won't be of concern for Calipari as both have a good idea of what needs to be done on the floor. As for freshman Marquis Teague, who at one time was committed to attend Louisville, he can get out of control on occasion. Look for the Louisville pressure to attack Teague for this reason as he averages 3.1 turnovers to go along with 4.4 assists per game. As a team the Wildcats average 12.6 turnovers per game while Louisville forces an average of 17.4. Look for this statistical category to determine the outcome of the game.

In other games Saturday there's a nice mix of conference and important non-conference games to take in. The Big Ten's got an important battle in Bloomington as Indiana hosts Ohio State with the home team looking to avoid an 0-2 start to conference play. The Buckeyes blew out Northwestern in their Big Ten opener while the Hoosiers fell at Michigan State in a game that featured big runs by both teams. The key for Indiana is to limit Jared Sullinger's impact on the game while also keeping Cody Zeller out of foul trouble. Two other conference games to watch are UConn hosting St. John's (Moe Harkless was originally a UConn commit) in the Big East and Milwaukee visiting Butler in the Horizon League.

As for another big non-conference game there's Xavier hosting Gonzaga, with the Musketeers looking to capitalize on being a full team with the return of Dezmine Wells to the lineup. And given their 1-2 record at the Diamond Head Classic this game could be key for Xavier from an NCAA Tournament seeding standpoint. Gonzaga's going to need consistent play from Elias Harris on the road, and he may be the key to a long run in March for Mark Few's squad. Harvard taking on Saint Joseph's is another good non-conference game for the Atlantic 10, and the battle between C.J. Aiken and Harvard's Keith Wright will be fun to watch.

Virginia Tech visits Oklahoma State in a game that would likely have a bigger effect on the Hokies should they lose given the Cowboys' play this season and the struggles of many ACC teams in the non-conference portion of the schedule. And there's also a critical game in the MVC as Creighton visits Wichita State, needing a win to avoid an 0-2 start to league play. The Pac-12 will cap 2011 with all 12 teams playing conference games, with UCLA visiting Cal in a game that the Bruins needs to avoid an 0-2 start to league play. And just as the ball is dropping in Times Square, Oregon and Washington should be wrapping up the final game of 2011. Happy New Year.

Thursday Recap: Rutgers Beats #10 Florida

The matchup between #10 Florida and Rutgers on Thursday night was hyped up due to the return of Mike Rosario, who transferred from the New Jersey school following two seasons in New Brunswick. But his return was a subplot in what turned out to be one of the best games of the calendar year, with the focus by the end being Mike Rice's young guards. Eli Carter led the way with 31 points, seven rebounds and seven assists while Myles Mack knocked down some big shots late in regulation and during the overtime periods to lead Rutgers to the 85-83 double overtime victory.

Jerome Seagears added 13 points and junior forward Dane Miller was his usual versatile self with 16 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two steals. Kenny Boynton led four Florida players in double figures with 26 points, but the Gators seemed to bog down offensively down the stretch, once again not getting the ball inside enough to Patric Young. Young finished with 11 points but took just eight shots in 41 minutes of play, and there was even a possession where Florida failed to get him the ball despite being guarded by the 6'3" Carter. Florida's guards had the experience advantage, but it was Rutgers that made that one extra big play to win the game.

"Would I have liked them to get into our sets a little quicker? Sure," said Rice after the game. "But there was such a poise, such a confidence. They responded at the end. I always take it back because they practice like that ...hopefully this is [what's] to come."

For all their youth Rutgers turned the ball over just 11 times compared to 18 Florida turnovers, and their assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.64 was nearly double their season average (0.86). Also critical for the Scarlet Knights was their play on the boards, as they were out-rebounded by just one (37-36) on the night with Derrick Randall supplying eight rebounds in 17 minutes of play. The Rutgers reserves, led by Mack (14 points), outscored Florida's bench 22-8 with Rosario scoring five points for the Gators. The Scarlet Knights are young and there will be bumps in the road in Big East play, but as Coach Rice said after the game the future is bright.

"This is what happens when you don't think impossible is impossible," said Rice. "This is what happens when young men are determined to follow the formula and play for one another."

Other Notable Happenings

1. Vanderbilt jumps Marquette from the start and picks up a much-needed resume builder.
Much of the country didn't get to see the beginning of Vanderbilt/Marquette due to the length of Rutgers' win over Florida, and by the time ESPN2 switched over the game was essentially finished. Kevin Stallings' Commodores jumped out to a 19-4 lead and didn't look back, leading by as many as 25 points in the first half (31-6) on their way to a 74-57 victory. Marquette couldn't hit the broad side of a barn in the first half as they shot 21.2% from the field and finished the game making 32.2% of their shots.

Jeffery Taylor led four Commodores in double figures with 19 points while Lance Goulbourne added 13 to go along with 16 rebounds, and Marquette's inability to make shots allowed the visitors to get away with 17 turnovers. Jae Crowder (16 points) and Darius Johnson-Odom (12 points) reached double figures but with fellow starters Junior Cadougan and Vander Blue combining to make two of ten shots from the field the Golden Eagles weren't able to get back into the game. Vanderbilt needed a win like this to re-establish some national credibility after an 8-4 start, and this will help as they go into SEC play.

2. Saint Mary's welcomes BYU to the WCC with 98 points in Moraga.
BYU and Saint Mary's went into Thursday's game familiar with each other since they met last season, even with some of the key figures in that meeting no longer in school. But confernce play can be an entirely different animal, as the Cougars found out in the second half of the Gaels' 98-82 victory. Randy Bennett's team made 55.4% of their shots and assisted on 23 of 31 made baskets, and individually both Matthew Dellavedova and Rob Jones posted double-doubles. Dellavedova ran the show for Saint Mary's, finishing with 18 points and 12 assists, while Jones was a matchup nightmare for BYU with 24 points and 15 rebounds.

Brandon Davies was outstanding for BYU in scoring 28 points and grabbing seven rebounds, but there wasn't enough offensive help for Davies when considering the fact that four SMC starters finished in double figures. Stephen Holt made eight of his ten shots in scoring 21 points and Jorden Page added 13 and five assists. On a night filled with offense, BYU simply could not get stops when they needed them the most. Of the three contenders for the WCC title (Gonzaga) the Gaels have the weakest non-conference resume, so that regular season crown may be most important for them when it comes to the NCAA Tournament. Thursday night was a good first step in that direction.

3. Cashmere Wright takes matters into his own hands late to lead Cincinnati past Oklahoma.
One question regarding Cincinnati's smaller lineup in light of the suspensions of Yancy Gates and Cheikh Mbodj was how the Bearcats would deal with bigger teams, something that wasn't an issue in wins over lesser competition. Oklahoma provided that challenge, and while it wasn't pretty Cincinnati found a way to win 56-55. That way: give Cashmere Wright the chance to make plays late. The junior point guard scored just eight points on the night (3-14 FG), but he made two huge baskets in the final minute including the game-winner with 8.8 seconds to go. Cincinnati turned the ball over just eight times on the night compared to 17 for the Sooners (UC: 16 points off turnovers), and while they were a minus-9 in rebounding margin the Bearcats grabbed 13 offensive boards and scored ten second-chance points (OU finished with 11). Cincinnati's taken full advantage of what could have been a crippling turn of events, becoming a better basketball team as a result.

Quick Hitters

1. It was a bad night for ACC bottom-feeders on Thursday, with Boston College losing to #24 Harvard for the fourth consecutive time (67-46) and Georgia Tech
losing at Fordham (72-66). To say the least these results don't do much
to maintain the league's computer numbers, and it could be a long
conference season for both the Eagles and Yellow Jackets. And it should
also be noted that Wake Forest nearly lost to Yale after leading by 19, ultimately hanging on to beat the Bulldogs 72-71.

2. Freshman guard Jamal Branch has left the Texas A&M
program and will transfer according to multiple media outlets. Branch
averaged just 4.2 points and 2.5 assists per game, but his departure
leaves the Aggies one option short on a perimeter that hasn't played at a
championship level this season.

3. Two teams that took hits to their chances of an at-large bid on Thursday are Marshall and Iona,
with both falling on the road. Iona couldn't recover from 19 first half
turnovers in an 83-75 loss at Hofstra while the Thundering Herd lost
79-74 to a Belmont team they beat just ten days ago. The Herd may have a
better shot at earning an at-large given their conference affiliation
(Conference USA), but the climb for both teams became a lot tougher.

4. Shaka Smart's VCU
Rams won their seventh straight game on Thursday, winning 76-75 in
overtime at Akron. Bradford Burgess led four Rams in double figures with
19 points (and seven rebounds) and VCU forced 20 Akron turnovers on the
night.

5. Getting to conference play wasn't the catalyst for Austin Peay
that some thought it would be as the Governors lost 67-65 at Eastern
Kentucky. Dave Loos' team dropped to 3-11 on the season (0-1 OVC) while
the Colonels are now 2-0 in league play.

6. In the "inexplicable loss" category are the defeats suffered by American and James Madison,
who in losing to Mount St. Mary's and Rhode Island respectively lost to
teams that entered Thursday with a combined 2-21 record.

7. Even though they were the home team it's likely that few people expected Illinois State
to beat Northern Illinois in the MVC opener for both teams. But that's
exactly what happened as the Redbirds, led by Jackie Carmichael (19
points, 10 rebounds, four blocks), beat the Panthers 65-61.

8. The opening night of Pac-12 play didn't lack excitement either, with Stanford hanging on to beat UCLA
60-59. UCLA took 13 shots in the second half that would have given them
the lead if converted...and missed them all. And in Seattle, Tony
Wroten led Washington to a 95-80 win over Oregon State
with 26 points, nine rebounds and four assists. If the freshman
continues to learn how to use his talents to make his teammates better,
look out.

Three Notable Performances

1. G Eli Carter (Rutgers)
31 points, seven rebounds and seven assists in the Scarlet Knights' 85-83 double overtime win over #10 Florida.

2. F Will Barton (Memphis)
27 points, 13 rebounds and three assists in the Tigers' 64-47 win over Robert Morris.

3. F Chris Gaston (Fordham)
23 points and 17 rebounds in the Rams' 72-66 win over Georgia Tech.

Thursday Preview: BYU at Saint Mary's

It can be argued that Vanderbilt's trip to #13 Marquette is the big game of the day on Thursday, especially when considering a Commodore resume that could use some added bulk. But there's also the first-ever conference game as a member of the West Coast Conference for BYU (11-3), and they're jumping directly into the fire thanks to the league schedule-makers. Dave Rose's Cougars visit Saint Mary's (11-2) in the league opener for both teams, and there are some very good individual battles to keep track of in Moraga. The Gaels are 9-0 at home on the season thanks to both a tough environment for visitors at McKeon Pavilion and the talented players at Randy Bennett's disposal. The one who "stirs the drink": junior point guard Matthew Dellavedova.

Dellavedova (13.9 ppg, 6.3 apg), who was inexplicably left off of the first Cousy Award candidate list, is called upon to score as well as set up the Gaels' other options. The Australian shoots at a good clip from both the floor (44.3%) and from three (36.5%), with Steven Holt (8.3 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 3.5 apg) and Jorden Page (7.7 ppg) also factoring into things on the perimeter. Senior forward Clint Steindl (9.0 ppg, 3.5 rpg) is shooting 44.9% from beyond the arc, and he can be a matchup problem for teams given his comfort on the perimeter. Thanks in large part to this perimeter rotation the Gaels average 17.0 assists and 11.5 turnovers per game, and their efficiency (114.1) is tops in the WCC.

BYU ranks third in the conference in offensive efficiency (111.3), and the addition of UCLA transfer Matt Carlino at the end of the fall semester has paid dividend for the Cougars. Carlino (17.3 ppg, 4.8 rpg), who some have envisioned as possibly become a southpaw guard in the mold of Jimmer Fredette, has hit the ground running in shooting 54.5% from both the field and from three. Wings Charles Abouo (11.9 ppg, 7.0 ppg) and Brock Zylstra (9.1 ppg, 3.7 rpg) were BYU's best perimeter scorers before Carlino became eligible, and they're both clearly going to remain key options offensively. But what Carlino's arrival has done is make opponents account for the point guard spot supplying credible scoring, something that wasn't happening when he wasn't available.

The play inside will be where BYU may have to take control of the game, and they're more than capable of doing so with one of the top frontcourts on the west coast. Obviously Abouo's going to help on the glass given the fact that he's the Cougars' second-leading rebounder, but BYU can call on the experienced Noah Hartsock (17.5 ppg, 6.0 rpg) and Brandon Davies (11.2 ppg, 7.2 rpg) for scoring and muscle inside. Hartsock is shooting 59.1% from the field on the season, which is quite the achievement when considering that he's taken the most shots on the team (159). Davies is a very good athlete who does the majority of his work in the paint, and while his field goal percentage is down from his first two seasons in Provo that's got more to do with Davies' larger role.

As for Saint Mary's their best frontcourt player is senior Rob Jones (14.0 ppg, 10.6 rpg), who leads the team in both scoring and rebounding while also ranking third on the team in assists. If Saint Mary's isn't calling upon Dellavedova to make something happen more likely than not it's Jones who shoulders that responsibility. The other interior players are called upon more for defense and rebounding than scoring, with the experienced Kenton Walker and Mitchell Young combining with freshman Brad Waldow and sophomore Beau Levesque in a four-man platoon (seven-footer Kyle Rowley also plays 6.2 mpg). This group has to help out Jones on the boards against a BYU team that's the better rebounding squad of the two.

The Cougars out-rebound their opponents by an average of 5.1 rebounds per game while the Gaels are almost breaking even (plus-0.3) in rebounding margin. With these being the top two defensive teams in the WCC from an efficiency (and field goal percentage) standpoint, rebounding and second-chance points could make the difference. If Davies, Hartsock and the rest of the Cougars can attack the offensive glass successfully they've got a shot at leaving Moraga with the win. But they're also going to need either Anson Winder or Craig Cusick to step up and take advantage of whatever opportunities come their way on the perimeter. With Gonzaga also factoring into the WCC race, one of these two teams will get a much-appreciated jump on the competition with a win.

Vanderbilt, to their credit, has played a tough schedule to this point in the season but at 8-4 there's no doubt that the Commodores could use another quality win before the start of SEC play. Thursday night's game at #13 Marquette offers the perfect opportunity to pick one up, but John Jenkins and Jeffery Taylor are going to have their hands full on the perimeter. In addition to Darius Johnson-Odom there's also point guard Junior Cadougan, Vander Blue and reserve Todd Mayo to account for. And in an inside/out role Jae Crowder is one of the top forwards in the Big East. Whether or not Vanderbilt can leave Milwaukee with the win could depend on what they get from Brad Tinsley and Festus Ezeli.

Pac-12 plays also gets underway, and while the much-maligned conference doesn't have a single ranked team that doesn't mean that the action will lack suspense. Oregon State visits Washington with a chance to prove that they're ready to be an actual factor in the title race as opposed to a spolier, and with Jared Cunningham leading the way it's definitely possible. Washington needs to find a way to mesh the talents of Abdul Gaddy and Tony Wroten on the perimeter while also getting the ball to C.J. Wilcox and Terrence Ross on the wings. If one were to combine the raw talent of Wroten with the savvy of Gaddy the end result would be the perfect point guard for Lorenzo Romar's system, but obviously that isn't possible.

UCLA's trip to Stanford is another matchup of interest as the Bruins have won five straight games. One big reason why is that they're defending better, and the improved execution on the offensive end hasn't hurt either. Stanford counters with forward Josh Owens and freshman guard Chaisson Allen, who is going to be a star in the Pac-12 and possibly sooner rather than later. Harvard will likely be expected to win at Boston College and Mike Rosario returns to Rutgers in a pair of games in the northeast that the visitors are expected to win, and Memphis had better be careful to not underestimate Andy Toole's Robert Morris Colonials.

Friday Recap: Wagner Knocks off #15 Pittsburgh

Plenty of teams have pre-Christmas letdowns, when they allow their minds to wander a bit against teams they're expected to beat. But in a lot of those cases the favored team is able to bounce back and do enough to eventually win the game. But that wasn't the case for #15 Pittsburgh, who turned the ball over 18 times against a team in Wagner that was talented enough to make them pay for those errors. Dan Hurley's Seahawks scored 14 points off of those turnovers and limited Pitt to 2-for-15 shooting in winning 59-54, the program's first win over a ranked opponent since 1978 (Alabama).

Latif Rivers led Wagner with 18 points but the player with just as big of an impact was guard Kenny Ortiz, who scored 12 points and dished out seven assists while also being the main man responsible for defending Ashton Gibbs. Gibbs, the preseason Big East Player of the Year, shot1-for-7 from beyond the arc and 5-for-16 overall in scoring 14 points while turning the ball over four times (one assist). Pittsburgh's turnover count was their highest since losing point guard Tray Woodall to groin and abdominal injuries following a win over Duquesne at the end of November, and when combining that with a clear lack of energy and focus it wasn't hard to see why Pitt lost (in addition to what Wagner did to make it happen).

"They pressured us and we didn't have a turnover in the backcourt, but in the second half we had a lot of turnovers that hard to understand," said Pitt head coach Jamie Dixon after the game. "We didn't play well and we got what we deserved."

While the offense will be the primary focus of the critiques on the Panthers' play against Wagner, the long-term concern has to be their perimeter defense as Woodall will improve their execution on the other end of the floor. With Ortiz, Rivers and Tyler Murray (12 points), Wagner was able to spread out the Pitt defense and take advantage of the gaps that resulted, leading by as many as 12 in the second half before the Panthers would look to rally for the win. But for every charge that Pittsburgh made the Seahawks, expected to be one of the contenders in the NEC, had an answer. As a result they've given themselves and the Staten Island school an early Christmas present no one expected beforehand.

"This is big for us as individuals and as a team," said Rivers. "When you play a top ranked team and can come into their home court and come out with the win, that's big."

Other Notable Happenings

1. Pierre Jackson makes the big plays late to lead Baylor past West Virginia.
We all know what the big question regarding the Baylor Bears is, and it will likely hover over Scott Drew's squad throughout the season. But the question about whether or not they had the guard play required to be a national title contender received quite the answer from junior Pierre Jackson. Jackson scored a team-high 23 points, including the game-tying three late in regulation, to go along with five rebounds, four assists and three steals to lead Baylor to an 83-81 overtime win over West Virginia in the title game of the Las Vegas Classic. Also big for the Bears was Boston College transfer Brady Heslip, who knocked down five of seven from beyond the arc and scored 19 points.

With Gary Franklin adding eight points in 22 minutes and A.J. Walton finishing with four assists the backcourt played pretty well in the victory. West Virginia had a chance to tie the game at the end of overtime but Jabarie Hinds' shot fell short as time expired. Kevin Jones was outstanding for the Mountaineers as he scored 28 points and grabbed 17 rebounds against one of the best frontcourts in America. Hinds added 18 points and seven assists while Truck Bryant scored 16, and the Mountaineers out-rebounded Baylor 39-36 with 15 offensive rebounds. But with guard play being key late, it was Baylor whose guards stepped up. That's a good sign for the Bears moving forward.

2. Josten Thomas' bucket results in the first three-game skid of the Chris Mack era at Xavier.
Chris Mack's team, which had its starting backcourt of Tu Holloway and Mark Lyons on the floor together for the first time since their win over Cincinnati, led by as many as 12 points early in the second half and looked to be a good bet to beat host Hawaii at the Diamond Head Classic. But the offense bogged down in the second half as the Musketeers shot just 40.6% from the field in the final 20 minutes of regulation. Gib Arnold's Warriors took advantage of this to force overtime, and Josten Thomas' basket with eight tenths of a second remaining proved to be the difference in Hawaii's 84-82 win.

The loss makes three straight for Xavier, the first such streak in Mack's tenure at his alma mater. They'll get Dezmine Wells back after the final game of this event but even with the suspensions no one envisioned Xavier dropping their first two games of the event. What's become apparent in the aftermath of the brawl with rival Cincinnati is that the Musketeers lost all momentum gained from such an emphatic victory that moved them to 8-0 at the time. This is a talented team for sure, but they've got some work to do when it comes to regaining their confidence, and there's no better way to start that process than to end their trip to Hawaii with a good showing against Southern Illinois on Sunday.

3. UNLV controls the game from start to finish in whipping California.
Everyone knew how big of a game this was for both California and the Pac-12, with both entities being short on marquee victories. But the best thing that may have come out of their 85-68 loss to #21 UNLV is the fact that this could be their final game of the regular season against a ranked opponent. Cal has played two games against ranked teams and lost by a combined 56 points, and they haven't really been in either game (Missouri in Kansas City being the other). Anthony Marshall was too much for the Golden Bears as he led four Runnin' Rebels in double figures with 22 points and nine rebounds, and UNLV assisted on 22 of their 34 baskets while also out-rebounding a Cal team without the injured Richard Solomon 46-37.

But to be fair even if Solomon were out on the court it likely would not have mattered, as UNLV would take a 46-26 lead into the half. Cal shot just 32% in the first half while UNLV made 54% of their shots and assisted on 14 of their 19 field goals. To their credit Cal fought back to within 13 in the second half, but it was essentially "name your score" time at Thomas & Mack. UNLV had the look of a contender in the Mountain West alongside the likes of New Mexico and San Diego State, handing Cal and the Pac-12 another blemish neither the team nor the conference could afford at this point.

Quick Hitters

1. Angel Rodriguez scored 11 of his 16 points in the second half to help lead Kansas State past UTEP 78-70 in the semis of the Diamond Head Classic. Will Spradling added 11 and Jamar Samuels posted a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

2. Larry Anderson scored 16 points to lead three players in double figures as Long Beach State beat Auburn 64-43 to advance to Sunday's title game against Kansas State. Dan Monson's team was the better squad throughout and pulled away in the second half with a 16-0 run.

3. Is UCLA starting to figure things out? They capped a five-game stretch leading into Pac-12 play with a 71-63 win over Richmond, moving to 7-5 on the season. Jeremy Anderson accounted for 13 points, seven rebounds and six assists as five Bruins finished in double figures. As guys begin to step up offensively Ben Howland may be able to find more minutes for Anthony Stover, his best frontcourt defender. Stover played just seven minutes on Friday.

4. Pe'Shon Howard made his highly-anticipated season debut for Maryland, playing 32 minutes (seven points, three rebounds) in Maryland's 65-60 win over Radford. With Howard back and big man Alex Len slated to make his debut in Maryland's next game, Mark Turgeon will receive a much-needed boost in the depth department.

5. Bryce Cotton scored 16 second-half points and hit two three-pointers in an 8-0 run that set in motion Providence pulling away to beat in-state rival Rhode Island 80-61. The debut of transfers Andre Malons and Billy Baron provided a spark early for the Rams, but they were unable to sustain the momentum and fell to 1-11. The Friars finish non-conference play 11-2, and snapped an eight-game losing streak for the road team in this series.

6. Russ Smith scored 23 points while also tallying three rebounds, three assists and two steals at Louisville rallied to beat Western Kentucky 70-60 to remain undefeated. One of the best decisions of the off-season in college basketball may have been Rick Pitino's decision to no longer attempt to shoehorn Smith into the point guard position. He's far more effective at the two despite his height, and has had a major impact in the last two wins.

7. John Groce's Ohio Bobcats moved to 11-1 on the season with an 82-66 win over North Carolina A&T. Nick Kellogg and Walter Offutt scored 14 points apiece while Ivo Baltic added 12 for the Bobcats, who have won eight straight games.

8. Keep an eye on Penn in the Ivy League, as they've got one of the best point guards around in senior Zack Rosen. Rosen scored 13 points and dished out 12 assists while Tyler Bernardini knocked down eight three-pointers and scored 30 points for the Quakers, who had all five starters score in double figures as they beat Marist 84-71. Harvard is the clear favorite but look for Jerome Allen's team to put up a good fight.

Three Notable Performances

1. F Kevin Jones (West Virginia)
28 points, 17 rebounds and two assists in the Mountaineers' 83-81 overtime loss to #7 Baylor in Las Vegas.

2. G/F Alex Young (IUPUI)
27 points, six assists, five rebounds, three steals and two blocks in the Jaguars' 97-88 win over Valparaiso.

3. G Jordan Theodore (Seton Hall)
26 points, six assists, four rebounds and two steals in the Pirates' 80-61 win at Longwood.

Friday's Preview: West Virginia vs. #7 Baylor

Friday marks the final day of games before Christmas Day, and while the schedule is light there are some good games to keep an eye on. Atop the list is a game at the Las Vegas Classic matching West Virginia (8-2) and #7 Baylor (10-0), with the Bears boasting one of the deepest frontcourt rotations in the country. But to be fair this is their most strenuous back-to-back stretch of the season as they beat Saint Mary's on Thursday night. West Virginia's got one of the top forwards in the country in senior Kevin Jones (20.8 ppg, 11.3 rpg), but he's going to need help from the Mountaineers' other frontcourt players if they're to keep the Bears at bay.

One player who's capable of helping out Jones physically is Deniz Kilicli (12.2 ppg, 6.6 rpg), a physical interior presence who will need to avoid foul trouble in order for WVU to be at their best. Perry Jones III (16.2 ppg, 5.8 rpg) is the best NBA Draft prospect of the Baylor big men but freshman Quincy Miller (10.8 ppg, 5.3 ppg, 2.7 apg) isn't far behind, and his versatility and unselfish play have been great boosts to the Bears' attack. Veterans Quincy Acy and Anthony Jones are also key figures on the back line of Scott Drew's matchup zone, and the wingspan of these players makes it very difficult for opponents to find open areas.

Baylor blocks eight shots per game but their rebounding numbers don't exactly fit the profile of what one would expect from a dominant frontcourt, as their rebounding margin stands at a plus-6.7. West Virginia hasn't been great in that regard either but they do grab nearly 14 offensive rebounds per game and Baylor allows 14.1. With the zone it can be difficult at times to box out, but the Bears cannot allow this to be the case on Friday night. Jones leads the way with 4.6 offensive boards per game and players such as Kilicli and Kevin Noreen can also be of assistance on the glass.

The play on the perimeter should also pique the interest of viewers as guard play has been pointed to as the determining factor in how far Baylor goes this season. Pierre Jackson (11.5 ppg, 4.6 apg) hasn't started a game this season but he's the leading assist man for the Bears with A.J. Walton (4.2 apg) ranking second. Both can still stand to improve on their turnover numbers as Jackson averages three per game and Walton 2.4. Cal transfer Gary Franklin played his first game as a Bear at BYU last weekend and did his best work on the defensive end of the floor, but he's another option at the point if needed.

West Virginia returns a veteran in senior Truck Bryant (16.5 ppg, 3.2 apg) but he's had to do more work off the ball with the scorers they lost from last season's team. That's meant that two newcomers, Jabarie Hinds (7.9 ppg, 3.7 apg) and Gary Browne (5.8 ppg, 3.6 apg) have shared the duties at the point for much of the game. The two are averaging a combined 4.8 turnovers per game, a number that should (and has to) improve as the Mountaineers approach Big East play. Both teams turn the ball over an average of 15 times per game while forcing 17 turnovers, with Baylor's defensive turnover percentage slightly better due to playing one less possession per game.

The key for West Virginia will be to find quality looks inside of the arc; they shoot 31.4% from deep while Baylor allows opponents to shoot 31.9%. Where Baylor's been really good is their overall field goal percentage defense, as opponents have made just 34.6% of their shots. Could the schedule have something to do with this? Yes, but the bigger reason is the length of the frontcourt discussed above. It's difficult to make those shots when having to deal with multiple players possessing wingspans beyond seven feet, but WVU will have to find a way to do so if they're to win.

In other games on Friday there's a huge game in Las Vegas, especially for the resume of the Pac-12. California, one of the teams expected to contend for the conference title, takes on Mountain West contender UNLV and the Rebels rank among the most tested teams in the country. The Golden Bears may once again be without forward Richard Solomon, and that could be an issue when it comes to dealing with UNLV's Mike Moser. The guard play should be fun to watch with Cal having Allen Crabbe, Jorge Gutierrez and Justin Cobbs while UNLV will counter with Oscar Bellfield, Anthony Marshall and Chace Stanback just to name three of their weapons. UNLV would be in good shape either way, but with that Missouri whipping on their resume Cal could use another good non-conference win.

Rhode Island gains the services of Billy Baron and Andre Malone, a pair of mid-season transfers the 1-10 Rams desperately need to go along with Jamal Wilson. They'll host in-state rival Providence, with Ed Cooley doing a very good job thus far in turning around the proud program. Vincent Council ranks among the top point guards in the Big East, Bryce Cotton has made significant strides in his sophomore campaign and LaDontae Henton has been one of the best freshmen in America.

Pittsburgh hosts NEC contender Wagner, and the Seahawks will look to their solid backcourt led by Tyler Murray to lead the way in their quest for the upset. And also on the west coast is Richmond taking on UCLA in a game that the Spiders can definitely win. Darien Brothers scored 38 against ODU, and while the Bruins have won four straight since the dismissal of Reeves Nelson they're schedule has done them a favor (outside of the Penn matchup).

Wednesday Recap: Bearcats' Small Lineup a Success in Game One

With suspensions ruling out two of their key interior players for the next six games, many wondered what Mick Cronin's Cincinnati Bearcats would do to make up for the absence of Yancy Gates and Cheikh Mbodj. Without a consistent scoring option in the paint the strategy was to let the guards go to work, and that they did in the Bearcats' 78-58 win at Wright State. Sean Kilpatrick, who was a non-factor in their loss at Xavier on Saturday, scored a game-high 20 points (6-12 3PT) while JaQuon Parker added 14 points and all five starters finished in double figures.

Freshman Jermaine Sanders, one of the players expected to benefit from those losses as more minutes have become available, scored nine points and grabbed four rebounds in 18 minutes of play and point guard Cashmere Wright dished out eight assist to three turnovers to go along with 12 points. Cincinnati fired away from deep throughout the night, making 14 of their 32 shots from beyond the arc. The Bearcats average seven makes and 17 attempts from beyond the arc on the season, but with Gates out those numbers figure to increase until he returns.

A.J. Pacher and John Balwigaire scored 11 points apiece to lead the Raiders, who shot 47.5% from the field but turned the ball over 13 times and were out-rebounded 31-22. Two other areas that cost Billy Donlon's team were points in the paint (22-18 Cincinnati) and second-chance points (23-2 Cincinnati), and these are areas that one wouldn't expect Cincinnati to control given their lack of interior depth. But they found a way to do so, and with the offensive issues that Wright State's had this season (averaging 55 points per game) the Bearcats' fast start proved to be too much to overcome.

The good news for Cincinnati is that their next three games, Radford, Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Chicago State, are all winnable games that they should be able to win despite the depth issues. And with a loss to Presbyterian already on their resume it's critical that the Bearcats take care of business and avoid any more bad losses as there won't be another marquee non-conference opportunity available. Game one offered a blueprint for the Bearcats with regards to how they'll score with Gates out of the lineup, with the guards needing to take on greater scoring responsibilities. It also won't hurt if they can knock down shots from deep at a similar clip to Wednesday's mark.

Other Notable Happenings

1. Did an injury impact UCLA's defensive efficiency? It very well could have.
With forward Travis Wear missing Wednesday's game against Eastern Washington with a skin infection on his left foot there were minutes up for grabs in the frontcourt for someone. That turned out to be Anthony Stover, who missed the early portion of the season with a shoulder injury, and he took full advantage of the increased minutes in the Bruins' 60-47 win over the Eagles. Stover played 18 minutes but blocked three shots and grabbed three rebounds, providing the spark UCLA needed on the defensive end of the floor. EWU shot a season-low 25.9% from the field and turned the ball over 12 times to just five assists on the night.

Cliff Ederaine and Colin Chiverton had particularly rough nights as they combined to make just eight of thirty-one shots for a combined 21 points. Lazeric Jones had another solid scoring performance for the Bruins with 19 points to go along with six rebounds and four assists and Tyler Lamb added 14, but for Ben Howland's team to be successful they have to be better defensively. Wednesday was a step in the right direction, and they can partially thank Stover for that.

2. Charleston recovers from a slow start to defend their home floor against Tennessee.
To the surprise of many Cuonzo Martin's Volunteers led College of Charleston by as many as 11 points in the first half at TD Arena. But as the game wore on Bobby Cremins' Cougars got back into the game and would lead by as many as 14 in the second half on their way to the 71-65 win. This is the second straight season that Charleston has beaten Tennessee, and the tandem of Antwaine Wiggins and Andrew Lawrence led the way on Wednesday.

Wiggins scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds while Lawrence added 14 points, five steals and four assists. Charleston scored 22 points off of 16 Tennessee turnovers, and the six-point edge in that category proved to be the difference. The Cougars were also aided by a ten-point edge in points from the foul line (14-4), moving to 8-1 on the season as a result. It took some time but the Cougars were able to put together a stretch worthy of a team looking to compete for a conference title. The key now is to consistently put forth that kind of effort for entire games.

3. Princeton's three-pointer at the buzzer hands Rider their tenth loss of the season.
According to The Beatles, "one is the loneliest number", and in addition to that fact it was also the most important number in Lawrenceville, New Jersey. Mack Darrow made just one shot on the night: a three-pointer as time expired to give Princeton a 72-71 overtime win at Rider to drop the Broncs to a stunning 1-10 mark on the season. The Tigers probably should have sewn things up in regulation as they led 65-61 with less than 30 seconds remaining after trailing by as many as 16 late in the first half, but the Broncs sent the game into overtime thanks to four Brandon Penn points.

Things remained tight in the extra session but Rider left the door open by missing three of their final four free throws. Douglas Davis would take Daniel Stewart's second miss and drive down the court, finding Darrow for the game-winning bucket. The Tigers will be a factor in the Ivy League race but it's very difficult to say the same about Tommy Dempsey's Broncs in the MAAC. A team that many expected to finish in the top four at the very least may struggle to finish outside of the bottom four at their current pace, and that's something that no one familiar with Rider's talent expected in October.

Quick Hitters

1. In the lone afternoon game of the day Iona picked up a good road victory at Richmond. In the 88-79 win Scott Machado dished out 15 assists and scored 13 points while Mike Glover led the way with 24 points and eight rebounds. Iona shot 67.7% from the field in the second half and finished the game with an offensive efficiency of 118.9. Richmond opponents average an efficiency of 98.5 on the season.

2. Jared Sullinger didn't start for Ohio State but he did return to the lineup, scoring 12 points and grabbing ten rebounds in 25 minutes of action as the Buckeyes beat USC Upstate 82-58. Ohio State shot 56.9% from the field on the night, beginning to pull away late in the first half thanks to 13 forced turnovers. Deshaun Thomas led the way with 23 points, his ninth straight double-figure scoring outing.

3. Kyle O'Quinn scored 22 points and grabbed 14 rebounds and Quasim Pugh scored 10 points in 15 minutes off the bench as Norfolk State beat LIU 73-62. The Spartans limited LIU to 33.8% shooting from the field and 5-for-21 from beyond the arc.

4. FIU led for much of the night at Maryland but couldn't seal the deal, allowing the Terrapins to escape with 65-61 victory in front of a sparse crowd at the Comcast Center. FIU shot 35.5% from the field in the second half, and for the game Maryland outscored the Golden Panthers 22-9 from the foul line.

5. It isn't far-fetched to think that Denver may be the best team in the state of Colorado. Joe Scott's Pioneers beat Northern Colorado 71-65 in Greeley with Brian Stafford (16 points) and Royce O'Neale (14) leading the way offensively and Chris Udofia blocking three shots. Denver visits Colorado State on January 11th, and a win in Fort Collins would be another piece of evidence in support of them being the best in the state.

6. Baylor took care of business in their 69-42 win over Bethune-Cookman, but the real test comes on Saturday as they visit BYU. The Bears limited Bethune-Cookman to 34.8% shooting and Pierre Jackson scored 12 points and dished out four assists in 23 minutes off the bench.

Three Notable Performances

1. F Kyle O'Quinn (Norfolk State)
22 points, 14 rebounds and four assists in the Spartans' 73-62 win over Long Island.

2. G Scott Machado (Iona)
15 assists, 13 points and six rebounds in the Gaels' 88-79 win at Richmond.

3. F Ian Hummer (Princeton)
21 points, 12 rebounds, seven assists and four steals in the Tigers' 72-71 overtime win at Rider.

Saturday Recap: Watford's Shot Lifts Indiana Past Kentucky

In the days leading up to Indiana's game against#1 Kentucky at
Assembly Hall there weren't too many people who thought that the
Hoosiers could knock off the Wildcats. There were a few outside of the
Indiana fan base who picked Tom Crean's team to win, but the majority of
the predictions ranged anywhere from a close loss to a Kentucky blowout
with IU's schedule to date being the main reason why. But what didn't
seem realistic in the days leading up to the game became reality thanks
to Christian Watford, who knocked down a three from the left elbow as
time expired to give Indiana the 73-72 win.

Watford led five
Hoosiers in double figures with 20 points in his best performance of the
season, with Victor Oladipo (13 points, seven rebounds) and Cody Zeller
(11 points, seven rebounds) chipping in as well. Zeller was also the
focal point of what plagued Indiana as they watched a ten-point lead
slip away, as the Hoosiers threw up wild shots instead of getting their
freshman the ball.

Kentucky's Anthony Davis was either out of the
game or playing with four fouls for a good portion of that stretch,
which should have lent itself to getting Zeller the ball. But the
Hoosiers survived and won a game that in recent years they'd either lose
late or not be in to begin with, so this is a big step in the return to
national prominence.

"It's a great moment for us.," said Crean.
"It's a great victory because it's just such an outstanding team and a
team, you can see it, the explosiveness, the athleticism, the skill
level, the coaching, it's top notch and to get a win like that is huge
and to have it be at home where our fans had so much to do with it is
the biggest part of the day."

Doron Lamb (19 points) and
Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (18 points, nine rebounds) led the way for the
Wildcats while Marquis Teague scored the majority of his 15 points in a
solid second half, but they needed more from sophomore forward Terrence
Jones. Jones didn't look to be himself from an activity standpoint,
finishing with four points and one rebound in 28 minutes of action.

But
in spite of his struggles and Davis' foul trouble Kentucky still had a
chance to get out of Bloomington with the win. Lamb made one of two free
throws with 5.6 seconds remaining to give UK a 72-70 lead, setting the
stage for Kentucky to give a foul since they had two to give. But
whether it was a matter of the Kentucky defender (Teague) not being
convincing enough in his attempt to foul or the official failing to make
the call, that didn't happen. And as a result, Kentucky likely won't be
ranked number one on Monday.

"We were going to foul them," said
Calipari. "We had two fouls to use. So, the whole timeout was about
fouling. Marquis tried to foul and they didn't call it. No one
fouled."

Kentucky made 55.6% of their shots on the afternoon, but
Indiana outscored the Wildcats 27-6 in points from beyond the arc. That
discrepancy made up for Indiana shooting just 43.1% overall and 37.2%
on two-point baskets, the latter number partially reflecting the effects
of the wingspan of Kentucky's front line. But Indiana hung in there and
ultimately won, and it has to be considered the watershed moment of the
Crean era. But there's still plenty of work to be done and games to be
won, so it may be wise to hold off on declaring Indiana to be all the
way "back".

Other Notable Happenings

1. Key figures step up in Kansas' win over a Jared Sullinger-less Ohio State.
Unfortunately for Thad Matta the All-American power forward was unable
to go due to back spasms, and this development opened the door for
Kansas to knock off the #2 team in the country. The Jayhawks took full
advantage, with Thomas Robinson scoring 21 points and Tyshawn Taylor
(playing with a torn meniscus, which will sideline him for the next three weeks) dishing out 13 assists in Kansas' 78-67 win in Lawrence. Ohio State fell
behind by double figures in the first half and couldn't get over the
hump despite nunerous attempts to take the lead.

William Buford scored
21 points to lead the Buckeyes and Deshaun Thomas added 19, but shooting
39% from the field led to their first loss of the season. The question
for Ohio State with Sullinger out is a simple one: who steps up to
create offense for this team. Aaron Craft scored 11 points and dished
out six assists, but Ohio State will need to do more in 1-on-1
situations while the big man is out. But the Buckeyes will be fine due
to the remaining talent and experience.

2. Xavier's emphatic win over Cincinnati sullied by both teams embarrassing their institutions.
It would be nice to be able to focus on the Musketeers' 76-53 win over
city rival Cincinnati for the play on the floor, as Chris Mack's team
pulled away late in the first half and added to their lead throughout
the final 20 minutes. However thanks to a bench-clearing brawl
that resulted in the game being ended with 9.3 seconds remaining the
actual game takes a back seat to one of the ugliest sights in recent
memory. Whether citing the statement made by Cincinnati's Sean
Kilpatrick earlier in the week or the chirping going on before the
national anthem, it was pretty clear that the Bearcats and Musketeers
were going to have some issues throughout the course of the game.

But
a brawl? There were so many things to point out during the fracas that
have no place in sports, from Tu Holloway talking to the Cincinnati
bench to the standoff between he and Ge'Lawn Guyn (with Dezmine Wells
entering himself with a shove) to Yancy Gates decking Kenny Frease and
Cheikh Mbodj following up with an Ndamukong Suh-esque stomp to Frease's
head. There was also the bright idea to allow Holloway and Mark Lyons to
speak to the media in the aftermath of the fight, and that clearly
didn't go well. Per NCAA rules the three players ejected for fighting
(Gates and Mbodj for Cincinnati, Wells for Xavier) will sit out their
team's next game but it's clear that one game won't be enough for many
of the players involved. It will be interesting to see how the schools
and their respective conferences hand out discipline for this
disgraceful showing.

3. UNLV can't get their tempo going in a loss at Wisconsin.
Few people expected Dave Rice's Runnin' Rebels to be able to go into the
Kohl Center and play the fast tempo that they prefer. Wisconsin's just
that good at controlling the flow of the game thanks to Bo Ryan's
system, and that ultimately resulted in a 62-51 Badger victory. Jordan
Taylor scored just four points and missed all ten of his shots from the
field, but the Rebels couldn't take advantage due to their own poor
shooting. Removing Chace Stanback (5-9 FG, 16 points), UNLV's starters
made just seven of twenty-four shots from the field and as a team the
Rebels were outscored by 15 points (30-15) from beyond the arc.

On
the season Wisconsin scores 41% of their points from deep but on
Saturday that number was up to 48%, and that's a number that can be
tough to overcome when a team makes just 38% of their two-point shots as
UNLV did. Ben Brust was outstanding off the bench as he made all seven
of his three-point attempts in scoring a game-high 25 points. Brust
gives the Badgers a scoring punch off the bench that they haven't had
especially in the backcourt, and if he can continue to provide that
Wisconsin has a weapon that teams will find difficult to match. But even
with Brust's play UNLV has to assign more blame to their own offensive
performance for the defeat.

4. Draymond Green leads Michigan State to a good road win at Gonxaga.
One thing that's been quite apparent over the last year plus is just how
good of a leader Michigan State senior forward Draymond Green is. And
with the young team that Tom Izzo has this season it's imperative that
Green continue to carry the load in that area, which he's done all
season long. The Spartans' leader in scoring, rebounding, assists and
steals was outstanding in their 74-67 win at Gonzaga, scoring 34 points
while providing great on-court leadership. As a team Michigan State shot
54.2% from the field and assisted on 18 of their 26 made baskets while
Gonzaga's assist/turnover split (nine assists, 20 turnovers) played a
big role in their demise. Also of import was the defense that Michigan
State played in slowing down Elias Harris and Kevin Pangos, who shot a
combined 5-for-19 from the field. But all that together and you end up
with one of the more impressive road victories of the season to date.

5. Saint Joseph's hands #17 Creighton their first loss of the season.
There was no doubting the fact that Phil Martelli's improved Hawks had a
shot to knock off undefeated Creighton going into Saturday's matinee.
And thanks to Carl Jones, who scored a game-high 29 points, the Hawks
got the job done by the final score of 80-71. Doug McDermott led
Creighton with yet another double-double as he finished with 26 points
and ten rebounds, but the Bluejay reserves were outscored 20-6 by the
Saint Joseph's tandem of Ronald Roberts Jr. (12 points) and Chris Wilson
(eight). Add in the fact that the Hawks attempted 23 more free throws
(making 19 to Creighton's six) and it's pretty easy to see why the home
team won. The Hawks' offensive numbers were significantly better than
what the Bluejays allow on the average this season, and they've played
much improved basketball when compared to 2010-11. Just another good
non-conference win for the Atlantic 10, one of the leagues likely to
profit from a down Pac-12 come March.

Quick Hitters

1. Duke
had the look of a marathoner who got off to a fast start only to hold
on for dear life towards the end as cramping set in with their 86-80 win
over Washington. Austin Rivers scored 18 points and Andre Dawkins added
17 off the bench, but Washington's Tony Wroten was a major player in
the Huskies' comeback with 23 points.

2. Don't look now but Columbia
has now won seven straight thanks to their 63-53 win over NEC favorite
LIU. Mark Cisco and John Daniels scored 12 points apiece and defensively
the Lions limited LIU to 36.4% shooting from the field. And this has
happened with Norwua Agho missing the last nine games with a torn
patellar tendon.

3. Nick Johnson scored 14 points and Solomon Hill 13 in Arizona's
63-47 win over Clemson in a game that also featured the return of point
guard Josiah Turner. Turner finished with six points and five turnovers
in 17 minutes of action, but if Sean Miller can get him to buy in the
Wildcats will be one of the favorites in the Pac-12.

4. Ramone Moore scored 32 points and grabbed six rebounds in Temple's 78-67 win over Villanova.
Maalik Wayns, Dominic Cheek and Mouphtaou Yarou scored 47 of the
Wildcats' 67 points on the afternoon, and to be frank if they don't get
contributions from the supporting cast it could be tough for Jay
Wright's team to grab an 8th straight NCAA Tournament bid.

5. Lazeric Jones led four UCLA
players in double figures with 21 points as the Bruins beat Penn 77-73
in their first game post-Reeves Nelson. Penn's field goal (44.8%) and
effective field goal (55.2%) percentages were actually improvements for
UCLA defensively when looking at their season averages. The chemistry
may be better without Nelson but talent-wise there's still a long way to
go for Ben Howland's team.

6. While Tennessee won't be a national contender, Austin Peay
picked up an important 74-70 win in Knoxville. Josh Terry scored 20
points and TyShawn Edmondson added 19 off the bench as the Governors
picked up their second win of the season. Dave Loos' team can still be a
factor in the OVC despite the slow start.

7. Jarrod Jones scored 21 points and his jumper with 48 seconds remaining proved to be the difference in Ball State's
58-55 home win over Butler. As for the Bulldogs, outside of Khyle
Marshall (9-15 FG, 21 points) the team shot 11-for-40 from the field.
Brad Stevens needs guys to step up as consistent offensive options if
Butler is to be a contender in the Horizon League.

Five Notable Performances

1. G/F Alex Young (IUPUI)
43 points (14-20 FG), nine rebounds and three steals in the Jaguars' 84-76 win over Western Kentucky.

2. F Javon McCrea (Buffalo)
29 points (14-17 FG), 13 rebounds and three steals in the Bulls' 80-72 win over Youngstown State.

3. F Draymond Green (Michigan State)
34 points (11-13 FG), three assists and three steals in Michigan State's 74-67 win over Gonzaga.

4. G Damian Lillard (Weber State)
Lillard
bounced back from an off night at BYU with 31 points (9-15 FG), nine
assists and three rebounds in the Wildcats' 84-66 win over Southern
Utah.

5. G Bryce Cotton (Providence)
34 points (11-16 FG) and three rebounds inthe Friars' 72-61 win over Brown.
