Washington St Basketball Preview: #141
Washington State Cougars
Overall Rank: #141
Conference Rank: #9 Pacific 10
2008-09: 17-16, 8-10
2008-09 postseason: NIT
Coach: Ken Bone (First year at Washington State, 335-167 overall)
Coach Tony Bennett continued the success started by his father at Washington State, but now he has parlayed that success into a job in the Atlantic Coast Conference. It was the Bennetts that turned the Cougars from a perennial cellar dweller in the Pac-10 into a NCAA Tournament team. The team’s recent success has made it possible for this group to continue to be successful even while they have to implement a new system.
Key Losses: C Aron Baynes, F Caleb Forrest, F Daven Harmeling, G Taylor Rochestie
Key Newcomers:
Coach Ken Bone has been very successful at Portland State and Seattle and should pick up right where Coach Bennett left off…with a slightly faster offense; and the recruiting class is a step in that direction. Reggie Moore and Xavier Thames will be the most important new players as the team tries to find a way to replace point guard Taylor Rochestie. Moore and Thames are both players who can get their teammates involved and do a little scoring on their own. Whichever one of them can adjust to life in the Pac-10 the quickest will likely get the starting nod at the beginning of the year. Anthony Brown will give the team another shooter and power forward Brock Motum is full of potential. Add James Watson, who redshirted last season, to the mix and Coach Bone has filled the holes that need to be filled.
Backcourt:
Without Rochestie, Klay Thompson is the star of this team. As a freshman, the 6-6 guard tallied 12.5 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. He is a great outside shooter who connected on over 41 percent of his attempts and hit over two per contest. With his size, he can simply shoot over most opposing defenders. Once he gets a little more aggressive getting to the basket, Thompson will be a superstar in the Pac-10. Marcus Capers is his likely partner on the wing. Capers will not score anywhere near as much as Thompson, but he earned nine starts as a freshman and can handle the ball and even hit the glass relatively effectively. With players like Mike Harthun returning, the backcourt should be in great shape if one of the newcomers can run the point.
Frontcourt:
It is in the frontcourt where there are some major losses. Nikola Koprivica has the ability to defend the four spot, but he would ideally spend most of his time on the wing. Coach Bone would not mind having a player who can handle the ball and shoot the outside shot at the four spot, but the Cougars will suffer on the glass because of it. The only true post player with any amount of experience is DeAngelo Casto. The 6-8 forward had a decent freshman campaign, averaging 4.4 points and 4.0 rebounds while earning two starts. The frontcourt will now be his and he has to develop into a more consistent scorer.
Who to Watch:
Capers, Castom and Thompson were all freshmen last year who played a big role on this team. Those are the players that need to be watched. If they can continue the success of their freshmen campaigns and turn into consistent sophomores, Washington State will be in good hands. Even fellow sophomores like Harthun and Charlie Enquist could play a bigger role this year.
Final Projection:
That means this is a young team with a new coach. There is certainly some rebuilding to be done, but the pieces are there for this year to be relatively successful. The Cougars might not make the NIT again, or any other postseason tournament for that matter, but they have a great new coach and a young nucleus of players to build around and will be looking at the NCAA Tournament in the next year or two.
Projected Post-season Tournament: none
Projected Starting Five:
Reggie Moore, Freshman, Guard, DNP last season
Klay Thompson, Sophomore, Guard, 12.5 points per game
Marcus Capers, Sophomore, Guard, 1.7 points per game
Nikola Koprivica, Senior, Guard, 3.1 points per game
DeAngelo Casto, Sophomore, Forward, 4.4 points per game

WSU
The anti-WSU bias is at it again! I'm actually slightly disappointed that only one person has replied so far, I'd expect there to be at least a dozen angry cougar fans ranting about how great their program is. Let's hear it from the people of Pullman!

we don't rant about how
we don't rant about how great our program is, we just have level heads. this team you have ranked to be second from last in the conference is the only one with two all-p10 freshmen. the runner up for p10 freshmen of the year. both also are representing wsu in the u19 tournament, which means they were recognized on a national level as well as within the conference as two of the best soph prospects in the country. what other teams have a nucleus of starters returning as promising as that? not the ones at the bottom of the pac, thats for sure.
not to mention, incoming freshmen brock motum is absolutely tearing it up on the australian team. the immediate impact he'll have is incredibly understated in this article.
theres a lot of unknowns, but when youre putting someone second from last in their conference, youre not just saying theres some unknowns, youre saying theres some problems. either that or we took a delorean back two years, because the pac is not stocked this year. USC. Theres a program with problems. Stanford is a program that needs to find an identity. asu is a team with unknowns without harden and pendergraph. oregon is a complete crapshoot. they return plenty of potential, but what did that potential get them last year? not even flashes of success.
could wsu end up 9th? absolutely. is it likely based on the outlook? not really. when youre making predictions for teams you dont care about, you dont just automatically put them in the lowest spot available. they are not going to roll over in the pac so easily this year either

Pretty poor analysis. I'm
Pretty poor analysis. I'm guessing very little research went into this. 15 minutes of Google'ing?

As a Cal fan, I find this
As a Cal fan, I find this rating for WSU a complete joke. Thompson and Casto tough matchups for the conference. Motum sounds like a perfect addition to the frontcourt and should get the bulk of the minutes there.
WSU will finish ahead of ASU, Stanford, USC, and possibly Oregon.

While Casto and Thompson
While Casto and Thompson returning give the cougars some hope, the truth is Bone is untested at the Div 1 level and it will take some time for him to get his running at an effective level. TThompson will be gone after this year and Casto will be struggling to remain aligible for the majority of the season. A projected 9th place finish is actually generous.

No
Where are you getting this information from? Theres no evidence so far that Klay is ready for the NBA. Even with a nice breakout season, theres a strong chance he'd stay at least until his junior year, especially when it's the year all the young talent will gel and give the cougs a chance at a strong run to the tourney.
And why won't Casto be eligible exactly? What a joke.

I tend to agree with the
I tend to agree with the first posting above. Thompson would likely chose to enter the NBA rather than stay in Pullman for a third season, especially if he has a solid year. Casto will need an absolute butt load of tutoring and luck to remain elibible, and he may or may not have it in him.

really thats interesting?
because i could swear that if wsu had talent that was a sure thing for the nba this year, they might be projected better than 9th....

You misunderstand
I didnt imply that Thompson was a sure-fire NBA talent, (although I think he will make it in the league)...I was implying that entering the NBA draft was certainly a more likely, and definately preferable, choice than remaining in Pullman, Washington for another year. You would hhave to agree "anonymous". I've made the trip up there on several occasions during the past decade (all during BB season) and have to say that almost anything would be preferable to Pullman.

Pullman isn't exactly the
Pullman isn't exactly the best place during the winter but it seems as though most everyone who has attended the school has enjoyed their experience down there. To say that he wants to ditch town immediately seems like a pretty bad assumption, especially considering he was given an easy out this last year after Bennett left. At that point, he considered it but his dad provided proper guidance in suggesting that he doesn't become irrational and wait to see who the successor is. His dad's influence on his decision making makes me believe that dashing for the draft will not happen after soph year. It seems that Klay will go pro at some point, but I doubt his dad will let him prematurely enter the draft when his game is not anywhere close to a finished product. Also, considering this team returns and brings in a huge amount of talent and this year will more than likely be a work in process, it seems that it might be a little far fetched to leave after this year. He is still working on developing his overall game (i.e., ability to get to the hoop especially) so he is not exactly a high draft prospect at this point. And with all of the talent coming into the program, his junior year could and probably will be a NCAA tourney team with potential to reach the Sweet 16.

Bone is untested at the Div
Bone is untested at the Div 1 level??? You are as uninformed as the guy that wrote the article. Bone's last team, Portland State, has been Division 1 since 1996.
Bone's last two Portland State teams went to the NCAA tourney. Last year his PSU team beat #7 Gonzaga at Gonzaga (only two teams have managed to do this since they opened their new arena several years ago) and lost at Pac-10 champion Washington by one point. In the last two years his teams played Kansas, UCLA, Washington, Washington State, Baylor, Xavier, etc. His PSU teams beat Arizona State and Oregon on the road.
Untested?....give me a break.

9th place in the PX?....no
9th place in the PX?....no way. The cougs will finish in at least 8th, possibly 7th...so there!

Cougs=Last
No chance the cougs even beat the ducks this year and I will be surprised if Casto's legal problems end with his recent hit-and-run.

He slightly bumped a car,
He slightly bumped a car, left a little 2 inch scratch, and already got a misdemeanor, which is no jail time and off the record in usually 3 months.
no team will do anything for such a minor issue.

Cougs 9th?
No chance for the cougs to finish any higher than last. Bennett escaped just in time.

Idiot, you and people like
Idiot, you and people like you are obviously fans of another Pac-10 team and are just praying WSU is as bad as this review is saying, yet deep down you know they are probably finishing 5th or higher.

Starting Lineup??
Xavier Thames will start at the 1. He's a much better prospect than Brown. I don't know if Kopravica starts either. I doubt Bone is going to start him just because he's a senior. He's probably the worst player on the roster. Casto and Motum should start at the 4 and 5.

starting lineup
Reggie Moore will start at the point and will be the most important player on this NCAA tournament team.

I like a 4th or 5th place
I like a 4th or 5th place finish this year. However i wouldnt be suprised if We finished lower however. The pac-10 has so many dark spots its impossible to predict anything other than Cal and UW finishing 1 and 2

Uhhh
I guess you missed the memo where WSU is the only team with three representatives in the U19 tournament. Both teams (Australia and USA) happen to be undefeated into the quarterfinals currently.
Who do you predict is better in the pac since you have them 9th? Stanford and USC are both in much worse shape. Oregon has potential but hasn't proven anything in recent years.
Don't get me wrong, I don't see WSU as a lock for any tournament, but to say they aren't even a competitor in arguably an even weaker Pac10 is ridiculous. And to rank them in a position complimentary to an underwhelming midmajor team is asinine.
As usual, you show no comprehension of WSU or the Pac10 in general.
