Is Butler a tourney lock? Lunardi says no; how 'bout you?

January 5th, 2009

ESPN's Bracketologist Joe Lunardi recently released his tournament projections. If the season ended today, Lunardi projects Butler as a #8 seed. However, in Lunardi's notes, he says of the Dawgs, "Butler (No. 2), Miami of Ohio (No. 12), Temple (No. 23) and Evansville (No. 24) are making unexpected appearances in the InsideRPI Top 25. As proof of the volatility of too-early RPI data, none is an NCAA tournament "lock" at this point. Butler is close, obviously, but two or three bad losses in a solid Horizon League could change the picture rapidly."

Other notes:

-CHN Bracketologist Shawn Siegal has Butler as a #4 seed in his latest projections. See it here: http://www.collegehoopsnet.com/bracketology-week-six-163936

-Butler jumped multiple spots in both the AP and Coaches polls to #21 and #20, respectively.

-Butler, Xavier, and Gonzaga are the only teams from non-BCS conferences ranked in either poll.

-Lunardi projects a second team from the HL to make the tourney as an automatic bid. He has the surprise of the League thus far, UWM, as a #14 seed.
