Review: The Macrophenomenal Pro Basketball Almanac

FreeDarko presents ...
The Macrophenomenal Pro Basketball Almanac
Styles, Stats and Stars in Today's Game

Bloomsbury USA
$23.00

Inspiring would not be one of the first words that would come to mind when describing Darko Milicic's NBA career. Despite still being only 23-years-old, and proving to be a fairly capable bench player, calling his NBA career a bust would be a fair statement. However, Darko's plight is not in vain, as he has inspired the brilliant basketball blog, www.freedarko.com which first hit cyberspace in 2005. The FreeDarko High Council have recently released their first book, the aptly titled "The Macrophenomenal Pro Basketball Almanac.

For all intents and purposes, the FreeDarko boys are weirdoes (in the most endearing sense of the word). Not weirdoes like that guy on the subway that won't stop staring at you, more like quirky, non-threatening weird. All writing under aliases (pretty sure Dr. Lawyer IndianChief isn't what it says on his birth certificate), the FreeDarko collective look at the NBA from a far different perspective than the rest of us mere mortals. Wins and losses aren't as important to FreeDarko as a player's quirks, style and impact on the way the game is played. The quirkier (or European) the player the better. The book will totally change how you look at the game, as it breaks down some of the NBA's stars in terms you've never thought about before. The most stunning thing about the book is the artwork, as the illustrations in it are truly a work of art. They also back up their statements with odd stats, like comparing Chris Paul's rebounding average in 2007/08 to Yonkers' safety record and his scoring average to the GDP of Switzerland.

Fittingly, the forward of the book is written by the NBA's resident weirdo (once again, an endearing term), Gilbert Arenas. Marcophenomenal... will make you laugh, make you think and make you more interested in the NBA than you were before. Now if we could only get FreeDarko to be more interested in the NCAA.
