Pitt Gets Road Win at Cincinnati

I love watching Big East conference games. They are always very competitive and most of the time feature lots of great basketball talent. Anyone who follows college basketball at all knows that Pitt gave Syracuse its first loss of the season in Orange country over the weekend. It was a shock to most, but not to Jamie Dixon or his players. Jay Bilas said it best on the broadcast tonight, “Pitt isn’t a team, they are a program.“ Meaning they lost 3 great players from last years team but just reload and continue to get great results.

Cincinnati played a good game but just didn’t make good decisions and value every possession in the second half. I was very impressed with Cincinnati freshman phenom Lance Stephenson as he led the Bearcats with 13 points in the first half. However, he forced the issue on too many possessions in the second half and Cincy didn’t get quality shots. He finished with 15 points after a rough second half. I think Yancy Gates played tough but didn’t get enough touches in the second half which goes along with the poor decision making. Overall, Cincinnati is a talented team that will continue to improve as the season goes on. Their tournament life will most likely come down to a strong showing in the Big East Tournament.

Pittsburgh played a very physical “Pitt” style game. If you don’t know what I mean by “Pitt” style then you need to watch them play. You will rarely see a Pitt team get pushed around or out hustled. They play good hard nosed defense and share the ball very well on offense. Great combination for winning games right? Great defense and unselfish offense. I don’t know if they have the talent to win the Big East regular season, but don’t count them out of any game. In my opinion they will be a NCAA tournament team and a tough out.
