Is Cousins The Next Shaq?
- DeMarcus Cousins was awarded the SEC Player of the Week for the fourth time this season following his monstrous performance Saturday against Arkansas, which saw the Cats destroy the Razorbacks 101-70. Big Cuz posted his 10th double-double of the season (one shy of Chris Mills' freshman record) with 16 points and 14 boards in just 17 minutes of play.
This included two incredible drop-step maneuvers by DeMarcus- one ending with a one handed flush and the other with Cousins splitting a double team and getting to the rim like an NBA point guard - resulting in a conversation between my friends and I over whether or not Cousins could possibly be the next Shaq......you can call me crazy in the comments section, but I think he has the potential to at least be "Shaq-esque."
Cousins may not be quite as big as the man who played Neon in Blue Chips, but he is still a big boy at 6-11, 260 (Shaq listed at 7-1, 325). And remember, he's only 18 years old.
But what reminds me so much of Shaq when I watch Cousins play, is not only the goofy personality but also the amazing footwork he possesses for a young man his size. That was what was so amazing about Shaq, that despite how huge and imposing he was, he didn't lumber around the court like most big men do. He was, and still to some degree is, pretty light on his feet and able to make lightning-quick spin moves that mortal men of his stature should never be able to do.... a-la' DeMarcus Cousins vs. Arkansas.
