College Basketball: Preseason All-America Team

A pair of Kansas Jayhawks lead the CollegeHoops.net 2009-10 Preseason All-America Teams. Guard Sherron Collins is CHN's Preseason Player of the Year, and is joined on the First Team by big man Cole Aldrich. Luke Harangody, a member of our 2009 All-America Team, is the lone returnee. Three freshmen are on the list in John Wall, Derrick Favors, and Avery Bradley. A handful of players from outside the power conferences are included such as Nevada's Luke Babbitt and Butler's Gordon Hayward. Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, North Carolina, Purdue, Texas, and West Virginia have multiple players.

Back in April, the day after CHN announced its 08-09 All-Americans, I took a stab at projecting the 2009-10 squads. I made a good amount of guesses about who was returning to school.. many of which I was wrong about (see ya later Steph Curry and Jeff Teague, welcome back Patrick Patterson). Now that rosters have settled in and I've recently updated my preseason Top 50, its a good time to update my 2009-10 All-America picks. (Note that this is not CHN's official list, but my own).

AP All-America Team: Griffin Unanimous

The Story: Blake Griffin, the leading rebounder in the nation, was the only unanimous selection for the All-American team. Griffin received 71 first-team votes. The voters submit the ballots before the NCAA tournament. The Sooners were bounced from the tournament yesterday by North Carolina, led by fellow All-American Tyler Hansbrough. Hansbrough was a unanimous selection last year while also being named the consensus player of the year as a junior. This is the fourth straight season that he has earned All-American honors. Hansbrough was a third-teamer his freshman year and a second-teamer as a sophomore. He is also the third player to earn back-to-back first team accolades. He joins Phil Ford (1977-78) and Michael Jordan (1983-84). DeJuan Blair is Pittsburgh's second first-team All-American. Blair joins Don Hennon, who received first-team honors in 1958. Blair, who averaged a double-double this season, led the Panthers to a No. 1 seed in this year's tournament. Blair is the only post-season All-American not to be named on the preseason team. James Harden becomes Arizona State's first player to be an AP All-American. Harden averaged 20.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game. Stephen Curry rounds out the first-team. Curry led the country in scoring at 28.3 points per game. He helped lead Davidson to a regular season Southern Conference title, but Wildcats failed to earn an NCAA bid this season. Hasheem Thabeet of Connecticut, Ty Lawson of North Carolina, Luke Harangody of Notre Dame, Jodie Meeks of Kentucky, and Jerel McNeal of Marquette make up the second-team. The third-team consists of Terrence Williams of Louisville, Toney Douglas of Florida State, Sam Young of Pittsburgh, Sherron Collins of Kansas, and Gerald Henderson of Duke.

Ryter's Block: It's hard to argue with the first-team. Griffin will be the No. 1 pick in next year's NBA Draft assuming he forgoes his eligibility and enters. I don't see him coming back next season. I think he proved himself in college, his brother is graduating, and it's almost a guarantee he goes No. 1. He's also matured this season. I think last year he was a ‘show boat' and this year he was more ‘professional.' Tyler Hansbrough may go out on top this year. The Tar Heels are two wins away from a championship. You hardly see a player of this caliber stay in college for four years and I tip my cap to him. Although he isn't projected as a great NBA talent, he will get drafted and deserves first-team honors again. DeJuan Blair manhandled his opponents in the paint (see Hasheem Thabeet). Although the Panthers didn't make it to Detroit, they had a successful season and Blair was the main reason for their success. He was nearly unstoppable underneath. Many people forget that Stephen Curry had to run the point for Davidson this season. I think the transition was done smoothly. I got to watch him in person this year at Madison Square Garden against West Virginia where he just took over that game. He impressed me. He's more then just a shooter, the kid can play. James Harden is a projected NBA lottery pick. He led the Sun Devils to the dance and then he failed to show up come tourney time. He may have dropped to second-team if the voters counted tourney play.

Naismith Award: 30 Finalists Announced

ATLANTA (Feb. 24, 2009) - No college program has ever won a Heisman Trophy and a Naismith Trophy in the same academic year, but Blake Griffin is looking to put Oklahoma in uncharted territory. The 6-10 sophomore hopes to follow fellow Sooner Sam Bradford in being named the top player in his respective sport, as Griffin headlines the 30 mid-season candidates for the 2009 Naismith Trophy presented by AT&T, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced today.

Among those joining Griffin are Stephen Curry (Davidson), 2008 winner Tyler Hansbrough (North Carolina), Luke Harangody (Notre Dame), Jodie Meeks (Kentucky) and Jeff Teague (Wake Forest). Overall, the ACC has nine players on the list, followed by the Big East with eight. Six schools are represented by two players apiece: Connecticut, Duke, Louisville, North Carolina, Pittsburgh and Wake Forest.

The top 30 men's list was voted on by the Atlanta Tipoff Club's Board of Selectors, comprised of leading basketball journalists, coaches and administrators from around the country. The board based its criteria on player performances this season. The vote was tabulated and certified by the accounting firm of Habif, Arogeti & Wynne, LLP. HA&W is the largest independent accounting firm in Georgia and one of the top 50 firms in the United States. The Naismith Trophy presented by AT&T is the most prestigious national basketball award and is given annually to the men's college basketball player of the year. This year, the award will be presented at the NCAA Men's Final Four in Detroit.

Wooden Award: Midseason Top 30

Midway through the 2009 college basketball season, the top 30 candidates for the John R. Wooden Award, the nation's most coveted college basketball honor, were named today by The Los Angeles Athletic Club's John R. Wooden Award Committee. Composed of the players who will compete for this season's player of the year award, the midseason list is based on individual player performance and team records during the first half of the season.

"We have nine players on the midseason list who were not on our preseason watch list," said Wooden Award Chairman Richard "Duke" Llewellyn. "That is indicative of the breadth of talent across the country. We look forward to following all of these players as we finish up the conference season and head into the NCAA Tournament."

Heading the list are returning Wooden Award winner Tyler Hansbrough of North Carolina and Wooden All Americans Stephen Curry of Davidson and Notre Dame's Luke Harangody. Curry leads the nation in scoring at 28.9 ppg and adds 6.5 apg for 19-3 Davidson. Hansbrough, UNC's 6-9 senior, posts averages of 22.4 points and 7.6 rebounds, while shooring 52.9% from the field and 84.6% from the free throw line. Harangody is the nation's No. 4 scorer (25.3 ppg) and No. 3 rebounder (13.2 rpg).

Nine players have been selected to the midseason Top 30 who were not on the preseason list. This impressive group includes the only freshman on the list, Georgetown's 6-11 center Greg Monroe, and eight returning players: Adrien, Manny Harris (Michigan), Jordan Hill (Arizona), Matt Howard (Butler), Kalin Lucas (Michigan State), Matthews, Jodie Meeks (Kentucky), and Jeff Teague (Wake Forest).

Players who do not make the Midseason list are still eligible for the national ballot, which will be selected in March and will consist of approximately 20 players, chosen by the Wooden Award National Advisory Board Committee, who have proven to their universities that they are also making progress toward graduation and maintaining a cumulative 2.0 GPA.

About the John R. Wooden Award
Created in 1976, the John R. Wooden Award is the most prestigious individual honor in college basketball. It is bestowed upon the nation's best player at an institution of higher education who has proven to his or her university that he or she is making progress toward graduation and maintaining a cumulative 2.0 GPA. Previous winners include Larry Bird ('79), Michael Jordan ('84), and Tim Duncan ('97) and last year's recipients, Tyler Hansbrough of North Carolina and Candace Parker of Tennessee.

2009 Wooden Award

Back in October, CollegeHoops.net announced its Preseason All-Americans. Now that conference play has begun in earnest, here's our updated Mid-Season All-Americans as voted on by staff contributors, with comparisons to our earlier picks.

CollegeHoops.net Mid-Season Player of the Year: Blake Griffin (Oklahoma).

Commentary: Griffin received 9 of 12 Player of the Year votes. He replaces our original preseason pick Tyler Hansbrough.

Commentary: Harden moves up from the initial Second Team and replaces Darren Collison. Collison, still having a solid year, lost votes due to his team's less than dominant start. Griffin was the only player to receive First Team votes from all 12 voters.

Commentary: Lawson is the only player here who was originally on the 2nd team. Young moves up from our preseason third team, while Meeks wasn't even an honorable mention pick back in October. Patrick Patterson (UK), AJ Price (UCONN), and Tyler Smith (Tenn) fell out of the list. Patterson was hurt by the emergence of Meeks. Jeff Teague had the highest amount of votes amongst Second Teamers.
